A Theory Of Economic Justice, Marshall Paul Forrester Jan 2025

A Theory Of Economic Justice, Marshall Paul Forrester

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

This dissertation develops a theory of economic justice. It begins with an economic state of nature, much like Hobbes's political state of nature. In the economic state of nature, there is no economic cooperation through the division of labor and specialization, and everyone is very poor. The purpose of the dissertation is to identify the conditions for just economic cooperation. I argue that each participant in economic cooperation should be rewarded according to their contributions. The first chapter draws on Henry George to argue that there is a fundamental difference between land and the other two factors of production, labor …

Disruption Of Functional Network Development In Children With Prenatal Zika Virus Exposure Revealed By Resting-State Eeg, Ahmet Omurtag, Samah Abdulbaki, Thomas Thesen, Randall Waechter, Barbara Landon, Roberta Evans, Dennis Dlugos, Geetha Chari, A. Desiree Labeaud, Karen Blackmon

Brain and Mind Institute

Children born to mothers infected by Zika virus (ZIKV) during pregnancy are at increased risk of adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes including microcephaly, epilepsy, and neurocognitive deficits, collectively known as Congenital Zika Virus Syndrome. To study the impact of ZIKV on infant brain development, we collected resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) recordings from 28 normocephalic ZIKV-exposed children and 16 socio-demographically similar but unexposed children at 23–27 months of age. We assessed group differences in frequency band power and brain synchrony, as well as the relationship between these metrics and age. A significant difference (p < 0.05, Bonferroni corrected) in Inter-Site Phase Coherence was observed: median Pearson correlation coefficients were 0.15 in unexposed children and 0.07 in ZIKV-exposed children. Results showed that functional brain networks in the unexposed group were developing rapidly, in part by strengthening distal high-frequency and weakening proximal lower frequency connectivity, presumably reflecting normal synaptic growth, myelination and pruning. These maturation patterns were attenuated in the ZIKV-exposed group, suggesting that ZIKV exposure may contribute to neurodevelopmental vulnerabilities that can be detected and quantified by resting-state EEG.

Management of bleeding in persons with hemophilia and inhibitors involves treatment with bypassing agents, including recombinant activated factor VII (rFVIIa). Two rFVIIa products are commercially approved for use in the United States and the European Union. Eptacog alfa and eptacog beta share the same amino acid sequence but differ in posttranslational modifications. Although rFVIIa has been used to manage bleeding in persons with hemophilia and inhibitors for over 30 years, its mechanisms of action is still being studied. In vitro and in vivo studies have suggested that rFVIIa could promote hemostasis by (1) increasing tissue factor-dependent activation of factor (F)X …

Theory And Practice In John Wesley’S Critique Of Calvinism: A Philosophical Examination, Walter Stepanenko Jan 2025

Theory And Practice In John Wesley’S Critique Of Calvinism: A Philosophical Examination, Walter Stepanenko

The Asbury Journal

On more than one occasion, John Wesley found himself engaged in debate with Calvinists in the Methodist revival. This paper philosophically re-examines John Wesley’s concerns with the Calvinism of some members of his evangelical cohort. It is argued that Wesley’s concerns fall into two types: theoretical concerns about the conceptual coherency of a view that makes God the author of sin, and practical concerns about the moral implications of a view that suggests some individuals are elect and others are reprobate. This article then attempts a principled reconstruction of these objections. It is argued that while there is a rational …

Knowing What To Eat And When To Eat: Reading The Food Offering Text (1 Corinthians 8:1–11:1) From A Myanmar Christian Perspective (Burmese Version), Hram Hu Lian Jan 2025

Knowing What To Eat And When To Eat: Reading The Food Offering Text (1 Corinthians 8:1–11:1) From A Myanmar Christian Perspective (Burmese Version), Hram Hu Lian

The Asbury Journal

Food offerings play a vital role in the socio-religious life of the people of Myanmar. This is mainly because food is served as a part of worship in religious settings (Nat worship, Ahlu pwe, and religious festivals), as well as a part of regular interactions in a social setting (workrelated dinner parties, dinner parties at a Buddhist neighbor’s house, and non-religious social gatherings). In this context, knowing what to eat, and when to eat, becomes crucially important for Myanmar Christians as often times a person encounters various questions in regard to food offerings such as; Should a Christian participate in …

Freemasonry And The Methodist Episcopal Church In The Nineteenth Century, Nicholas M. Railton Jan 2025

Freemasonry And The Methodist Episcopal Church In The Nineteenth Century, Nicholas M. Railton

The Asbury Journal

Virtually nothing has been written on the presence and impact of Freemasonry within the Methodist Episcopal Church. This article begins to fill this lacuna by shedding some light on the topic. It has been claimed that John Wesley was himself a Freemason. In his journal he briefly discusses a book by an ex-Mason.

In this article some of the similarities and differences between the two systems are highlighted. The Morgan Affair temporarily weakened the position of Freemasonry in the Methodist Episcopal Church and in broader American society. Twelve short biographies of Methodists who joined the lodge show that the influence …

Horizontal Infiltration Of Water Through Porous Snow As A Gravity Current, Anthony Cheng Jan 2025

Horizontal Infiltration Of Water Through Porous Snow As A Gravity Current, Anthony Cheng

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

On the surface of the Greenland ice sheet or around the margins of the Antarctic ice shelf, water infiltrates porous ice. It is important to understand this infiltration process since water populating the pore space of ice directly impacts the density, porosity, and wetness of ice. These properties influence the mechanics and tensile strength of ice, as greater amounts of infiltration result in faster or more widespread deformation events, which may lead to adverse climatic effects such as sea level rise and ocean current disruption. While studies have considered the thermodynamics and fluid mechanics of water vertically percolating through snow …

The Implementation And Miniaturization Of A New Current Source Into The Consolidated Layout Of An Electrical Impedance Tomography Probe With A Novel Approach To Electrode Layout, Katherine M. Bullion

Dartmouth College Master’s Theses

Prostate cancer is the most highly diagnosed form of cancer in male subjects in the United States. As a result, over 100,000 radical prostatectomies are performed annually in the US [1]. However, it is currently very difficult for surgeons to confirm that all impacted tissues have been effectively removed from the patient. Positive surgical margins are an independent risk factor for the recurrence of cancer, yet currently there is no method to efficiently, intraoperatively assess the status of surgical margins during a radical prostatectomy. There is a need for a new tool that is small enough to fit into a …

Stable Numerical Solution Of An Elliptic Pde Inverse Problem Subject To Incomplete Boundary Conditions, Qasim Abd Ali Tayyeh

Knowledge Engineering and Data Science

This study addresses the challenging problem of solving inverse elliptic Partial Differential Equations (PDE) with incomplete boundary data, data available only on a part of the domain boundary. The aim is to develop a robust, effective numerical framework that consistently recovers parameters and/or sources from incomplete, ill-posed data. In the case of a variational problem discretized by the Finite Element Method (FEM) and solved by an adjoint-based optimization strategy, the framework uses Tikhonov regularization. Morozov's Discrepancy Principle is used to determine regularization parameters that achieve the best balance between accuracy and stability. Even with 5% noise in the measurement data, …
