The Legacy Of Highway Displacement In Binghamton: The Construction Of The North Shore Drive In The Seventh Ward, Alice Liu Jan 2025

The Legacy Of Highway Displacement In Binghamton: The Construction Of The North Shore Drive In The Seventh Ward, Alice Liu

Research Days Posters 2025

The 1950s and early 1960s were a peak time for highway construction both in Binghamton and around the country. Many scholars have noted that highway construction in many cities resulted in demolished communities leaving their poor and minority residents displaced. The impact of highway construction in Binghamton, however, has received little attention. This paper focuses on the displacement of residents, mostly Black and Italian Americans, as a result of the construction of the North Shore Drive through Binghamton’s Seventh Ward. It draws on local Binghamton newspaper articles and census records of individuals who lived in the former Seventh Ward. This …

From Peril To Perseverance: Dr. Arthur C. Parker And The Seneca Arts Project, Brennan Ciccolone

Research Days Posters 2025

Like many Native people, the Haudenosaunee were subjected to culturcide and assimilation using residential schools like the Thomas Indian School in the late 19th and early 20th century. In 1925, the Seneca archaeologist Dr. Arthur C. Parker was hired as the director of the Rochester Museum and Science Center. Parker used his museum position to uplift and preserve Haudenosaunee arts and culture. This paper focuses on his Seneca Arts Project (1935-1941), which gathered art and artifacts from both ancient and contemporary Haudenosaunee members. This project explores how Parker’s work was used to help revitalize and honor Native American identity in …

Black Aids Activists In New York And Their Battle Against Stigma In The 1980s And 1990s, Elijah Poole-Davis

Research Days Posters 2025

The HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 1980s and 90s disproportionately affected the African American community, intensifying racialized stigma and amplifying racial divides. This project explores how Black AIDS activists centered in the New York area challenged these stigmas and transformed public attitudes towards HIV/AIDS. Central to these efforts were partnerships with Black churches and community organizations to promote acceptance and empathy. Drawing on oral histories, artwork from the Gran Fury collective, and documents from church-based outreach programs, this project analyzes how Black activists such as Kendall Thomas and Ron Medley uniquely redefined the narrative around HIV/AIDS, not only as a medical …

The Effects Of Legislation And Denial On Climate Action, June Kaye Jan 2025

The Effects Of Legislation And Denial On Climate Action, June Kaye

Research Days Posters 2025

Research worth being explored is the effects of climate activism and denial of the American public on climate policies carried out by American politicians. Answers will be discovered as to why green parties have failed to gain political power, and how and why, psychologically and economically, politicians and fossil fuel executives choose to disregard the voices of American climate protesting. Resulting from this, inaction follows, leading to an output of groups’ unwillingness to change their actions and views based on fixed political stances. Sustainability hasn’t been a mainstream concern for Americans and many are not sufficiently educated on environmental matters. …

There is a positive correlation between eating a tyrosine-rich diet and exercising with motivation.

Voices From The Frontlines: Resistance, Policy, And The Path To Climate Equity, Ethan Cohen Jan 2025

Voices From The Frontlines: Resistance, Policy, And The Path To Climate Equity, Ethan Cohen

Research Days Posters 2025

Climate change policies and solutions frequently disregard the frontline communities most affected by environmental damage, particularly those resisting extractive industries such as fossil fuel industries and large-scale energy projects. This research explores how this resistance shapes more than just policy, focusing on the ways communities challenge harmful practices and search for solutions that prioritize equity. Through case studies, such as the Wayúu people in La Guajira, Colombia fighting against a new form of extractivism, the connection between activism and policymaking is evident. The findings reveal that without a community based system, climate policies risk reinforcing existing inequalities rather than addressing …

Research Days Posters 2025

Religion and spirituality are important to many individuals, though the lack of agreement across definitions and measures make them somewhat complicated constructs to examine. This study analyzes several existing faith-based inventories. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses revealed four major factors. Ultimately, our results suggest that there is a need for additional validation work on measures in this field to ensure more accurate measurement and to allow for better comparison of findings across studies.

Green Infrastructure Programs In New York Vs Shanghai, Sebastian Male-Diaz

Research Days Posters 2025

Why is the current US administration is doing less to combat climate change? Climate change is an issue that is the biggest threat to humanity in the 21st century. Since the early 21st century, China’s rise in power has increased astronomically. It has gotten to the point where soon it will surpass the United States economically. As of now, the United States is the largest economy in the world, with China coming in close second. However, this will not be the case for long. The main question that this project addresses is to see if there is a difference between …

Imputation And K-Nn Based Haplotype Refinement Of Simulated Ancient Mitochondrial Genomes, Nathaniel Plummer, Yuan Fang, Michel Shamoon-Pour, Ari Cozzarelli, Suhail Ghafoor, Laure Spake, Matthew W. Emery

Research Days Posters 2025

Ancient DNA (aDNA) is fragmented and degraded due to post-mortem processes, leading to low coverage and incomplete sequences. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA), despite its high copy number, is similarly subject to degradation processes, requiring statistical imputation for whole mtDNA reconstruction. While nuclear genome imputation is well-established, ancient mtDNA imputation remains underexplored. Here, this study benchmarks two mtDNA imputation pipelines—MitoIMP, and a novel pipeline integrating Minimac4’s Hidden Markov Model (HMM) with a k-Nearest Neighbors (k-NN) algorithm. Using the largest mtDNA imputation panel to date (n = 46,000), reconstruction accuracy was tested on 100 simulated ancient mtDNAs (≥0.25X coverage) generated with Gargammel and …

Not Just Your Average Superhero: The Affordances Of Comics Journalism In Human Rights Reporting, Ryan Chen Jan 2025

Not Just Your Average Superhero: The Affordances Of Comics Journalism In Human Rights Reporting, Ryan Chen

Research Days Posters 2025

Though graphic memoirs have become globally popular, many readers are unaware of comics journalism, the combination of news reports and comics illustrations. While this format lacks the claim to objectivity of photojournalism, it allows journalists to explore developing issues and histories with imagery and creativity that other media lack. Comics journalists such as Joe Sacco, Sam Wallman, and Dan Archer use their panels to shine light on important human rights and labor abuses, while also making sure readers have a vivid view of victims’ stories. In these authors’ works, memory emerges as a key site for illustration to help represent …

Can Llms Understand Multi-Armed Bandit Tasks?, Isaac Cohen, Hiten Malhotra, William M. Hayes

Research Days Posters 2025

Large Language Models (LLMs) possess many emergent traits, including in-context learning capabilities that one can utilize for sequential decision-making tasks. This study examined how Llama 3 (8B parameters) performs in multi-armed bandit tasks using Bernoulli reward distributions. The LLM’s performance were compared to traditional reinforcement learning (RL) algorithms, including epsilon greedy and Upper Confidence Bound, to evaluate the model’s understanding of exploration and exploitation. Using a logistic regression classifier on PCA-reduced activation vectors extracted from the LLM’s decoder layers, over 90% accuracy was achieved in distinguishing prompts reflecting greedy versus anti-greedy decisions, highlighting the LLM’s internally consistent representations. However, efforts …

Increasing Social Determinants Of Health (Sdoh) Screening Rates Among Hospitalized Patients Through Increase Utilization Of The Sdoh Navigator And Nurse Education, J'Adore Larosa-Mattis

Research Days Posters 2025

Social determinants of health (SDoH) significantly impact health outcomes, often more than medical care alone (WHO, 2024). Patients with low socioeconomic status face higher post-discharge risks, increasing readmissions (Virapongse & Misky, 2018). Despite their importance, SDoH screening remains inconsistent. Integrating SDoH data into Electronic Health Records (EHRs) is essential for addressing disparities and guiding targeted interventions (Liu et al., 2024). This quality improvement (QI) project aimed to enhance nurse education and increase SDoH Navigator utilization within the hospital’s EHR system to improve SDoH screening rates. Five nurses in a 40-bed telemetry unit participated in an educational intervention, including interactive training …

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Quantitative modelling is a fundamental skill for biology students with performance determined by a host of cognitive and metacognitive resources and requiring instructors to integrate key quantitative dimensions into teaching biology. Using an assessment of quantitative modelling in biology, we explored biology students’ (n = 930 higher education students) modelling practices (i.e., abilities to create, test, revise), metacognition about the nature of models and confidence in their capabilities to model. Students performed best on items related to understanding variables used in models and performed more poorly on items related to interpreting, creating, and using models to understand biological phenomena. …

Arsenal Of Femininity: Women, Relationships, And Gender Roles During World War Ii, Jesse B. Yaeger

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Popular imagery of Rosie the Riveter has colored our collective consciousness to assume the women entering manufacturing jobs during World War Two permanently expanded the gender roles of women in American society. However, historians Leila J Rupp, Susan Hartmann, D’Ann Campbell, and Maureen Honey have shown that during the war, publicly espoused gender roles continued to restrict women to the point of “going back to the kitchen” once the war ended. Their research focuses on societal expectations of women but not how women responded to these questions in their personal lives. Reading correspondences between men and women after the attack …

“One, Two, Three, Four, We Don’T Want Your Fucking War”: The Student Protest Movements At Columbia University And Kent State University During The War In Vietnam, Eric Kappaz

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The comparative study of student protests at drastically different universities and the success ofthose protests is significantly lacking from the historical record. The Vietnam era was a pivotal turning point in American university life, during which students across the country pushed for changes not only to the institutions of higher learning but also to the country as a whole. This historical comparative analysis utilizes significant primary source documentation to analyze how students and universities at the time dealt with the changes that were occurring in the university structure and the intrusion on university operations by outside actors, specifically the federal …

The Impact Of Facility Dogs On College Students' Stress Management And Emotional Regulation, Anna Reichert

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

College is a demanding transitional time where students experience new friendships and personal growth. During this time, mental health issues can surface, which impact emotional well-being. Studies have shown that dogs reduce stress, anxiety and depression, encourage exercise, lower blood pressure, and raise oxytocin and dopamine levels (American Heart Association, 2021). Eastern Michigan University introduced their own facility dog, Tinker, a two-year-old golden retriever. Since Fall 2024, she has provided emotional comfort and relief to students and the campus community. Students were surveyed on stress levels and if and how Tinker made an impact. Survey results show Tinker’s effect on …
