Telling Their Story: A Proposed Social Group For Autistic Teenagers, Bailey Hull Jan 2025

Telling Their Story: A Proposed Social Group For Autistic Teenagers, Bailey Hull

Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects

Typically developing adolescents go through many transitions and learning experiences from ages 13 to 18. Autistic adolescents also develop through these transitions and learning experiences. This unique group of adolescents can have a much more difficult time with these involvements, however, due to societal standards, learning, and growing within a neurodivergent mindset. As social isolation, bullying, and a lack of friendship opportunities continue to persist within the neurodivergent adolescent community, the lack of appropriate, affirming interventions must be addressed. This doctoral specialization project aims to provide licensed and student-level clinicians with a treatment manual to guide them through a social …

Acceptance And Commitment Therapy (Act) For Appalachains: Cultural Additions To Act, Jessica E. King

Psychology Doctoral Specialization Projects

This project examined the potential application of cultural additions to various aspects of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). This project is specifically focused on cultural adaptations of ACT for the Appalachian population. The ACT adaptations were devised based on a review of research on Appalachian culture, including the region’s geography, history of exploitation, cultural values, and clinical considerations for working with Appalachian populations. An overview of ACT and treatment effectiveness of ACT is included. It is important to note that this project is intended to be a supplement to ACT, and should be used in tandem with an ACT workbook …

Distributional Considerations In Climate Economics, Simon Fridtjof Lang Jan 2025

Distributional Considerations In Climate Economics, Simon Fridtjof Lang

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Climate change and climate policies have distributional consequences on a global scale. Climate impacts are unevenly distributed, responsibilities for emissions vary across countries, and capabilities to mitigate and adapt differ. These distributional aspects are at the heart of international climate policy discussions. In response, international climate finance—financial transfers from developed to developing countries for climate mitigation, adaptation, and damage compensation—has become a central topic in international climate negotiations. The three chapters of this dissertation explore distributional considerations in climate economics from different perspectives and assess how optimal climate policy may depend on these considerations.

The first paper examines how the …

Kentucky Comfort Care: Understanding And Awareness Of Palliative And Hospice Care In Kentucky Adults, Riley E. Hicks Jan 2025

Kentucky Comfort Care: Understanding And Awareness Of Palliative And Hospice Care In Kentucky Adults, Riley E. Hicks

Honors Theses

Kentucky has an overwhelming need for both palliative and hospice care services because of the high percentage of individuals who struggle with chronic or life-threatening conditions. Studies have shown that access to palliative and hospice care may be inhibited by the knowledge patients have of these services. The purpose of this study was to examine the awareness and understanding Kentuckians have of palliative and hospice care and to determine the factors influencing them. A 22-question survey was administered to collect information about Kentuckians understanding of available palliative and hospice care services and common vocabulary used by providers in these settings. …

Deep Learning Methods For Protein - Small Molecule Interactions With Applications To Early-Stage Drug Discovery, Gregory William Kyro Jan 2025

Deep Learning Methods For Protein - Small Molecule Interactions With Applications To Early-Stage Drug Discovery, Gregory William Kyro

Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations

Drug discovery is a challenging endeavor for multiple reasons including the complexity of protein-ligand interactions at the molecular-level, the vastness of chemical space, and safety constraints related to unintended biological effects. In this dissertation, I present a suite of novel deep learning approaches that address these challenges from multiple angles. I first introduce HAC-Net— a deep learning model that, at the time, was the state of the art for predicting protein-ligand binding affinity—which was used to identify a potential inhibitor of a G protein-coupled receptor whose overexpression leads to cancer, diabetes, and multiple sclerosis, as well as a potential antivirulence …

Reencountering Trade Legacies, Indigenous Histories, And The Early Leopoldine Society Circle In The Vienna Weltmuseum, Michael Burri Jan 2025

Reencountering Trade Legacies, Indigenous Histories, And The Early Leopoldine Society Circle In The Vienna Weltmuseum, Michael Burri

German Studies Faculty Works

This chapter concerns the Great Lakes Indigenous peoples whose artifacts may be found in the Vienna Weltmuseum. It situates these artifacts within the larger framework of exchange modalities among Indigenous peoples, together with the Leopoldine Society, an organization founded in Vienna in 1829 to minister to German-speaking Catholics in North America. To convey this framework, the chapter recalls Indigenous artifact collections of British officers active in the region, as well as the gift giving of Odawa leader Jean-Baptiste Assiginack. It also devotes close attention to Georg Schwarz, whose inventory of Indigenous artifacts remains the centerpiece of the North American collection …

Habsburg Encounters With Native America: Familiar Strangers, J. Singerton, M. Křížová, Michael Burri Jan 2025

Habsburg Encounters With Native America: Familiar Strangers, J. Singerton, M. Křížová, Michael Burri

German Studies Faculty Works

The central European lands of the Habsburg monarchy have long shared an intertwined past with the Indigenous inhabitants of the Americas. This volume focuses on the process of encountering these peoples as a continual action across several centuries that has produced numerous and varied instances of cultural dialogues, perspectives, and understandings. Moreover, this central European element is something that has not been considered in its own right before now and has been overshadowed by the focus on a wider Germanic fascination for Indigenous cultures. Breaking away from this wider narrative allows us not only to recover a more distinct historical …

Lyle S. Hallman Social Work Faculty Publications

A collaboration between a theatre company, a university and

eight community organizations culminated in an applied theatre

project entitled “Living Below the Line.” Residents living with

poverty were invited to become co-creators of a new play,

which was performed in five local venues. The project’s objectives

were 1) the provision of a respectful, supportive, empowering

and creative process for the co-creators, and 2) increased

understanding of the effects of poverty for audience members

and the larger community. This paper reports the findings of the

evaluation, which indicate that the objectives were met in several

ways: 1) the co-creators felt uplifted …

Flexibility And Resilience Are Essential Legal Skills, Margie Alsbrook

Articles

The legal profession is facing an era of change driven by technological advancements, environmental crises, shifting client expectations, and evolving societal norms. This article argues that flexibility and resilience are not just positive personality traits but essential legal skills that should be intentionally cultivated in law school curricula. By integrating adaptability into legal education—through emphasizing the evolving nature of law, incorporating interdisciplinary approaches, reshaping assessments, and fostering collaborative learning—law schools can better equip students to navigate an unpredictable future. Encouraging law students to embrace flexibility and resilience as a professional skill will not only enhance their long-term success but also …

Using Big Data To Dismantle Systemic Barriers: How Tracking Official Misconduct Can Foster Justice And Increase Accountability In The Criminal Legal System, Meagan R. Hurley Jan 2025

Using Big Data To Dismantle Systemic Barriers: How Tracking Official Misconduct Can Foster Justice And Increase Accountability In The Criminal Legal System, Meagan R. Hurley

Articles

The U.S. criminal legal system is a vast and complex machine, long subject to public and scholarly scrutiny. The U.S. incarcerates more people than any other nation, holding an astonishing 1.9 million individuals behind bars. Of them, approximately eighty percent are indigent, and over sixty percent are racial minorities, despite these groups comprising a relatively small portion of the overall population. In this expansive system, which disproportionately targets minorities and the poor, it is unsurprising that justice is not always served: Human error and bias are nearly guaranteed to occur at some juncture. Experts estimate that about four percent of …

Doge's Matrix Structure And Presidential Power, Jason Marisam Jan 2025

Doge's Matrix Structure And Presidential Power, Jason Marisam

Faculty Scholarship

At the start of his second term, President Trump created the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a novel White House entity tasked with reshaping the federal bureaucracy. Far more than a traditional advisory commission, DOGE employed a matrix structure that embedded staff across executive agencies, establishing dual reporting lines to both agency heads and the White House. This essay argues that DOGE’s organizational design represents a structural innovation in presidential control and an evolution of the longstanding “czar” model. Drawing on organizational and principal-agent theories, the essay explores how the matrix structure enhanced the President’s capacity to monitor agency behavior, …
