Shifting Students’ Perceptions About Homelessness: Quantitative Assessment Of A Project-Based Approach, Diana A. Chen, Mark A. Chapman, Joel Alejandro Mejia Jan 2025

Shifting Students’ Perceptions About Homelessness: Quantitative Assessment Of A Project-Based Approach, Diana A. Chen, Mark A. Chapman, Joel Alejandro Mejia

School of Engineering: Faculty Scholarship

Although engineering institutional bodies uphold public welfare and the impact of engineering on people and society, engineering curricula rarely scaffold students to connect their technical learning with sociotechnical perspectives. This paper describes a project-based learning approach where engineering students engaged with issues faced by people experiencing homelessness to better understand the sociotechnical nature of effective, user-centered, engineering design. We conducted a quantitative assessment to de- termine how well and in what ways the project-based learning curriculum shifted students’ perceptions about homelessness. We collected pre-/post-survey data from students on 21 statements about their perceptions and attitudes about homelessness prior to and …

Bio-Inspired Sutures: Localizing Damage By Isolating Strain Energy, Diana A. Chen, Melissa M. Gibbons Jan 2025

Bio-Inspired Sutures: Localizing Damage By Isolating Strain Energy, Diana A. Chen, Melissa M. Gibbons

School of Engineering: Faculty Scholarship

This study draws upon bio-inspiration from anatomical sutures found in hard structures, such as turtle shells, to explore if impact energy can be dissipated through geometric parameterization rather than relying on energy-absorbing materials. While previous finite element analysis studies identified optimal dovetail suture geometries for maximizing the global stiffness and toughness of archway structures, this paper explores how different suture geometries might optimize localization effects through segmentation to isolate damage caused by the propagation of strain energy. We compare the global toughness of each suture geometry to its scaling factor, defined as the ratio of strain energy in the center …

Youth purpose is a critical developmental asset linked to well-being, academic engagement, and vocational success. However, traditional assessments often fail to capture its complexity. This study introduces an innovative qualitative approach that combines semi-structured interviews with visual mapping to help adolescent participants articulate their journey toward purpose development. Thirty-eight diverse high school students participated in creating visual maps to illustrate their personal paths toward finding purpose. Results revealed three salient themes: (1) chronology, with the road map serving as a way to depict purpose development across time, (2) the common shapes of purpose paths, revealing insights into the developmental experience …

"Queens Of Ghost-Land" 134 Years Later: Un-Masking An Appalachian Witchcraft Accuser, Aíne Norris

English Faculty Publications

In 1891, newspapers across America printed a story about witches in the Appalachian Mountains and the alleged powers they possessed to control their small farming community. The article was scathing in accusation and ultimately contributed to continued othering of the women profiled, increasing their visible vulnerabilities of class, gender, and societal status. Despite an implied familiarity with the region, the article was published with initials for its byline, an act that simultaneously identified the author to locals as historian Eva Grant while offering her anonymized national protection as a subject expert. For over five years the accusations were re-printed in …

Tedvil: Leveraging Transformer-Based Embeddings For Vulnerability Detection In Lifted Code, Gary Mccully, John Hastings, Shengjie Xu Jan 2025

Tedvil: Leveraging Transformer-Based Embeddings For Vulnerability Detection In Lifted Code, Gary Mccully, John Hastings, Shengjie Xu

Research & Publications

Ransomware and other malware inflict devastating financial and operational damage on organizations worldwide by exploiting deeply embedded, hard-to-detect vulnerabilities in their systems. Detecting these vulnerabilities in compiled code before malicious actors exploit them remains a critical challenge in cybersecurity. This research introduces TEDVIL (Transformer-based Embeddings for Discovering Vulnerabilities in Lifted Code), a novel framework which uses transformer-based embeddings to train neural networks to detect vulnerabilities in lifted code. The framework was implemented using bidirectional (BERT and RoBERTa) and unidirectional (GPT-1 and GPT-2) transformer-based models to generate embeddings for training Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural networks to detect stack-based buffer overflows …

Experiential Learning Through Simulations In Fully Online Asynchronous Courses: Exploring The Role Of Self-Debriefing, David De Jong, Sara Dexter

Research & Publications

Online preparation of professionals is increasing in higher education, which in educational leadership prepa ration programs raises the need for a means to provide authentic simulations of leadership experiences and help aspirants learn from them. This study presents a content analysis of 826 responses from 59 different school leadership students who, following each of the 14 simulations they experienced, wrote one response in an asynchronous format as a form of self-debriefing. The five themes identified map to the four phases of the experiential learning cycle (Kolb, 1984), suggesting that virtual opportunities to practice leadership in tions may serve as grounding …

A Teacher Apprenticeship Pathway In A Rural, Midwest State: Perspectives Of Teacher Apprentices, Megan Schuh, Jennifer Nash, David Dejong, Ryan Young

Research & Publications

The national teacher shortage makes it challenging for principals and superintendents to hire certified teachers. To address this problem, a university in a rural state in the Midwest partnered with their state’s agencies to develop a teacher apprenticeship pathway (TAP) for 78 paraprofessionals working in the state’s public, non-public, and tribal schools. The TAP provides an organized pathway to earn a teaching degree. This study reveals the perceptions of the participants after completing their first semester. The results reveal that most experiences are positive, yet they desire more communication and help with time management. The results of this study can …

State of the Commonwealth Reports

This is Old Dominion University’s 11th annual State of the Commonwealth Report. While it represents the work of many people connected in various ways to the university, the report does not constitute an official viewpoint of Old Dominion, its president, Brian Hemphill, Ph.D., the Board of Visitors, the Strome College of Business or the generous donors who support the activities of the Dragas Center for Economic Analysis and Policy.

Our work seeks to contribute to the conversation about how Virginia can foster growth across the Commonwealth without glossing over the challenges we face. We want to encourage difficult conversations to …

Part 2: The State Of Virginia's Go Virginia Regions, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University

State of the Commonwealth Reports

In this chapter, we discuss the economic performance of the nine GO Virginia regions relative to the state and nation. We examine a number of measures of economic performance: population, employment, jobs, wages, personal income, and establishments. Each of these measures is available on a more frequent basis than Gross Domestic Product (GDP), providing a more current picture of the economic activity in each GO Virginia region. In aggregate, these data allow us to construct a clearer picture of the health of Virginia’s regional economies.

Part 4: Is It Better To Give Than Receive? Exploring The Distributional Dimension Of Virginia's Budget, Dragas Center For Economic Analysis And Policy, Old Dominion University

State of the Commonwealth Reports

This chapter focuses on the distribution of intergovernmental finances in Virginia. Specifically, it analyzes the distribution of state-level public resources in the Commonwealth of Virginia that takes place as a result of state-to-local intergovernmental transfers. The analysis suggests that, as a result of the manner in which state revenues are collected and allocated back to localities, some Virginians contribute significantly more to the Commonwealth budget in taxes than they receive back in local benefits, while other state residents receive more in benefits than they pay in taxes.

Mental Health And Resource Utilization Among Underrepresented Students Transitioning To College In The United States, Yoojin Kook, Thomas P. Le, Nyx Robey, Elizabeth Raposa

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

College students from historically underrepresented backgrounds (i.e., first-generation, low-income, and/or ethnic/racial minorities) may be less likely to utilize professional mental health resources on campus despite experiencing increased psychological distress. This study examined how psychosocial distress, mental health resource utilization, and perceived barriers to mental health care may differ for underrepresented and non-underrepresented students during the first semester of college. Participants were administered surveys as they entered college and at the end of the fall of their first semester. Our sample consisted of 131 underrepresented students and 154 students from non-underrepresented backgrounds. Underrepresented students showed a sharper increase in depressive symptoms …
