Reassessing The Role Of Polynesian Rats (Rattus Exulans) In Rapa Nui (Easter Island) Deforestation: Faunal Evidence And Ecological Modeling, Terry L. Hunt, Carl P. Lipo

Anthropology Datasets

The role of introduced Polynesian rats (Rattus exulans) in the deforestation of Rapa Nui remains a contentious issue. Several critics, including Mieth and Bork (2010), argue that rats played a negligible role compared to human impacts. We address the role of rats through three lines of evidence: (1) a response to rats-are-neglible arguments, including problematic continental analogies and misunderstandings of seed predation impacts; (2) analysis of rat remains from Anakena excavations (1986-2005) showing that rats decreased by 93% over time, contradicting claims they served as a “fallback food” following resource depletion; and (3) ecological modeling demonstrating that introduced …

La Integración De La Literatura Chicana En La Enseñanza Del Español Como Lengua Adicional Hacia La Competencia Cultural Y Lingüística En Ee.Uu., Marina Linares Klauke Jan 2025

La Integración De La Literatura Chicana En La Enseñanza Del Español Como Lengua Adicional Hacia La Competencia Cultural Y Lingüística En Ee.Uu., Marina Linares Klauke

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Climate Change Effects On The 2022–2023 High Impact Series Of Atmospheric Rivers Along The United States West Coast, Hunter Martinez-Buehrer Jan 2025

Climate Change Effects On The 2022–2023 High Impact Series Of Atmospheric Rivers Along The United States West Coast, Hunter Martinez-Buehrer

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Atmospheric rivers (ARs) are long, narrow bands of water vapor transport that are commonly associated with a low-level jet ahead of a cold front of an extratropical cyclone. When multiple ARs occur in succession of one another within a certain aggregation period, it is known as an AR family. ARs and AR families are important to the U.S. West Coast—and especially California’s—hydroclimate, providing both beneficial and hazardous precipitation to the region. Recent studies have suggested that not all ARs and, thus, AR families, respond similarly to a warming climate. Therefore, it is critical to better understand how climate change impacts …

Mental Health And Belongingness Of Doctor Of Physical Therapy Students: A Mixed Methods Study Centering Black Student Voices, Robyn Redline Jan 2025

Mental Health And Belongingness Of Doctor Of Physical Therapy Students: A Mixed Methods Study Centering Black Student Voices, Robyn Redline

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Background: Despite efforts to increase recruitment and enrollment, the physical therapy profession lacks Black students and clinicians. Racially marginalized students have higher rates of academic difficulty during physical therapy education (PTE) than White students. Mental health and belongingness have been proposed as prerequisites for reaching academic achievement and attaining one’s full potential. Conversely, poor mental health and lack of belongingness during PTE may contribute to the underrepresentation of Black Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students and clinicians. Yet not enough is known about the relationships between mental health, belongingness, and the academic achievement of DPT students. Purpose: This study aimed …

Dietary Patterns And Nutrition Education: A Comparison Of Eating Patterns, Physical Activity Levels And Nutrition Education Of Older Adults That Utilize Community Meal Assistance Services In The Community, Teresa A. Ridolfi

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

The older adult population is rapidly increasing, with projections indicating that 21% of the general population will be 65 years or older by 2030. This demographic shift is accompanied by a rise in health co-morbidities such as obesity, heart disease, certain types of cancers, and diabetes, which are exacerbated by inadequate nutrition and decreased physical function. This thesis examines dietary patterns, physical activity levels, and nutrition education among older adults utilizing community meal assistance services in Northern Illinois. The study aims to evaluate nutrient intakes, adherence to dietary guidelines, and physical activity levels among this population, using a descriptive epidemiological …

Fraudulent Transfer Law’S Forgotten Foundations, Douglas G. Baird Jan 2025

Fraudulent Transfer Law’S Forgotten Foundations, Douglas G. Baird

The University of Chicago Business Law Review

Fraudulent transfer law is one of the principal bulwarks of private law. Fraudulent transfer law, however, now faces a crisis. Courts have long assumed that it was easy to determine whether a debtor made a fraudulent transfer of its property. One could use traditional markers of ownership to determine whether the debtor transferred property to a confederate. But today, most assets are intangible. Transactions happen in the blink of an eye, and they take place entirely on corporate books. Reliance on simple notions of what constitutes a “transfer” of property is wholly inadequate. Understanding what it means for a debtor …

Risk, Return, And Restoration: A Fundamental Approach To Pre-Judgment Interest, Yijia Lu, Scott Vincent Jan 2025

Risk, Return, And Restoration: A Fundamental Approach To Pre-Judgment Interest, Yijia Lu, Scott Vincent

The University of Chicago Business Law Review

Courts routinely miscalculate pre-judgment interest, thereby failing to fully restore injured parties. Because pre-judgment interest can be substantial—often rivaling or even exceeding the underlying award—errors in its calculation are important and may create distorted incentives, promote opportunistic behavior, and suppress investment and economic activity. These errors often stem from reliance on speculation to determine the costs covered by interest. This Article argues that such speculation is unnecessary. The litigation claim is identified as the asset which has burdened the injured party with risks and costs imposed by the wrongful act, eliminating the need to rely on a hypothetical asset to …

Textualism As A Pro-Employee Force In Employment Discrimination Law, Alex Reed Jan 2025

Textualism As A Pro-Employee Force In Employment Discrimination Law, Alex Reed

The University of Chicago Business Law Review

Textualism has gotten a bad rap, at least insofar as employment discrimination law is concerned. Derided by antidiscrimination scholars as an interpretive smokescreen concerned less with faithfully construing statutory text than reliably yielding pro-employer results, textualism is understood to pose an existential threat to employment discrimination law. This Article challenges academic orthodoxy by demonstrating that, in practice, textualism is correlated with employee-favorable outcomes. Specifically, the Article examines a subset of the Supreme Court’s major employment discrimination cases over the past thirty years and finds that textualism is twice as likely to be associated with outcomes benefiting employees than it is …

Limitations Of Secular Values In Constitutions Of The Kingdom Of Thailand: A Critical Study Of The Concepts Of Rights And Liberty, Chayanin Nuisin Jan 2025

Limitations Of Secular Values In Constitutions Of The Kingdom Of Thailand: A Critical Study Of The Concepts Of Rights And Liberty, Chayanin Nuisin

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

This dissertation aims to examine the limitations of secular values within the context of all twenty constitutions of the Kingdom of Thailand. The analysis focuses in particular on rights and liberties as core secular values. The study considers their origins, development, and the obstacles that have hindered the realization of rights and liberties in Thai society. The findings suggest that secular values—especially modern concepts of rights and liberties—emerged during the Reformation period under King Rama V, when Siam sought to adjust itself to the conditions of modernity. This was a period marked by strong Western influence, which brought with it …

Development Of Self-Healing Polymer From Bio-Based Benzoxazine Blend With Poly(Ethylene Glycol) For Anti-Biofouling Applications, Pharaporn Yodkum Jan 2025

Development Of Self-Healing Polymer From Bio-Based Benzoxazine Blend With Poly(Ethylene Glycol) For Anti-Biofouling Applications, Pharaporn Yodkum

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Biofouling remains a significant challenge in marine industries, as conventional coatings often lose their antifouling efficacy once they become damaged. Incorporating self-healing capabilities into antifouling coatings has therefore emerged as a promising strategy to extend service life and maintain long-term performance. In this study, self-healing polymers were developed based on a bio-derived benzoxazine resin (E-fa), synthesized from renewable precursors including eugenol (a phenol source), furfurylamine (an amine source), and paraformaldehyde, and subsequently blended with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG). The blends were formulated with varying weight ratios (95/5, 90/10, 85/15, and 80/20 wt/wt%) and PEG molecular weights (PEG-600, PEG-1500, and PEG-4000). This …
