Solution-Focused, Strengths-Based Practice: An Integrated And Future-Orientated Approach To Resistance In Child Protection And Welfare Service Users?, Susan Flynn Dr

Irish Journal of Applied Social Studies

This article presents a theoretical exposition of an integrated solution-focused, strengths-based perspective. It does so through a thematic review of literature. The proposition is that solution-focused, strengths-based techniques can offer practitioners useful modes of working with resistance in child protection and welfare service users. The issue of working well with service users who present as resistant to the work, is complex and challenging in child protection and welfare practice. Practitioners must strive for rigorous, humane and compassionate practice, which never distracts from or compromises child safety. A thematic review of literature on solution-focused, strengths-based practice is presented. Therein, relevant theoretical …

The Legacy Of Redlining: Examining Educational Inequalities In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Emily Brennom Jan 2025

The Legacy Of Redlining: Examining Educational Inequalities In Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Emily Brennom

Honors Program Theses

This study examines the lasting impact that redlining, a discriminatory housing practice from the 1930s, has on educational inequalities in the Cedar Rapids Community School District today. Using historical Home Owners’ Loan Corporation (HOLC) maps, it analyzes how neighborhoods located within previously “high risk” (“D” or red zones) neighborhoods correlate with present day disparities in regards to racial composition, socioeconomic status, low-income, and high school graduation rates. The research further investigates how white flight and urban disinvestment intensified racial and economic inequalities in these areas. Limitations of HOLC maps as the only measure of redlining emphasize the need for policy …

Critical Environmental Communication Framework, Shumaila J. Bhatti, Srivi Ramasubramanian, Andrea Feldpausch-Parker, Bruno Takahashi, Silje Kristiansen Jan 2025

Critical Environmental Communication Framework, Shumaila J. Bhatti, Srivi Ramasubramanian, Andrea Feldpausch-Parker, Bruno Takahashi, Silje Kristiansen

Media Studies - All Scholarship

This study develops a Critical Environmental Communication (CEC) framework to assess the landscape of Environmental Communication research and to what extent and in which ways critical and justice-oriented perspectives are included. The CEC framework consists of four interconnected themes: (a) Marginalized Ecocultural Identities, (b) Context and Scale, (c) Power and Agency, and (d) Justice, Equity, Diversity, Access, and Inclusion (JEDAI). Using this framework in a bibliometric analysis examining 1,297 Environmental Communication publications, we assess the occurrence of these themes in the scholarship. Our analysis found that Marginalized Ecocultural Identities, and Context and Scale were most frequently occurring, while Power and …

Re-Centering Relation In Media Literacy Practice, Paul Mihalidis, Bobbie Foster, Shannon Burth, Srivi Ramasubramanian, Melissa Tully, Patrick R. Johnson

Media Studies - All Scholarship

As calls for media literacy in formal and informal learning spaces continue to grow, educators’ understanding of media literacies and their purposes remains complex. In 2021, the authors of this paper led a multi-methods research project on media literacy education in the United States, focusing on impact and equity. Findings showed that educators share a commitment to equity and justice but are unclear on how to incorporate them into their work. In response, our research team developed a field guide that maps out equitable media literacy practices for classrooms and communities. In this study, we detail the findings from 11 …

Substance And Process In Corporate Law: Theory And History, William Wilson Bratton, Simone M. Sepe Jan 2025

Substance And Process In Corporate Law: Theory And History, William Wilson Bratton, Simone M. Sepe

Articles

Over the last half-century, corporate law has moved from substance to process as the Delaware courts have avoided direct review of the merits of transactions, substituting review of the processes that brought the transactions about. This is a familiar observation, perhaps a truism. But it is a truism that is undertheorized. This article addresses the theory gap, suggesting a structural reason for the trend. Simply, the courts avoid reviewing substance because they lack a theory of value. The theoretical void disables direct evaluation of transactional merits. Process review avoids this problem. Processes and their operation are the lawyer's stock in …

Warith Scientific Journal of Engineering and Technology

Loneliness is a prevalent and global problem for all people, and it can adversely affect their quality of life. Many research investigations have confirmed the negative psychological impacts of loneliness on people’s the unwanted impact of loneliness. Yet, these interventions are missing the power of reasoning to predict the onset of loneliness. Consequently, this paper presented the work of developing a computational cognitive agent model of loneliness using a causal networking modeling approach by relying on discrepancy model as a benchmark to serve as analytics engine for a companion robot design. Loneliness determinants and their causal relationships were identified from …

Minimizing Fasting Requirements To Maximize Patient Satisfaction Prior To A Scheduled Cardiac Catheterization, Kierra Thies Jan 2025

Minimizing Fasting Requirements To Maximize Patient Satisfaction Prior To A Scheduled Cardiac Catheterization, Kierra Thies

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects

Background: Patients are often kept NPO (nil per os), or “nothing by mouth,” longer than necessary before cardiac catheterization procedures. Local Problem: Patients scheduled for cardiac catheterization procedures receive instructions to begin fasting at midnight on the day of their procedure regardless of their scheduled procedural start time. This directive results in patient dissatisfaction as patients are fasting longer than current guideline recommendation.
Methods: The facility updated its order set to align with the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) fasting guidelines for scheduled cardiac catheterizations. To evaluate patient satisfaction, a 6-item survey was administered to 169 individuals undergoing cardiac catheterization. …

Impact Of Acuity-Based Assignments On The Satisfaction And Burnout Of Inpatient Rehabilitation Nurses, Madelyn Miller Smith Jan 2025

Impact Of Acuity-Based Assignments On The Satisfaction And Burnout Of Inpatient Rehabilitation Nurses, Madelyn Miller Smith

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects

Background: With half of healthcare workers reporting burnout, job dissatisfaction and burnout are nursing epidemics. Staffing shortages and heavy workloads are leading dissatisfiers. Acuity-based assignments (ABAs) can predict patient needs and equitably distribute workload among nurses.
Local problem: Nurses of a 21-bed inpatient rehabilitation facility identified burnout related to workload. There was no standard practice for creating assignments, and the existing acuity measure was not rehab-specific.
Methods: An ABA tool was implemented over 12 weeks. Nurse satisfaction and burnout were measured with an abbreviated Copenhagen Burnout Inventory and the Nurse Satisfaction with the Quality of Care Scale, which were administered …

Using Shared Governance To Improve Oral Care Documentation In The Inpatient Setting, Angela G. Arseneau Jan 2025

Using Shared Governance To Improve Oral Care Documentation In The Inpatient Setting, Angela G. Arseneau

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Practice Innovation Projects

Background: The concept of shared governance in nursing encompasses shared decision-making between leaders and bedside nurses, which includes areas of evidencebased practice projects and nursing research. Using shared governance as a way of implementing desired change can positively impact patient outcomes.
Local Problem: The inpatient med-surg unit at a small rural hospital was below the facility’s threshold for the documentation of oral care. Current standards require oral care to be performed and documented two times during a 24-hour period for each admitted patient 90% of the time. The unit currently documents oral care at a rate of 35%.
Methods: …

The Siren Song Of Territoriality, Robin J. Effron, Alan M. Trammell Jan 2025

The Siren Song Of Territoriality, Robin J. Effron, Alan M. Trammell

Scholarly Articles

Territoriality—the theory that a state’s physical borders determine its power and sovereignty—boasts a long, venerable history. For centuries, it served as the dominant political theory for myriad ideas. It defined a wide range of doctrines, including personal jurisdiction, choice of law, and prescriptive jurisdiction. By the middle of the twentieth century, though, this rigid territoriality no longer described or responded to the challenges of a society that had grown increasingly mobile and interconnected. Courts replaced inflexible territorial theories with more functional theories rooted in fairness and state regulatory interests.

In recent years, territoriality has seen a curious resurgence. The Supreme …
