A New Deep Decoder Type Cascaded Feedforward Neural Network For Critical Heat Flux Prediction In Power Reactors, Rehan Zubair Khalid, Atta Ullah, Asifullah Khan, Mansoor Hameed Inayat, Muthanna H. Al-Dahhan

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Critical Heat Flux (CHF) is a fundamental parameter for ensuring the performance, reliability, safety, and economic viability of water-cooled nuclear reactors. Despite its significance, the absence of a deterministic theory for CHF prediction poses a substantial challenge in thermal engineering. Consequently, various experimental and numerical models have been developed, yet no universally accepted model comprehensively addresses the wide range of flow conditions encountered in practical applications. The accurate prediction of CHF remains a complex and critical task. This work introduces a novel Deep Decoder Type Cascaded feedforward Neural Network (DD-CFNN) to predict CHF across a broad spectrum of operating conditions. …

Mechanical And Thermal Characterization Of Additively Manufactured Carbon/Nylon 12 And Carbon/Peek Composites, Matik Heskin, Bradley Deuser, Thomas P. Schuman, K. Chandrashekhara, John Bayldon, Jeff Degrange, Steven Patterson, Neiko Levenhagen

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study explores additive manufacturing of carbon fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites using the Composite-Based Additive Manufacturing (CBAM) process. Carbon/Nylon 12 and Carbon/PEEK composites were fabricated and evaluated through mechanical (compression, tensile, flexural, and impact) and thermal (DSC and TGA) tests. Carbon/PEEK exhibited superior mechanical performance, with 97.5% higher tensile strength, 79.8% higher elastic modulus, and 59.6% higher flexural strength compared to Carbon/Nylon 12. Thermal testing showed that Carbon/PEEK had higher thermal stability, beginning degradation at 350 °C versus 298 °C for Carbon/Nylon. These results indicate that CBAM-fabricated Carbon/PEEK composites are suitable for applications requiring high strength and temperature resistance.

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The crystal structures of polymorphs II of acetophenone azines YpPhRCNNCRPhYp with R = CH3 and Y = Cl (1M), Br (2M), and CH3 (8M) are discussed. The azine molecules in polymorphs II are Ci-symmetric with trans-azine moieties and conrotatory phenyl twists. Polymorphs 1M-I and 2M-I contain C2-symmetric enantiomers with pronounced azine twists and disrotatory phenyl twists and allow for strong lateral double T-contacts. The three polymorphs II exemplify the new Paradigm IV for the supramolecular architectures of "laterally offset diarenes" and result in "shiplap/flat" idioteloamphiphile monolayers. Intralayer lateral attraction is provided by edge-to-face arene-arene contacts …

Reimagining The Music Industry: In Search Of A More Perfect Union, Loren E. Mulraine -- Professor Of Law

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

This Article challenges the long-standing accepted business model of the music industry, including recording contract terms, ownership of masters, artist recoupment, and copyright terminations. It explores the negative implications of failing to revise these methods and neglecting to create a more equitable relationship between artists and recording companies. Indeed, the music industry is an outlier from almost every commercial industry in its financing structure. As such, this Article suggests that the future industry model should include equity ownership of master recordings. It then reviews the need to revise contract terms and eliminate the unilateral options and the unduly burdensome clauses …

Optimizing Acid Mist Suppression: Unraveling Surfactant Effects On Bubble Formation And Bursting Dynamics In Copper Electrowinning, Ashish Kakoria, Mirza Muhammad Zaid, Aamir Iqbal, Ellen Amoako Afful, Guang Xu

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The working mechanism of surfactant to reduce acid mist in copper electrowinning system is not well understood. Most of the studies are based on the surface tension reduction phenomenon but this is not the only function that causes acid mist reduction. In this paper, we investigated the effect of different surfactants on a bubble's residence time, terminal velocity, flow regime, and bursting dynamics using a high-speed camera. We have evaluated five different surfactants and found that the presence of surfactants reduces the terminal velocity, bubble diameter, and increases the residence time of the bubble in electrolyte. Especially for FC-1100, the …

Effective Approaches To The Dynamical Properties Of Two Distinguishable Bose Polarons, F. Theel, S. I. Mistakidis, P. Schmelcher Jan 2025

Effective Approaches To The Dynamical Properties Of Two Distinguishable Bose Polarons, F. Theel, S. I. Mistakidis, P. Schmelcher

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We explore effective approaches for describing the dynamics of induced interactions among two noninteracting distinguishable impurities (Bose polarons) when their couplings to the host species are switched on. First, we evaluate the time-dependent characteristics of each polaron through reduced single-particle models. Their validity is ultimately judged by comparing them to observables obtained within a many-body variational approach. We argue that utilizing a time-dependent optimization process with the effective mass and frequency being fitting parameters leads to an accurate matching on the level of one-body observables with the prediction of the many-body method. Next, we construct two-body effective models, which, in …

Gamification And Geography Education: A Survey And Typology Of Games, Ruth Ohaka Jan 2025

Gamification And Geography Education: A Survey And Typology Of Games, Ruth Ohaka

Graduate Research Papers

Gamification in education transforms traditional, non-gaming contexts (i.e., classrooms) by incorporating challenges and scenarios with their own rules, stories, and stakes. In geography education, teachers have sought ways to gamify the classroom, develop students’ spatial reasoning, and develop place-based capabilities for critical thinking and problem-solving, making complex geographical and environmental concepts more relatable and accessible to the students. Regardless of the documented achievements with gamification, such as more engagement, deeper understanding, and increased motivation, there remains a lack of a comprehensive typology of games used within geography education. This paper aims to develop a typology of games used in education …
