Competencies For Financial Aid Leaders In Higher Education, Megan L. Chaffee
Competencies For Financial Aid Leaders In Higher Education, Megan L. Chaffee
All Capstone Projects
In the continuously evolving higher education landscape, financial aid leaders play a pivotal role in advancing institutional success and improving student outcomes. However, limited research exists on the specific competencies required for effective financial aid leadership. This quantitative study investigated the professional competencies deemed critical for successful leadership among financial aid leaders at public colleges and universities in the United States. Grounded in a skills-based leadership framework, the study examined how financial aid leaders perceive the importance of various professional competencies, how these perceptions differ based on individual and institutional characteristics, and how such competencies are developed. Data was collected …

Managing Stress: Black Women In Senior Leadership Positions In Higher Education, Collice L. King
All Capstone Projects
Northouse (2016) defines leadership as a process in which an individual persuades a group or individuals to achieve a universal objective. When leaders are stressed, it can affect not only their work performance, but also the work performance of the follower. Historically, Black women have been underrepresented in senior leadership positions in higher education, making it critical to study the unique stressors they experience and the strategies they employ to manage them. By developing deeper insight into the experiences of Black women, presidents, institutions, boards, search committees, and search firms can work to remove barriers Black women face in their …

Perceptions Of Implementation From Higher Education Participants In Online Course Design Professional Development, Scott B. Thesen
All Capstone Projects
Many higher education instructors treat online teaching as a modern form of correspondence, believing students learn on their own when content is placed in a learning management system, but learning also takes place through other forms of interaction beyond solely with content. To show best practices for the online modality, instructors at a Midwest regional mid-sized higher education institution participated in professional development using the Improving Your Online Course (IYOC) workshop from Quality Matters™ (QM), a globally recognized authority in best practices for online course design. Level 3 of Kirkpatrick’s Four Levels of Training Evaluation was used to evaluate the …
The Lived Experiences Of Underrepresented Students Navigating Standardized Testing Inequities In College Admissions, Selena Musleh
The Lived Experiences Of Underrepresented Students Navigating Standardized Testing Inequities In College Admissions, Selena Musleh
All Capstone Projects
Ongoing debates surrounding equity in college admissions have raised questions about the role of standardized testing. This qualitative study employed a phenomenological design to examine how underrepresented students perceive the equity and accessibility of standardized testing within the college admissions process. Grounded in Critical Race Theory (CRT) and Socioeconomic Status (SES) Theory, the study investigates how structural inequities shape students’ experiences with admissions testing policies such as the SAT and ACT. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with eight undergraduate students (N = 8) from underrepresented backgrounds who had participated in standardized testing as part of their admissions process. Using …
Movement And Mastery: The Artistic Evolution Of Artemisia Gentileschi, 1613-1640, Molly E. Russom
Movement And Mastery: The Artistic Evolution Of Artemisia Gentileschi, 1613-1640, Molly E. Russom
Capstone Showcase
This thesis examines the artistic evolution of Artemisia Gentileschi between 1613 and 1640, focusing on how her extensive travels shaped the development of her style, subject matter, and professional identity. While Artemisia’s work is frequently interpreted through a biographical or feminist lens, this study emphasizes her artistic agency and technical mastery by situating her paintings within the distinct artistic environments of Florence, Rome, and Venice. Through visual and contextual analysis of her key works—Penitent Magdalene, Judith and her Maidservant with the Head of Holofernes, and Corisca and the Satyr—this paper demonstrates Artemisia’s evolving use of …
An Eye For An Eye Makes A Vigilant Society, Liam C. Preyer
An Eye For An Eye Makes A Vigilant Society, Liam C. Preyer
Capstone Showcase
Vigilantism is one of the oldest practices of mankind; for as long as there have been moral and legal laws to govern us and live by, there have been individuals who have sought justice outside these systems. Vigilantism is the response to failures in the justice system, and in the United States in particular, we have seen examples from the Western Frontier to the modern-day digital landscape. This paper will explore the nature of vigilante justice through historical, psychological, media-driven, legal, and digital lenses. We will explore how cultural narratives, media influences, government actions, and psychological motivations have shaped the …
The Gift Of Exit Financing, Robert W. Miller
The Gift Of Exit Financing, Robert W. Miller
Faculty Publications
Aggressive liability management exercises have spilled over into bankruptcy court and exit financing is often the prize in the center of the arena. Debtors no longer rely upon gifting, the traditional strategy for buying plan support. Instead, they can replicate gifting's benefits in a more defensible package by funneling discounted subscription rights to chosen constituencies as part of exit financing.
Recognizing exit financing's distortive power, courts responded by evaluating the quality of negotiations and reviewing precedent transactions. Meanwhile, commentators suggest heightened monitoring and informal guardrails. All of these approaches ignore the shortcomings of judicial valuation. Market testing is the only …

Does Ethical Ideology Really Matter In Consumer Responses To Corporate Wrongdoing? The Effects On Trust And Word-Of-Mouth Recommendations, Grzegorz Zasuwa, Alicja Węgierak
Journal of Marketing and Consumer Behaviour in Emerging Markets
The purpose of this study is to better understand how the ethical ideologies of consumers influence their responses to perceived corporate social irresponsibility (CSI), focusing on trust and word-of-mouth (WOM) recommendations. Data were collected through a survey involving 627 car owners in Poland, using a real-life case of CSI concerning a major car manufacturer fined for misleading consumers about diesel emissions. The analysis employed partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). The results indicate that moral idealism amplifies the negative effects of CSI on WOM, while moral relativism produces neutrality towards CSI. Specifically, it appears that highly idealistic individuals are …

Who Are The Future Leaders In Dental Education?, Marsha A. Pyle D.D.S., M.Ed., Karen P. West D.M.D, M.Ph.
Journal of the American College of Dentists
Future leaders in oral health education will need a refined traditional skillset characterized by virtues, core competencies, and emotional intelligence. However, the lingering impact of the COVID-19 era and its influence on workforce development and talent retention have altered approaches to leadership training and succession planning in business and education sectors. In addition to adaptability and flexibility, future leaders require dynamic strategic skills to navigate the rapid pace of change plus the exponential advancements in technologies affecting equipment, software, and decision-making processes. The leaders of tomorrow need to be developed across traditional and new-age leadership characteristics. Current leaders can influence …

Reflections On The Importance Of Critical Theory To Teaching Environmental Law, Sean Kammer
Reflections On The Importance Of Critical Theory To Teaching Environmental Law, Sean Kammer
Faculty Publications
The freedom of students to learn about critical approaches to understanding their world is under sustained political attack. In this time of increasing environmental peril and political dysfunction, Professor Sean M. Kammer reflects upon the importance of critical theory (including Critical Race Theory) to understanding—and ultimately redressing—the related problems of resource scarcity and environmental degradation. While these problems can surely be described in terms of “economic inefficiencies” or “ecological disturbances,” as they most often are, they must also be understood (and taught) as problems of colonial exploitation and violence. For example, one cannot understand Justice John Marshall’s discovery doctrine or …

Rasa3 Identified As A Potential Effector Of The Brain G Protein Gâºo By Mass Spectrometry, Halie Adesin Bell
Yale Graduate School of Arts and Sciences Dissertations
G⍺o, the alpha subunit of the most abundant heterotrimeric G protein in the brain, mediates signaling by opioids and by many neuromodulators to inhibit neural function. An open question is whether activated G⍺o-GTP directly binds to and regulates effector molecules, like all other animal G⍺ proteins, or if it signals solely by releasing Gβ subunits. Using mouse brain lysates as native source of G⍺o and its potential effectors, I analyzed immunopurified G⍺o protein complexes by mass spectrometry. I identified several proteins that interact preferentially with inactive or active G⍺o. I focused my analysis on proteins that are significantly upregulated in …

Exploring Historical Landscapes: The Public Land Survey System And Florida's Original 1820 - 1845 Survey, Georgianna Strode, Beverly Renard, Sophie Coppage, Elizabeth Smith
Florida Geographer
The Land Ordinance of 1785 established the rectangular township-and-section survey system that became the foundation of the Public Land Survey System (PLSS), enabling the United States government to systematically map, divide, and sell western lands as the nation expanded. By imposing a standardized, federally controlled grid, the PLSS facilitated orderly settlement, taxation, and land markets while consolidating state and federal authority over territory. However, this system prioritized administrative efficiency over local geography and existing land tenure, contributing to Indigenous dispossession, ecological distortion, and survey inaccuracies whose effects persist in modern land records. The original field notes and survey plats produced …

Florida Geographer
A multitude of Floridas exist in the collective, cultural imagination. Our relationships with each are complex and varied. From hikers wading waist deep with gators in the Fakahatchee Strand to suburban yards dotted with plastic pink flamingos, the people of Florida possess myriad, ever-evolving relationships to place. Nowhere is this more apparent than in South Florida, where high rises tower above Biscayne Bay and the Wall Street of the South while the land sinks below the weight of climate change and king tides. Imagine the multicultural tango that is the Magic City juxtaposed with the outflow of the River of …

My Favorite Florida Place: The Giant Ground Sloth Of Clam Bayou, Amanda Hagood
Florida Geographer
I first heard about the Clam Bayou Giant Ground Sloth from a local fisherman in Gulfport, FL. It was a warm spring day, and I had taken my infant son for a stroll through Clam Bayou Nature Park, a quiet spot on the eastern fringe of our little Gulf Coast town. While we paused to watch this seasoned angler cleaning his catch, he spun out three or four tales, every now and then tossing a spare fishy bit to the herons assembled eagerly around the DO NOT FEED WILDLIFE sign. Each yarn was gnarlier than the last, but the story …

My Favorite Florida Place: Florida Has Hills Too!, Christopher Meindl
Florida Geographer
It is common to hear people claim that Florida’s most significant topographic features are ant hills; and in some parts of the state, this is no doubt true. But it is also true that Florida has several areas of somewhat higher elevation. With apologies to central Florida’s Mount Dora (elev. 184 feet above sea level), Florida has no mountains. Many geographers are familiar with the elongated Lake Wales Ridge, running between the appropriately named Highlands County in south central Florida (near Lake Placid) up the spine of the peninsula to Lake County, just west of big Lake Apopka. The northern …
