The Powers That Perpetuate Child Marriage In India, China, And The United States, Ava Kegler Jan 2025

The Powers That Perpetuate Child Marriage In India, China, And The United States, Ava Kegler

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Child marriage is a crisis that continues to be practiced in many countries around the world. This is not to discredit the progress that organizations like the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and Girls Not Brides have made to aid countries in their process of eliminating child marriage. However, the commitment to completing the UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of ending child marriage by 2030 seems less achievable as we enter 2025. The question this thesis considers is why this goal is challenging to reach. While child marriage is prominent in developing nations, caused by high poverty rates, low education, …

Elucidating The Non-Shivering Thermogenesis Response In The Black-Capped Chickadee (Poecile Atricapillus), Sweta Chand Jan 2025

Elucidating The Non-Shivering Thermogenesis Response In The Black-Capped Chickadee (Poecile Atricapillus), Sweta Chand

Dissertations and Theses

The adaptation of small birds to cold environments involves mechanisms for both heat conservation and heat generation. While minimizing heat loss reduces the energy needed to maintain body temperature, thermogenesis remains essential. Shivering and non-shivering thermogenesis (NST) are two likely mechanisms supporting cold adaptation in small avian species. Although sarcolipin (SLN) aids NST in small mammals, studies in birds such as Dark- eyed Juncos have shown no increase or even a decrease in SLN expression during cold exposure, suggesting limited involvement. This may reflect biological differences or limitations of mRNA- focused sequencing, which excludes long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) capable of …

First-Principles Modeling Of Nitazoxanide Analogues As Prospective Pfor-Targeted Antibacterials, Islam Gomaa Jan 2025

First-Principles Modeling Of Nitazoxanide Analogues As Prospective Pfor-Targeted Antibacterials, Islam Gomaa

Nanotechnology Research Centre

Pyruvate:ferredoxin oxidoreductase (PFOR) is a key Achilles’ heel in anaerobic pathogens. We integrate electronic-structure calculations (DFT), cheminformatic QSAR metrics, and residue-resolved docking to distill a concise “recognition code” and translate it into practical design rules. Using nitazoxanide (Nita; ΔG(bind) ≈ −10.0 kcal·mol−1) as a well-established reference, productive binding requires a conserved triad: a hydrogen-bond donor addressing Thr-997 and Cys-840, a π–π stack with Phe-869, and a recurrent π–σ contact to Thr-997 that orients the scaffold. Deacetylation to tizoxanide unmasks the phenolic donor and raises local electrophilicity, yet it also slightly loosens pocket packing (−9.6 kcal·mol−1). Strategic halogenation introduces a σ-hole …

An Exploratory Study On The Usability Of Distance Learning Technology In The U.S. Army Recruiting And Retention Command, Rony Arizandieta Rodas

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

This exploratory study investigates how integrating distance learning technologies within the U.S. Army impacts enlisted soldiers in terms of implementation, usability, and long-term career mobility. With internet-based education, active-duty enlisted personnel can pursue academic degrees from accredited military-affiliated institutions while simultaneously fulfilling operational duties, deployments, and daily training. The U.S. Army Recruiting Command has capitalized on this advancement by framing online education and digital accessibility as core components of its enlistment strategy. This approach is particularly relevant given that a significant proportion of new recruits originate from rural and economically disadvantaged areas, where access to higher education is often limited, …
