Our Partisan Supreme Court And An Essential First Step Toward Reclaiming What's Been Lost, Gary Simson Jan 2025

Our Partisan Supreme Court And An Essential First Step Toward Reclaiming What's Been Lost, Gary Simson

Articles

Partisan decision-making by even only one Supreme Court Justice in a single case is not a trivial matter. The ill effects are greatly compounded when five or more Justices of a similar partisan bent regularly deliberate about, and decide, cases in a partisan way. At that point, we’ve got what can fairly be described as a partisan Supreme Court.

I argue in this Article that, to all of our great misfortune, a partisan Supreme Court is very much what we’ve got today. On a more hopeful note, though, I also argue that although reforming the Court to be a much …

The Dangers Of Denying Prosecutorial Independence: Wrongful Convictions, Official Misconduct, And Public Corruption, Meagan R. Hurley Jan 2025

The Dangers Of Denying Prosecutorial Independence: Wrongful Convictions, Official Misconduct, And Public Corruption, Meagan R. Hurley

Articles

In recent years, desires to limit prosecutorial discretion have become the focus of a national dialogue on the authority of the elected officials, allegations of their misconduct, and the need for stronger accountability measures. Legislatures across the country have considered a slew of bills aimed at diminishing prosecutorial power by prohibiting “progressive” office policies, creating oversight commissions, and promulgating simplified processes to recall or remove prosecutors entirely. In various jurisdictions, those proposals are now coming to fruition. While heightened scrutiny for some of the legal system’s most powerful leaders may seem attractive, an analysis of national trends aimed at curtailing …

Investigating The Structural And Functional Roles Of Transcriptionally Active Rice Transposons, Eimaan Ahmad, Leelakrishna Angadala, Udhay Nallapati, Rushil Mehrotra, Braham Dhillon, Navi Gill Dhillon

Bioinformatics

Transposable elements (TEs) are notorious given their contributions to genome dynamics, evolution, gene structure, and regulation of gene expression. Famously once branded as ‘junk DNA’, TEs are now known to play significant roles in genome structure and function. Plethora of data generated from sequencing projects have advanced the study of transposons but their large size -often larger than read lengths of most sequencing platforms- has limited TE research due to limited coverages in sequenced datasets. Additionally, high copy number of TEs and high sequence similarity -often greater than 80%- between multiple copies of a TE family may lead to erroneous …

Meeting Where Students Are: Stump The Librarian, Beth Hendrickson, Sara Decaro, Chris Labuda

Faculty Submissions

For two years, librarians Beth, Sara, and Chris, have been holding 'Stump the Librarian' events in Willard Hall. Gamifying the reference interview, Stump the Librarian events allow students to ask librarians silly, niche, or complex questions in the quest to 'stump' us. By meeting the students in their own space, it allows for more recognition for what librarians can offer students, lowers library anxiety, and allows better understanding of students' interests and research. This presentation offers insight into thinking outside of the box for engaging with students and gives faculty an opportunity to step outside of their comfort zone.

The Threshold Of Experience: Critiquing The Self And Society Through Domestic Exploration, Janessa Douds

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024

This thesis body of artwork investigates theories of “home,” the phenomenology of space, and the uncanny, exploring where the familiar becomes unfamiliar and the ordinary transforms into an enigmatic realm. Through depictions of domestic environments, these paintings challenge conventional perceptions of space and confront the eerie in the everyday to reflect on how those spaces shape our emotional and psychological experiences.

Exploring The Reproductive Phenology Of Feral Horses In North America, Mattie Budine Jan 2025

Exploring The Reproductive Phenology Of Feral Horses In North America, Mattie Budine

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Feral horses (Equus ferus caballus) are a prolific species in western North America. Due to their life history traits and history of domestication, they have a longer foaling period compared to native ungulates, such as elk (Cervus canadensis) and mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus). I examined the observed foaling seasons of different regional herds throughout North America to identify if foaling seasons are uniform across latitudes or if they present a latitudinal shift similar to ungulates. My dataset (n=523 foals) consisted of various research studies and unpublished observations of different feral horse herds throughout North America. The results are graphs comparing …

Resting-State Electrodermal Activity In Adults With And Without Adhd, Charles Knowlton

Theses & ETDs

A growing body of literature shows strong evidence for children with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) exhibiting hypoarousal compared to neurotypical children. This research is supported in conditions where stimuli are present and at a resting-state. However, the research with adult ADHD is conflicting. Adults with ADHD have been shown to exhibit no difference, hypoarousal, and hyperarousal compared to neurotypical adults. Therefore, the present study aims to employ a resting-state analysis of electrodermal activity (arousal) between self-reporting adults with ADHD (n = 11) and without ADHD (n = 8). A self-report questionnaire was also utilized to quantify the participant’s ADHD symptoms. Participants …

Perceived Stakeholder Engagement In Corporate Data Responsibility (Cdr) Communication And Its Relationship With Trust In Generative Ai Systems: The Mediating Role Of Algorithmic And Institutional Responsibility., Joon Soo Lim, Chunsik Lee, Donghee Shin, Junga Kim, Jun Zhang

Media Studies - All Scholarship

Proposing corporate data responsibility (CDR) as an emerging dimension ofcorporate social responsibility (CSR), this study examines how consumersperceive their generative AI (GenAI) company’s communication about dataresponsibility, and how these communications influence perceived CDR andtrust in the service. Using data from a national survey of 819 U.S. GenAI users, the findings demonstrate that stakeholder engagement in CDR communica-tion positively influences consumer perceptions of both algorithmic andinstitutional responsibility. Notably, institutional responsibility playsa significant role in enhancing trust in GenAI systems, serving asa cognitive heuristic for evaluating technical algorithmic responsibility. Itsuggests that institutional responsibility bridges the gap between technicalalgorithmic accountability and consumer trust. These …

The American Oligarchy, Match Dawson Jan 2025

The American Oligarchy, Match Dawson

Faculty Articles

What was designed as a constitutional republic, bound by self-rule and democratic accountability, has become an oligarchy camouflaged by the illusion of public sovereignty. The corporate architects of this new world order did not seize power through conquest or force: they legislated, litigated, and purchased it into existence. Oligarchic rule is more than a simple political crisis. It is a democratic one. Just as prior generations have been called upon to preserve the republic against threats to liberty, we now face our own defining challenge and must decide whether to accept a government auctioned to the highest bidder or reclaim …

Look Both Ways: Reflections From A Future Teacher, Kaelyn Trapsi

IdeaFest 2025

Over the past two years I have had the privilege of working in high school environments with students from all walks of life. To sweeten the deal, they were high schools in two different countries. Through College Corps I have been able to work with students at Six Rivers Charter High School for the past two academic years. While helping in classes across many different subjects and electives, I have found ways to connect to students in a way that I appreciated teachers connecting to me when I was in high school. Through an international service learning program to the …

Forage Site Selection Of Woodpeckers In Relation To Tree Species And Stage Of Decay, Jeffrey Soltero Jan 2025

Forage Site Selection Of Woodpeckers In Relation To Tree Species And Stage Of Decay, Jeffrey Soltero

IdeaFest 2025

The main objectives of this study are to determine the variation in forage habitat selection of each of these species located in the Arcata Community Forest, and to see what might influence their forage site selection. I hypothesize that forage site selection for woodpeckers will be influenced by their prey choosing certain tree species and trees in moderate to high stages of decay. The data collected and used to complete my objectives was gathered by surveying multiple trails throughout the Arcata Community Forest, taking note of any woodpeckers engaging in foraging activity along with the species of woodpecker, the species …

Facilitation And Spatial Association Of Common Murres And Brandt’S Cormorants In Northern California, Nathan M. Simpson Jan 2025

Facilitation And Spatial Association Of Common Murres And Brandt’S Cormorants In Northern California, Nathan M. Simpson

IdeaFest 2025

This project set out to examine the hypothesis that Brandt's Cormorants act as a facilitator species to Common Murres. Drone images were taken of the study system during the breeding season of each year to accurately represent the space used by each species. Spatial analysis was conducted on both species to determine if non-random spatial associated occurred at several scales. Additionally, an analysis was conducted to examine how the number of Murres associated with Cormorants changed over time.

Human Disturbance And Foraging Behavior Of Aleutian Geese, Molly Smialkowski

IdeaFest 2025

Interested in the effect of human presence on foraging behavior of geese, I conducted an observational study of Aleutian geese where I compared their behavior between two sites. Individual geese were chosen at random and observed for 5 minutes as average sound in decibels and human count was recorded. During this period the behaviors displayed were also recorded. The analysis outcome highlights the impact that human presence has on the behavior of Aleutian geese.

Habitat Edge Impacts On Predators In The Arcata Community Forest, Megan Singer Jan 2025

Habitat Edge Impacts On Predators In The Arcata Community Forest, Megan Singer

IdeaFest 2025

Predators play a crucial role in ecosystem processes within various habitat types. My study aimed to analyze the impact of habitat edges on predators in the Arcata Community Forest by using remote camera traps to document predator presence in edge versus interior habitat sites. I also conducted supplemental vegetation surveys to compare the mean vegetation density at edge versus interior habitat sites. I predicted that if predator presence is influenced by habitat type and vegetation density, then predator presence would be higher at edge habitat sites than interior habitat sites, and there would be a negative correlation between predator presence …

The Case For Ungraded, Alexandria Rumbel Jan 2025

The Case For Ungraded, Alexandria Rumbel

IdeaFest 2025

We use grades to categorize student achievement and provide feedback, but is this really the best way to foster accountability, prompt meta-cognition, and instill students with an intrinsic love of learning? Despite the near ubiquitous acceptance of grading as a standard feature of secondary and post-secondary education, educational philosophers and educational practitioners have had reservations about grading–practically since its inception. If grading does not lead to the best outcomes for our students, what shall we do instead? "The Case for Ungraded" is a poster created and presented by Alexandria Rumbel, a graduate student in the Master’s of Education program at …
