Small Satellite Conference

Small satellites are playing an increasing role in addressing applications in Earth Observation for scientific, civil and military applications. With all optical systems, this leads to some obvious limitations to the time of day targets can be imaged, which geographic latitudes can be covered, and to a dependency on cloud cover. For some applications this limits the utility of space systems unless low-light and through-cloud imaging information can be obtained in a timely fashion by other cost-effective means. Typically, space based radar systems are significantly more complex, more expensive, and data is more difficult to utilise than equivalent optical systems. …

Small Satellite Conference

Since the launch of the first Cubesats in 2003 significant resources are now being invested worldwide in developing technologies and capabilities that allows nano-satellites to perform more meaningful missions in space. In November 2012 GomSpace will launch the GomX-1 nano-satellite, which features a payload capable of tracking from space trans-oceanic flights by reception of the Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) signal emitted by the aircraft. The future potential uses for space based ADS-B are many and range from the optimization of air space procedures based on statistical data from a few nano-satellites to an operational real-time system for operational air traffic …

Small Satellite Conference

The NASA Office of the Chief Technologist’s (OCT) Small Spacecraft Technology Program (SSPT) has sponsored a 24-month, $11M project called Edison Demonstration of SmallSat Networks (EDSN). The goals of EDSN are to demonstrate a swarm of small, inexpensive satellites with novel on-orbit communications capabilities, and to demonstrate their suitability as a future platform for distributed Space Weather or other scientific measurements that require distributed, multipoint, time-synchronized measurements in low Earth orbit (LEO). EDSN will demonstrate the unique capabilities that a swarm of nanosatellites has to offer, both as a platform for distributed science data acquisition, and as a means of …

The Space Flight Laboratory (SFL) at the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies, in collaboration with the Slovenian Centre of Excellence for Space Sciences and Technologies (SPACE-SI), is developing a 40 kg microsatellite for earth monitoring and observation that is capable of resolving a Ground Sampling Distance (GSD) of 2.8 m from a design altitude of 600 km. NEMO-HD (Nanosatellite for Earth Monitoring and Observation - High Definition) is the second spacecraft that is based on SFL's high-performance NEMO bus and builds upon the heritage of SFL's flight-proven Generic Nanosatellite Bus (GNB). NEMO-HD will carry two optical instruments: a …

System F6: Progress To Date, Elwin Ong, Owen Brown, Major John Losinski

Small Satellite Conference

The System F6 program has made progress over the past year, most notably with the F6 Developer’s Kit (FDK). The FDK will provide open source and freely exportable standards and software from the physical wireless link layer through to the network protocol stack, including real-time resource-sharing middleware and a cluster flight application. The program is on track to complete integration, verification and validation of the FDK and begin development of the F6 Technology Package (F6TP). The F6TP will instantiate the FDK in modular, reliable, and affordable flight hardware platforms that can be readily integrated onto a wide variety of spacecraft. …

The Micro-sized Microwave Atmospheric Satellite (MicroMAS) is a dual-spinning 3U CubeSat equipped with a passive microwave spectrometer that observes nine channels near the 118.75-GHz oxygen absorption line. The focus of this MicroMAS mission (hereafter, MicroMAS-1) is to observe convective thunderstorms, tropical cyclones, and hurricanes from a near-equatorial orbit. The MicroMAS-1 flight unit is currently being developed by MIT Lincoln Laboratory, the MIT Space Systems Laboratory, and the MIT Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences for a 2014 launch to be provided by the NASA CubeSat Launch Initiative program. As a low cost platform, MicroMAS offers the potential to deploy multiple …

Small Satellite Conference

Tohoku University is now developing an international scientific micro-satellite named RISESAT (Rapid International Scientific Experiment Satellite), whose launch is planned to be in the end of 2013. RISESAT is a 50-kg class micro-satellite. The orbit is planned to be a sun-synchronous orbit with an altitude of around 700km. RISESAT will carry 6 international scientific payloads developed by overseas partners, including a high-precision telescope with liquid crystal tunable filters with 5m GSD, as well as an optical communication terminal as technology demonstration. The total weight of payload instruments sums up to more than 10kg which is about 20 % of the …

Virus-Producing Cells Determine The Host Protein Profiles Of Hiv-1 Virion Cores, Steven Santos, Yuri Obukhov, Sergei Nekhai, Michael Bukrinsky, Sergey Iordanskiy

Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine Faculty Publications

Background

Upon HIV entry into target cells, viral cores are released and rearranged into reverse transcription complexes (RTCs), which support reverse transcription and also protect and transport viral cDNA to the site of integration. RTCs are composed of viral and cellular proteins that originate from both target and producer cells, the latter entering the target cell within the viral core. However, the proteome of HIV-1 viral cores in the context of the type of producer cells has not yet been characterized.

Results

We examined the proteomic profiles of the cores purified from HIV-1 NL4-3 virions assembled in Sup-T1 cells (T …

Just before the real estate crisis really hit, the Fed said that the issue was "contained." As we know, this was not correct. Recently, Bernanke said that the $1 Trillion in asset backed student loans won't cause a crisis. Hopefully he is right this time. See article here, Kansas City Star.
