A Decentralized Fault Detection And Prediction Scheme For Nonlinear Interconnected Continuous-Time Systems, Hasan Ferdowsi, Deepthi L. Raja, S. Jagannathan Aug 2012

A Decentralized Fault Detection And Prediction Scheme For Nonlinear Interconnected Continuous-Time Systems, Hasan Ferdowsi, Deepthi L. Raja, S. Jagannathan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Complex nonlinear systems such as an aircraft, trains, automobiles, power plants and chemical plants are represented as nonlinear interconnected subsystems. Therefore, in this paper a novel decentralized fault diagnosis and prognosis (FDP) methodology is proposed for such large-scale systems. Current FDP approaches require the knowledge of the entire state or its estimated vector. But the main goal in this work is to design a local fault detector (LFD) or observer for each subsystem based on the measured local states of the subsystem alone. a local residual signal is generated via the measured states of the local subsystem and the estimated …

The Digital Divide And Single-Gender Undergraduate Education In The Uae, Gilles Doiron Aug 2012

The Digital Divide And Single-Gender Undergraduate Education In The Uae, Gilles Doiron

All Works

Research on gender differences in perceived ICT competency, frequency of its use and attitudes over its value in higher education, while not conclusive, has indicated that males and females differ in areas of competency and frequency of use, and that females tend to feel more insecure than males in their perceived competency. However, since most of these studies were conducted in co-educational settings, single-gender tertiary education settings need to be explored for evidence of this "gender digital divide". Zayed University has campuses in both Abu Dhabi and the Dubai (United Arab Emirates), and is gender segregated for the undergraduate population. …

Oscillometric Measurement Of Systolic And Diastolic Blood Pressures Validated In A Physiologic Mathematical Model, Charles F. Babbs Aug 2012

Oscillometric Measurement Of Systolic And Diastolic Blood Pressures Validated In A Physiologic Mathematical Model, Charles F. Babbs

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

Background

The oscillometric method of measuring blood pressure with an automated cuff yields valid estimates of mean pressure but questionable estimates of systolic and diastolic pressures. Existing algorithms are sensitive to differences in pulse pressure and artery stiffness. Some are closely guarded trade secrets. Accurate extraction of systolic and diastolic pressures from the envelope of cuff pressure oscillations remains an open problem in biomedical engineering.

Methods

A new analysis of relevant anatomy, physiology and physics reveals the mechanisms underlying the production of cuff pressure oscillations as well as a way to extract systolic and diastolic pressures from the envelope of …

An Evaluation Of Rapid Response Team Impact, Jessylen Age Aug 2012

An Evaluation Of Rapid Response Team Impact, Jessylen Age

DNP and Student Works

Rapid response teams (RRTs) are widely implemented in hospitals today. Little research exists in the use of RRTs in the pediatric population (Chan et al., 2010; Pringle et al., 2011; Winberg et al., 2008). Regardless of these findings, children experiencing acute clinical deterioration receive highly specialized monitoring, equipment, medications and trained staff to manage the clinical instability.

This research using a retrospective, pre- and post-intervention, descriptive design determined the pediatric rapid response team (PRRT) role in reducing code events and mortality in pediatric patients outside the ICU in an academic setting. The number of pediatric code events and PRRT events …

Features Of Greek Satyr Play As A Guide To Interpretation For Plato's "Republic", Noel B. Reynolds Aug 2012

Features Of Greek Satyr Play As A Guide To Interpretation For Plato's "Republic", Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

The paper borrows from recent work by classicists on satyr play and demonstrates significant parallels between Plato’s Republic and the structure, theme, and stereotypical contents that characterize this newly studied genre of ancient Greek drama. Like satyr play, the Republic includes repeated passages where metatheatricality can reverse the meaning. The frequent occurrence of all the stereotypical elements of satyr play in Plato’s Republic also suggests to readers that they should be responding to Socrates’s narration as they would to a satyr play, again reversing meaning by communicating a set of literary expectations to Plato’s readers over the heads of Socrates’s …

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

Substantial uncertainties still exist in the scientific understanding of the possible interactions between urban and natural (biogenic) emissions in the production and transformation of atmospheric aerosol and the resulting impact on climate change. The US Department of Energy (DOE) Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) program's Carbonaceous Aerosol and Radiative Effects Study (CARES) carried out in June 2010 in Central Valley, California, was a comprehensive effort designed to improve this understanding. The primary objective of the field study was to investigate the evolution of secondary organic and black carbon aerosols and their climate-related properties in the Sacramento urban plume as it was …

Validation Of The Vivago Wrist-Worn Accelerometer In The Assessment Of Physical Activity, Jérémy Vanhelst, Rémy Hurdiel, Jacques Mikulovic, Gilles Bui-Xuân, Paul Fardy, Denis Theunynck, Laurent Béghin Aug 2012

Validation Of The Vivago Wrist-Worn Accelerometer In The Assessment Of Physical Activity, Jérémy Vanhelst, Rémy Hurdiel, Jacques Mikulovic, Gilles Bui-Xuân, Paul Fardy, Denis Theunynck, Laurent Béghin

Publications and Research

Background Most accelerometers are worn around the waist (hip or lower back) to assess habitual physical activity. Wrist-worn accelerometers may be an alternative to the waist-worn monitors and may improve compliance in studies with prolonged wear. The aim of this study was to validate the Vivago® Wrist-Worn Accelerometer at various intensities of physical activity (PA) in adults. Methods Twenty-one healthy adults aged 20–34 years were recruited for the study. Accelerometer data and oxygen uptake (VO2) were measured at sedentary, light, moderate and vigorous levels of PA. Results Activity categories and accelerometer counts were: sedentary, 0–15 counts·min−1; light, 16–40 counts·min−1; moderate, …

A Behavior-Analytic Approach To Behavioral Reflexivity, Dermot Barnes, Bryan Roche Aug 2012

A Behavior-Analytic Approach To Behavioral Reflexivity, Dermot Barnes, Bryan Roche

The Psychological Record

The purpose of this paper is to examine the issue of behavioral reflexivity from a behavior-analytic perspective. Two quotations from behavioral researchers are first considered, and both suggest that behavioral reflexivity is an issue best ignored. The nature of behavioral reflexivity is then examined, in detail, by dividing it into three basic assumptions. This examination suggests that behavioral reflexivity precludes the possibility of finding an ontological (correspondence-based) truth in behavior analysis, and therefore the ontological truth of behavioral reflexivity itself is undermined. If a pragmatic truth criterion is adopted, however, the truth of behavioral reflexivity must be defined in terms …

Some Reflections On Contextualism, Mechanism, And Behavior Analysis, Edward K. Morris Aug 2012

Some Reflections On Contextualism, Mechanism, And Behavior Analysis, Edward K. Morris

The Psychological Record

Recent conceptual work in behavior analysis has argued that the discipline is not mechanistic, but contextualistic, in world view. This argument has been contested, however, and a mechanism-contextualism debate has ensued. In taking the side of contextualism, I offer four reflections on the controversy. These concern (a) confusions concerning Pepper's purpose in writing his book and its place in the debate, (b) misunderstandings about the meanings of context and contextualism, (c) the pragmatic implications of theories of truth in world views other than contextualism, and (d) the evolution of ontology from mechanism to contextualism. In the end, behavior analysis may …
