Synthesis, Crystal Structure, And Rearrangements Of Ortho-Cyclophane Cyclotetraveratrylene (Cttv) Tetraketone, Marlon R. Lutz Jr., Matthias Zeller, Samuel R.S. Sarsah, Artur Filipowicz, Hailey Wouters, Daniel Becker Aug 2012

Synthesis, Crystal Structure, And Rearrangements Of Ortho-Cyclophane Cyclotetraveratrylene (Cttv) Tetraketone, Marlon R. Lutz Jr., Matthias Zeller, Samuel R.S. Sarsah, Artur Filipowicz, Hailey Wouters, Daniel Becker

Chemistry: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Oxidation of cyclotetraveratrylene (CTTV) with potassium permanganate in pyridine under reflux gave tetraketone (the [14]ketonand) 3 which exists as a previously unobserved barrel conformation with S4symmetry in the crystal structure, although the more familiar ‘boat’ conformer was shown by semi-empirical AM1 calculations to be 3.03 kcal/mol lower in energy. In addition to CTTV tetraketone 3, an isomeric bis-spirolactone 4 was isolated from the basic oxidation conditions, analogous to the product of trans-annular attack and rearrangement observed with oxidation of cyclotriveratrylene, whereas in acid at elevated temperatures, tetraketone 3 underwent a very efficient rearrangement and decarboxylation to afford the highly symmetric …

A Model Of Buyer-Supplier Relationships In A Transnational Company: The Role Of The Business Network Context, Matevž Rašković, Maja Makovec Brenčič, Jan C. Fransoo, Barbara Mörec Aug 2012

A Model Of Buyer-Supplier Relationships In A Transnational Company: The Role Of The Business Network Context, Matevž Rašković, Maja Makovec Brenčič, Jan C. Fransoo, Barbara Mörec

Economic and Business Review

The paradigmatic shift in marketing from the beginning of the 1990’s has transformed the study of economic exchange, towards addressing more the relational aspects of these exchanges, where relationship specificity has replaced transaction specificity. This is particularly true in transnational supply exchanges, where specialization and outsourcing have increased the importance of effective and efficient management of buyer-supplier relationships, and their corresponding networks in which they are embedded in. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the impact of selected dimensions of buyer-supplier relationships within a specific TNC business-to-business (B2B) setting on supply relationship performance from the suppliers’ perspective. The …

The 65 years of trials and tribulations, which Pakistan’s economy has faced, are a testament to its underlying resilience. The recent difficulties we have faced have led to memory lapses regarding the country’s historical economic performance. It is, therefore, imperative to survey the long and arduous journey of the economy since 1947.

At the time of independence, the prospects of the economic survival of a ramped Pakistan appeared quite dim. The following extract from the cover story of LIFE magazine dated January 5, 1948, is reflective of the sentiments about Pakistan’s economic future at the time.

Women And Wasta: The Use Of Focus Groups For Understanding Social Capital And Middle Eastern Women, Deborah C. Bailey Aug 2012

Women And Wasta: The Use Of Focus Groups For Understanding Social Capital And Middle Eastern Women, Deborah C. Bailey

The Qualitative Report

Social capital is the use of informal networking to secure access to resources and opportunities. Often identified as an asset for offsetting deficiencies in societies, research on the phenomena is limited. This paper describes a qualitative study using focus groups with young adult Emeriti women representing three social-economic groups who were interviewed by the author in order to explore the topic of social capital, specifically a form of social capital defined by the Arabic term “wasta”. The women discussed their experiences of how wasta persists regardless of social and religious laws forbidding its practice and how they might use it …

“The Road Not Taken” – Israeli Teachers’ Reactions To Top-Down Educational Reform, Roxana G. Reichman, Shlomit Artzi Aug 2012

“The Road Not Taken” – Israeli Teachers’ Reactions To Top-Down Educational Reform, Roxana G. Reichman, Shlomit Artzi

The Qualitative Report

The authors have investigated teachers’ reactions towards an imposed reform initiated by the Israeli Ministry of Education in collaboration with one of two teachers’ unions based on the messages and letters sent by high school teachers to an internet forum during a teachers’ strike which took place between October and December of 2007. This study is the result of collaborative work between a teacher educator and a veteran teacher studying towards her Master of Education degree in Learning and Instruction. The research question was: What were the teachers’ attitudes regarding the “New Horizon” reform as conveyed on an internet forum …

Adding Autonomic Healing Capabilities To Polyethylene Oxide, Dorina M. Chipara, Maritza Flores, Alma Perez, Nancy Puente, Karen Lozano, Mircea Chipara Aug 2012

Adding Autonomic Healing Capabilities To Polyethylene Oxide, Dorina M. Chipara, Maritza Flores, Alma Perez, Nancy Puente, Karen Lozano, Mircea Chipara

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The addition of autonomic healing (frequently defined as self-healing) capabilities to a water-soluble polymer (polyethylene oxide, PEO) is for the first time reported. The self-healing system consists of urea-formaldehyde microcapsules filled with dicyclopentadiene and first-generation Grubbs catalyst, dispersed within polyethylene oxide. Raman spectroscopy, optical microscopy, electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis were used to characterize this autonomic healing system. Self-healing capabilities were confirmed by mechanical testing (load–displacement, engineering stress–engineering strain, and true stress–true strain dependences) recorded at very slow elongation rates (0.01 mm/s). The testing fate was chosen to allow for the complete consumption of the monomer before fracture (the polymerization …

Subpixel Temperature Estimation From Single-Band Thermal Infrared Imagery, Sarah Paul Aug 2012

Subpixel Temperature Estimation From Single-Band Thermal Infrared Imagery, Sarah Paul

Theses

Target temperature estimation from thermal infrared (TIR) imagery is a complex task that becomes increasingly more difficult as the target size approaches the size of a projected pixel. At that point the assumption of pixel homogeneity is invalid as the radiance value recorded at the sensor is the result of energy contributions from the target material and any other background material that falls within a pixel boundary. More often than not, thermal infrared pixels are heterogeneous and therefore subpixel temperature extraction becomes an important capability. Typical subpixel estimation approaches make use of multispectral or hyperspectral sensors. These technologies are expensive …

Video Game Huds: Information Presentation And Spatial Immersion, James Babu Aug 2012

Video Game Huds: Information Presentation And Spatial Immersion, James Babu

Theses

Researchers have analyzed various aspects of the video game experience; however, analysis of how the presentation of game status information affects the player's sense of immersion into the virtual environment has not been explored. This study aims to discover how feelings of immersion are affected by diegetic, or environmentally based, methods of presenting the player's status versus non-diegetic methods. Avid gamers were told to play two games, one diegetic based interface and the other a non-diegetic interface, to see how their spatial immersion experiences differed between the two designs. In addition to the use of questionnaires to evaluate the level …

Will Venezuela's Petro-Diplomacy Survive?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor Aug 2012

Will Venezuela's Petro-Diplomacy Survive?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports

Henrique Capriles, the Venezuelan opposition leader running for president against Hugo Chávez, said on Aug. 1 that he would scrap preferential oil deals with foreign allies including Argentina, Cuba and others, Reuters reported. Capriles said the country would save $6.7 billion annually under his plan, money that he would use for domestic social spending. Meanwhile, state-run oil company PDVSA reportedly will need to set aside between $4 billion and $7 billion annually for the next five years to make payments on its heavy debt burden, analysts have forecast. Has Venezuela's petro-diplomacy run the end of its course? Which countries would …

Why Bank Market Value To Book Value Ratios So Different: Evidence From Turkish Banking Sector, Fatih Macit, Zeynep Topaloglu Aug 2012

Why Bank Market Value To Book Value Ratios So Different: Evidence From Turkish Banking Sector, Fatih Macit, Zeynep Topaloglu

Economic and Business Review

In this paper we examine the market value to book value ratios for publicly traded banks in Turkish banking sector and investigate whether the bank fundamentals could explain the observed differences among the banks. We find that bank fundamentals play a significant role in explaining the differences in market value to book value ratios. The results reveal that banks with higher profitability and a higher ratio of non-interest revenue to total interest revenue tend to have higher market value to book value ratios. Banks with higher net loans to total assets ratio, a larger asset size, and a higher equity …

The Impact Of Knowledge Management On Organisational Performance, Jelena Rašula, Vesna Bosilj Vukšić, Mojca Indihar Štemberger

Economic and Business Review

Knowledge management is a process that transforms individual knowledge into organisational knowledge. The aim of this paper is to show that through creating, accumulating, organising and utilising knowledge, organisations can enhance organisational performance. The impact of knowledge management practices on performance was empirically tested through structural equation modelling. The sample included 329 companies both in Slovenia and Croatia with more than 50 employees. The results show that knowledge management constructs (i.e. information technology, organisation and knowledge) positively affect organisational performance.

Exploring Moderating Effects Of Proactivity On The Relationship Between Market Information And Innovation Performance, Branka Ahlin, Mateja Drnovšek, Robert D. Hisrich

Economic and Business Review

The purpose of this study is to test relationship between entrepreneur’s proactivity and effectiveness of market information use to address the question of why some entrepreneurs use market information better than others. Results of our conceptual model, tested on SMEs from the United States and Slovenia, indicate that entrepreneurs who are more proactive are more responsive to new information than others; which has a positive influence on SMEs innovation performance, product innovation in specifics. Implications for practitioners and future research avenues are discussed.

Cold Case Homicides: An Examination Of Clearance Factors, Matthew M. Lunn Aug 2012

Cold Case Homicides: An Examination Of Clearance Factors, Matthew M. Lunn

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The killing of one individual by another is something in our culture that garners a lot of attention from the media as well as community leaders. Law enforcement agencies have a duty to find resolution to these crimes. Yet, even with the rapid growth of forensics and the technology associated with it, there are still cases that go unsolved. These cases are commonly referred to as cold case homicides. In order to evaluate whether forensic evidence or investigative technique plays a larger role in the clearance of cold case homicides, a retrospective study was conducted to examine previously solved cold …

Sex In Rotrou’S Theater: Performance And Disorder, Nina Ekstein Aug 2012

Sex In Rotrou’S Theater: Performance And Disorder, Nina Ekstein

Modern Languages and Literatures Faculty Research

Sexual desire is ubiquitous in all theater. It follows that virtually all theatrical traditions struggle with the issue of the representation of that desire onstage. The French stage of the 1630s and Jean Rotrou's theater of that period in particular constitute an unusual moment of relative freedom before the imposition of the bienséances banished sexual activity from the stage. What I propose is a theatrical reading of sex in Rotrou's plays, a tripartite examination of dramatic strategy: how Rotrou foregrounds the scandalous by direct depiction of sexuality onstage; how at other moments he moves to attenuate its prurient force by …
