The Effect Of Presumed Media Influence On College Athletes, Justin E. Anderson
The Effect Of Presumed Media Influence On College Athletes, Justin E. Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
In this article, I examine the notion that perceptions of media have a perceived effect on performance and morale on both the athlete and the team. I test this idea on a sample of college athletes at Nicholls State University (N=94), at the end of the 2011-2012 school year. Findings show that the presumed media influence is displayed in the context of athletics and that there are some indirect effects from one's perceptions of how their teammates were portrayed in the media. Research found that positive media had a perceived effect on the team but not on ones' self. Findings …
Assembly, Annotation, And Polymorphic Characterization Of The Erysiphe Necator Transcriptome, Jason Myers
Assembly, Annotation, And Polymorphic Characterization Of The Erysiphe Necator Transcriptome, Jason Myers
Theses
The objectives of this study were to develop a transcriptomic reference resource and to characterize polymorphism between isolates of Erysiphe necator (syn. Uncinula necator), grape powdery mildew. The wine and fresh fruit markets are economically vital to many countries worldwide, and E. necator infection can cause severe crop damage and subsequent financial loss. Most of the publicly available sequence data for Erysiphales are from research done on Blumeria graminis f. sp. hordei, barley powdery mildew, which occupies a distinct clade within the Erysiphales. We obtained 641,601 sequencing reads from a Roche 454–FLX next–generation sequencer (RNA–Seq) and performed multiple assemblies using …

Book Review: Student Financial Literacy: Campus-Based Program Development, David R. Smedley
Journal of Student Financial Aid
Published in 2012, Dorothy B. Durband (Texas Tech University) and Sonya L. Britt (Kansas State University) present in their new edited volume, Student Financial Literacy: Campus-Based Program Development, a wide range of perspectives on how to implement successful financial literacy programs on college campuses. This could not be a timelier book, particularly in light of recent statutory efforts to improve “program integrity” through additional consumer disclosures, along with the creation of college costs “watch lists” and “net price calculators.” Despite these national efforts, many students and families may still be unaware about the financial costs of postsecondary education, have limited …
An Experimental Comparison Between Terror Management Theory And Coalitional Psychology Theory, Carlos Torres
An Experimental Comparison Between Terror Management Theory And Coalitional Psychology Theory, Carlos Torres
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This study tested the competing predictions made by both Terror Management Theory and coalitional psychology regarding the effects of mortality-salience primes by inspecting the effects mortality-salience primes had on shifting how participants valued personal possessions. The hypotheses of this study were: If Terror Management Theory was correct, only after completing the mortality-salience prime would participants value personal possessions for their symbolically expressive connecting properties, and if coalitional psychology was correct then completing either the mortality-salience of theft-salience primes would result in participants valuing personal possessions for their instrumental status and group membership functions. Possession functions were measured using the Possession …

Online social networking sites membership and usage is growing around the world, breaking the borders among the countries and becoming a global phenomenon. Individuals with common interests, from different social groups such as family, school and friendship are now able to be connected to each other via this computer mediated interaction channel. Facebook is one of the most popular sites. The exponential growth in their user base makes it important to investigate a better understanding on factors contributing in intention to use these websites and continue the usage. In this paper we try to examine some factors affecting users’ continuance …
Structural Dynamic Modification Of Vibrating Structures Using Topology Optimization / Sajjad Zargham, Zargham Sajjad
Structural Dynamic Modification Of Vibrating Structures Using Topology Optimization / Sajjad Zargham, Zargham Sajjad
Student Works (2010-2019)
This thesis presents a structural dynamic modification of vibrating structures by using topology optimization method in order to find the most effective design of a structure supporting rotating machinery. Modal testing and operating deflection shape (ODS) measurement were applied to identify the dynamic characteristics of a pedestal structure. The dynamic characteristics of the structure were ascertained to validate the finite element model. Then, topology optimization method was used to determine the optimum design of the structure. Results from modal testing showed that the structure has two natural frequencies at 12.1 Hz (left to right bending), and 16.7 Hz (rear to …

Farnesol And Cyclic Amp Signaling Effects On The Hypha-To-Yeast Transition In Candida Albicans, Allia K. Lindsay, Aurélie Deveau, Amy E. Piispanen, Deborah A. Hogan
Farnesol And Cyclic Amp Signaling Effects On The Hypha-To-Yeast Transition In Candida Albicans, Allia K. Lindsay, Aurélie Deveau, Amy E. Piispanen, Deborah A. Hogan
Dartmouth Scholarship
Candida albicans, a fungal pathogen of humans, regulates its morphology in response to many environmental cues and this morphological plasticity contributes to virulence. Farnesol, an autoregulatory molecule produced by C. albicans, inhibits the induction of hyphal growth by inhibiting adenylate cyclase (Cyr1). The role of farnesol and Cyr1 in controlling the maintenance of hyphal growth has been less clear. Here, we demonstrate that preformed hyphae transition to growth as yeast in response to farnesol and that strains with increased cyclic AMP (cAMP) signaling exhibit more resistance to farnesol. Exogenous farnesol did not induce the hypha-to-yeast transition in mutants …
Essays In Inflation And Monetary Dynamics In Developing Countries, Simon K. Harvey
Essays In Inflation And Monetary Dynamics In Developing Countries, Simon K. Harvey
College of Business: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This dissertation is consists of three essays. In the first essay, I analyze how the information contained in the disaggregate components of aggregate inflation helps improve the forecasts of the aggregate series using inflation data from Ghana. Direct univariate forecasting of the aggregate inflation data by an autoregressive (AR) model is used as the benchmark with which all autoregressive (AR), moving average (MA) and vector autoregressive (VAR) models of the disaggregates are compared. The results show that directly forecasting the aggregate series from the benchmark model is generally superior to aggregating forecasts from the disaggregate components. Additionally, including information from …

A Comparison Of Methods For Measuring Co2 And O2, Jake Nelson
A Comparison Of Methods For Measuring Co2 And O2, Jake Nelson
Techniques and Instruments
Understanding the dynamics of respiratory gasses gives critical insight into the metabolic processes of a biological system. An efficient and effective means of measuring respiration is essential to understanding aspects of the biosphere. Many methods have been developed for measuring changes in CO2 and O2, both as integrated systems and as individual components. Many experiments use an alkali trap with subsequent titration as an inexpensive method for CO2 measurement. Haney et al. (2008) compared the titration method against infrared gas analysis (IRGA) and found them to be highly correlated, with r2=0.95. The use of …

Competition And Price Wars In The U.S. Brewing Industry, Jayendra Gokhale, Victor J. Tremblay
Competition And Price Wars In The U.S. Brewing Industry, Jayendra Gokhale, Victor J. Tremblay
Accounting, Economics, Finance, and Information Sciences - Daytona Beach
The behavior of the macro or mass-production segment of the U.S. brewing industry appears to be paradoxical. Since the end of Prohibition in 1934, the number of independent brewer has continuously declined while the major national brewers, such as Anheuser-Busch, Miller, and Coors, have gained market share. In spite of this decline in the number of competitors, profits and market power have remained low in brewing. Iwasaki et al. (2008) explain this result by providing evidence that changes in marketing and production technologies favored larger brewers and forced the industry into a war of attrition, in which only a handful …

Background: Streptococcus pneumoniae is a leading cause of invasive bacterial disease in developed and developing countries. We studied the loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) technique to assess its suitability for detecting S. pneumoniae nucleic acid in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).
Methodology/Principal Findings: We established an improved LAMP assay targeting the lytA gene (Streptococcus pneumoniae [Sp] LAMP). The analytical specificity of the primers was validated by using 32 reference strains (10 Streptococcus and seven non-Streptococcus species) plus 25 clinical alpha-hemolytic streptococcal strains, including four S. pneumoniae strains and 21 other strains (3 S. oralis, 17 S. mitis, and …
Betwixt And Between Past And Present: Cultural And Generic Hybridity In The Fiction Of Mary Yukari Waters, Rania Samir Youssef
Betwixt And Between Past And Present: Cultural And Generic Hybridity In The Fiction Of Mary Yukari Waters, Rania Samir Youssef
Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies
The cosmopolitan make-up of the American society has yielded cultural hybrid offspring and this cultural hybridity features strongly in contemporary American fiction. Amy Tan and Mary Yukari Waters are both Asian-Americans who portray such hybridity in their short stories which depict the shifting identities of the self. But do the internal categories of gender, race and ethnicity help in the coherence or do they add to the fragmentation of diverse identities? It is the dynamics of this critique of multiple identification and hybrid cultures that is being traced here in this study and how all this is reflected in narrative …

The Crispr/Cas Adaptive Immune System Of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Mediates Resistance To Naturally Occurring And Engineered Phages, Kyle C. Cady, Joe Bondy-Denomy, Gary E. Heussler, Alan R. Davidson, George A. O'Toole
Dartmouth Scholarship
Here we report the isolation of 6 temperate bacteriophages (phages) that are prevented from replicating within the laboratory strain Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA14 by the endogenous CRISPR/Cas system of this microbe. These phages are only the second identified group of naturally occurring phages demonstrated to be blocked for replication by a nonengineered CRISPR/Cas system, and our results provide the first evidence that the P. aeruginosa type I-F CRISPR/Cas system can function in phage resistance. Previous studies have highlighted the importance of the protospacer adjacent motif (PAM) and a proximal 8-nucleotide seed sequence in mediating CRISPR/Cas-based immunity. Through engineering of a protospacer …
Low-Income Engineering Students: Considering Financial Aid And Differential Tuition, Casey E. George-Jackson, Blanca Rincon, Mariana G. Martinez
Low-Income Engineering Students: Considering Financial Aid And Differential Tuition, Casey E. George-Jackson, Blanca Rincon, Mariana G. Martinez
Journal of Student Financial Aid
This paper explores the relationship between tuition differentials and low-income students in Engineering fields at two public, research intensive universities. Although current reports indicate the need for increased participation within the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields, rising tuition prices at the university and program levels may deter low-income students to enroll and persist within STEM, specifically Engineering. The findings reveal that increased costs due to tuition differentials policies are initially offset by financial aid, but over time costs increase, particularly for low-income students. The results highlight the need for comprehensive, time-sensitive financial aid packages that provide students opportunities …
Should I Work Or Should I Borrow? Counterfactual Analysis On The Effect Of Working While Enrolled And Debt On Baccalaureate Completion, Pilar Mendoza
Should I Work Or Should I Borrow? Counterfactual Analysis On The Effect Of Working While Enrolled And Debt On Baccalaureate Completion, Pilar Mendoza
Journal of Student Financial Aid
Using the 2007-2008 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study, this study tested positively the hypothesis that college students are either likely to acquire debt above the national median or work more than 30 hours a week in order to graduate from a four year degree within six years. These results resonate with the theory of academic capitalism, in which higher education has become a private good that students have to purchase despite governmental programs to provide students with financial aid in the form of grants. This finding has important implications for college affordability.
Biochemical Evaluation Of Srh Analogs As Potential Luxs Inhibitors, Richa Gupta
Biochemical Evaluation Of Srh Analogs As Potential Luxs Inhibitors, Richa Gupta
Master's Theses
Quorum sensing in bacteria is a process of cell-to-cell communication facilitated by small molecules called autoinducers. Interspecies quorum sensing is facilitated by the autoinducer AI-2. The enzyme LuxS catalyzes the formation of AI-2 from S-ribosyl homocysteine (SRH) in a wide variety of bacterial species. Inhibition of LuxS would therefore inhibit interspecies quorum sensing. The goal of this project is to establish biochemical assays for the evaluation of small molecules as potential LuxS inhibitors. The first assay is a conventional colorimetric assay that utilizes Ellman’s reagent to quantify the homocysteine byproduct of DPD production by LuxS. For this assay purified …
Modeling Of Power Semiconductor Devices, Tanya Kirilova Gachovska
Modeling Of Power Semiconductor Devices, Tanya Kirilova Gachovska
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
One of the requirements for choosing a proper power electronic device for a converter is that it must possess a low specific on-resistance. The specific on-resistance of a bipolar device is related to the base width and doping concentration of the lightly doped drift region. This means that the doping concentration and the width of the low-doped base region in a bipolar device must be carefully considered to achieve a desired avalanche breakdown voltage and on-resistance. In order to determine the technological parameters of a semiconductor device, a one dimensional analysis is used to calculate the minimum depletion layer width, …
Layer Parallel Shortening: A Mechanism Used To Determine The Sequence Of Deformation Of The Little Water Syncline In The Tendoy Mountains, Southwestern Montana., Kera Ann Judy
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The Little Water syncline is a complex structural feature within the Tendoy thrust sheet which formed during two temporally overlapping deformational episodes during the Late Cretaceous. The NNW-trending Four Eyes Canyon thrust and the structurally lower Tendoy thrust are associated with NE-SW-shortening related to the Cordilleran (Sevier-style) fold-thrust belt. The Tendoy thrust forms the structural front of the Cordilleran fold-thrust belt in southwestern Montana and its detached, NNW-trending overturned limb (of the Little Water syncline) was over-ridden by the Four Eyes Canyon thrust. Earlier research primarily used stratigraphic evidence coupled with geometric interpretations to suggest that: 1) clasts found in …
Analysis Of Microbial Diversity By Amplicon Pyrosequencing, Ryan Legge
Analysis Of Microbial Diversity By Amplicon Pyrosequencing, Ryan Legge
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Microorganisms numerically dominate terrestrial biodiversity, and play important biochemical and geochemical roles in the environments they inhabit. To understand structure and function of complex ecosystems, it is essential to identify primary drivers of microbial diversity and community structure. Historically, the study of microbial ecology was reductive, limited to microbes able to be cultured and enumerated. Microbes meeting this criterion were thought to comprise the dominating members of the environments they were isolated from, however, estimates suggesting up to 99% of the endogenous species are uncultivable with existing methodologies; a concept that reflects experimental failure, rather than a verifiable conclusion. Therefore …
