Psychological Health Of First-Year Health Professional Students In A Medical University In The United Arab Emirates, Kadayam G. Gomathi, Soofia Ahmed, Jayadevan

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess the psychological health of first-year health professional students and to study sources of student stress. Methods: All first-year students (N = 125) of the Gulf Medical University (GMU) in Ajman, United Arab Emirates (UAE), were invited to participate in a voluntary, anonymous, self-administered, questionnaire-based survey in January 2011. Psychological health was assessed using the 12-item General Health Questionnaire. A 24-item questionnaire, with items related to academic, psychosocial and health domains was used to identify sources of stress. Pearson’s chi-squared test and the Mann-Whitney U-test were used for testing the association between …

Framework For Formative Assessment Learning Strategies In Built Environment Higher Education Programmes, Lloyd Scott, Christopher Fortune Sep 2012

Framework For Formative Assessment Learning Strategies In Built Environment Higher Education Programmes, Lloyd Scott, Christopher Fortune

Conference papers

Formative assessment has begun to be recognized as a driving force for enhancing student learning. This paper addresses the context of Built Environment (BE) undergraduate programmes and the findings from a research project in the context of the changing Higher Education (HE) environment. The analysis of the literature on formative assessment shows that there is a common concern among the educational researchers about the function and position of assessment in HE today. The overall aim of this research is to contribute to an improvement in the quality of student learning in BE undergraduate education through the development of a theoretical …

Improvement Of Near-Infrared Absorption Linewidth In Algan/Gan Superlattices By Optimization Of Delta-Doping Location, C. Edmunds, L. Tang, J. Shao, D. Li, M. Cervantes, G. Gardner, Dmitri Zakharov, Michael J. Manfra, O. Malis Sep 2012

Improvement Of Near-Infrared Absorption Linewidth In Algan/Gan Superlattices By Optimization Of Delta-Doping Location, C. Edmunds, L. Tang, J. Shao, D. Li, M. Cervantes, G. Gardner, Dmitri Zakharov, Michael J. Manfra, O. Malis

Birck and NCN Publications

We report a systematic study of the near-infrared intersubband absorption in AlGaN/GaN superlattices grown by plasma-assisted molecular-beam epitaxy as a function of Si-doping profile with and without delta-doping. The transition energies are in agreement with theoretical calculations including many-body effects. A dramatic reduction of the intersubband absorption linewidth is observed when the delta-doping is placed at the end of the quantum well. This reduction is attributed to the improvement of interface roughness. The linewidth dependence on interface roughness is well reproduced by a model that considers the distribution of well widths measured with transmission electron microscopy. Situated Peer Coaching And Unfolding Cases In The Fundamentals Skills Laboratory, Deborah O. Himes, Patricia K. Ravert Sep 2012

Situated Peer Coaching And Unfolding Cases In The Fundamentals Skills Laboratory, Deborah O. Himes, Patricia K. Ravert

Faculty Publications

Using unfolding case studies and situated peer coaching for the Fundamentals Skills Laboratory provides students with individualized feedback and creates a realistic clinical learning experience. A quasi-experimental design with pre- and post-intervention data was used to evaluate changes in student ratings of the course. An instrument was used to examine students' self-ratings and student comments about each lab. We found that students' ratings of the lab remained high with the new method and self-evaluations of their performance were higher as the semester progressed. Students appreciated the personalized feedback associated with peer coaching and demonstrated strong motivation and self-regulation in learning. …

Feasibility Study On Implementation Of Medium Temperature Solar Thermal Energy In Industrial Processes: A Case Study In Malaysia / Chin Chuan Kong, Chuan Kong Chin Sep 2012

Feasibility Study On Implementation Of Medium Temperature Solar Thermal Energy In Industrial Processes: A Case Study In Malaysia / Chin Chuan Kong, Chuan Kong Chin

Student Works (2010-2019)

A case study on the feasibility of implementing medium temperature solar thermal energy in industrial processes in Malaysia is conducted. The objective is to determine if it is technically and economically viable to utilize the solar thermal renewable energy at a temperature range of 80-250°C as a substitute to conventional means of generating thermal energy. Solar energy is the source of most other renewable energies, and Malaysia being situated at the equator makes us geographically favorable to harness this free energy. Almost half of the industrial processes use thermal energy rather than electrical energy, and the output of a solar …

Defining The Role Of Ultrasound In Drug Delivery, William G. Pitt Sep 2012

Defining The Role Of Ultrasound In Drug Delivery, William G. Pitt

Faculty Publications

Ultrasound is a very effective modality for drug delivery because energy that is noninvasively transmitted through the skin can be focused on a specific location and employed to release drug at that site. Most of the drug delivery techniques employ one or both of the results of ultrasonic insonation – the generation of thermal energy, called hyperthermia, or the oscillation of gas bubbles, called acoustic cavitation. Cavitation perturbs cell membrane structures via several modes and increases the permeability to drugs or other solutes. Microconvection, caused by stable cavitation, shears cell membranes. The shock waves and fluid jets of inertial cavitation …
