Central Place Theory And City Size Distribution, Wen-Tai Hsu Sep 2012

Central Place Theory And City Size Distribution, Wen-Tai Hsu

Research Collection School Of Economics

This paper proposes a theory of city size distribution via a hierarchy approach rather than the popular random growth process. It does so by formalizing central place theory using an equilibrium entry model and specifying the conditions under which city size distribution follows a power law. Central place theory describes the way in which a hierarchical city system with different layers of cities serving differently sized market areas is formed from a uniformly populated space. The force driving the city size differences in this model is the heterogeneity in economies of scale across goods. The city size distribution under a …

The New Stigma Of Relocated Public Housing Residents: Challenges To Social Identity In Mixed-Income Developments, Mark L. Joseph Sep 2012

The New Stigma Of Relocated Public Housing Residents: Challenges To Social Identity In Mixed-Income Developments, Mark L. Joseph

Faculty Scholarship

Public housing residents have long experienced stigma as members of an urban “underclass.” One policy response is the creation of mixed-income developments; by deconcentrating poverty and integrating residents into communities in which their residences are indistinguishable from neighbors, such efforts might reduce stigma associated with residency in traditional public housing. Through in-depth interviews with 35 relocated public housing residents and 184 field observations at three mixed-income developments in Chicago, we find this is not the case. Stigma associated with living in public housing is ameliorated, yet residents report that their experience of stigma has intensified in other ways. The negative …

Student Research and Creative Projects 2012-2013

“Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder affecting approximately 1% of elderly Americans that results from progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons. Common motor symptoms of PD include resting tremor, rigidity, bradykinesia or akinesia and postural instability” (Zesiewicz et al., 2009). “Almost all patients with PD have non-motor and neuropsychiatric features, including sleep disturbances, compulsive and impulsive behaviors, autonomic dysfunction and psychosis” (Fernandez, 2012). In the years to come, as the average age increases the amount of PD patients will also increase due to the late onset of most PD cases. As the amount of PD cases caused by environmental factors …

Prolonging The Structural Integrity Of Poly-Lactic Acid Based Composites, Zachary Block, Maryam Grami

Student Research and Creative Projects 2012-2013

The scope of this research is to evaluate the effect oil based polyurethane has on Poly-Lactic Acid (PLA) when used as thin protective film against degradation, and how PLA performs when used as matrix material in a natural fiber composite. Course woven jute fabric (burlap) is being used as natural fiber reinforcement. PLA is synthesized from corn starch which makes the polymer biodegradable, but the amount of degradation is dependent on the conditions the material is subjected to. Panels of plain PLA and PLA reinforced with burlap were prepared through the use of a hot press and steel die. The …

Female Neutrophils Produce Less Neutrophil Extracellular Traps In Response To The Escherichia Coli Hemolysin Than Male Neutrophils, Melissa Brown, Nicole Aulik Sep 2012

Female Neutrophils Produce Less Neutrophil Extracellular Traps In Response To The Escherichia Coli Hemolysin Than Male Neutrophils, Melissa Brown, Nicole Aulik

Student Research and Creative Projects 2012-2013

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) have been estimated to cost the U.S. approximately 1.6 billion dollars in health care costs. The majority of UTIs affect women more than men where fifty to sixty percent of women will experience a UTI in their lifetime. Uropathogenic Escherichia coli is the leading cause of UTIs. When uropathogenic E. coli is incubated in human urine, E. coli produce significantly more of the hemolysin, an RTX toxin that can lyse a wide variety of cell types. Up regulation of the hemolysin is believed to be important in E. coli colonization of bladder and kidney epithelial cells. …

Determining The Correlation Between Helminth Parasite Prevalence In Wisconsin Felis Rufus Populations, Heather Gakev, Sara Eberhardt, Shalin Ranjitkar, Amber Schultze

Student Research and Creative Projects 2012-2013

Felis rufus (bobcat) populations are declining throughout some of their range in Wisconsin, while expanding in others (Personal Communication, WI DNR)1. Many theories exist as to why this is happening, including the possibility of disease. Our lab wanted to determine the helminth parasite population prevalence and intensity in Wisconsin bobcat and determine if there was a correlation with sex, age or geographic location of these animals. One hundred and fifteen bobcat intestines were collected March 5, 2012 at a Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Facility, Madison, WI. These animals were legally harvested by trapping/hunting and the carcasses were made available …

Development And Testing Of Rugged And Portable Soil Gas Sampling Chamber, Katie Hamerly, Mark Engen

Student Research and Creative Projects 2012-2013

Soil emission rates of the greenhouse gas: carbon dioxide (CO2) have been investigated using a new and simpler gas sampling chamber. It is important to formulate a standardized sampling method, including a sample collection container so that the data obtained can be reliably compared with and added to a multitude of measurements made in ecosystems around the world. The primary goal of this research is to determine if the new sampling system gives statically equivalent results to the proven sampling method already employed. The carbon dioxide flux rate determination based on the new sampling unit was calculated to be 0.67 …

A Ketamine Model Of Schizophrenia, Gareth Harman, Richard Deyo Sep 2012

A Ketamine Model Of Schizophrenia, Gareth Harman, Richard Deyo

Student Research and Creative Projects 2012-2013

Schizophrenia is a pervasive mental disorder than greatly reduces the quality of life of the sufferers. Ketamine is an anesthetic and a NMDA receptor antagonist. The “high” from abusing ketamine results in a dissociative state that closely resembles many of the symptoms of schizophrenia. Many researchers are using ketamine to “induce” the behavioral symptoms of schizophrenia in order to better study the disease. Through this research I am attempting to validate whether the ketamine model of schizophrenia also models the neurochemistry of the disorder that is critical for use in the development of new drug interventions. Recently scientists have discovered …

Neuroendocrine And Behavioral Responses To Stress In Hypothyroidism, Gabrielle Hayden, Richard Deyo Sep 2012

Neuroendocrine And Behavioral Responses To Stress In Hypothyroidism, Gabrielle Hayden, Richard Deyo

Student Research and Creative Projects 2012-2013

A positive relationship has been discovered linking heightened ACTH levels in the pituitary to increased hypothyroidism rates, suggesting that stress negatively impacts thyroid functioning. Hypothyroidism is frequently misdiagnosed and treated as depression, yet little is known about this relationship. Nine C57BL/6J subjects were given 0.25% 6-propyl-2-thiouracil per gram for two weeks and twenty-nine were kept on a standard laboratory diet prior to tail suspension testing. The control group was further divided into six-day, single day, and no tail suspension testing. Following the final trail all groups were scored behaviorally in on the open field test. Serum samples were then acquired …

Characterization Of Alternative Grains Used In The Brewing Process And Analysis Of Product Parameters, Grant Newton, Francis Mann

Student Research and Creative Projects 2012-2013

In recent months, an interest has arose in whether or not gluten free beers due in fact have gluten in them. During the first part of my research, a few gluten free beers were tested using an ELIZA (EZ Gluten) test to determine if there was any gluten in the beer (this test would be used later on the grains). The results showed that the gluten free beers did in fact not have gluten in them. After testing the beers, I will utilize alternate grains (sorghum, rice, corn, quinoa) to determine if any gluten is extracted during the fermentation process. …

Parallels Between Down Syndrome And Alzheimer's Disease, Maria Noterman, Richard Deyo Sep 2012

Parallels Between Down Syndrome And Alzheimer's Disease, Maria Noterman, Richard Deyo

Student Research and Creative Projects 2012-2013

Down syndrome is caused by trisomy of human chromosome 21 (Hsa21) and often leads to Alzheimer’s disease in affected individuals. The Tc1 mouse model contains a copy of Hsa21 in its genome, and is therefore trisomic for the genes it contains to manifest as a Down syndrome mouse model. Transmission of Hsa21 to offspring generations occurs at a low frequency with fertility rates decreased in comparison to control mouse lines. This experiment has verified that presence of Hsa21 causes a significant increase from normal brain weight. Hsa21 carriers demonstrated reductions in the number and length of dendritic projections and the …

Phylogeography Of Southern Red-Backed Voles In North America, Kelly Novak, Amy Runck

Student Research and Creative Projects 2012-2013

Climate change has altered species distributions and has lead to species forming as they I ive in isolated refugia. I propose to examine microsatl I ite alleles from the southern red-backed vole (Myodes gapperi) in order to test whether or not previously identified distinct I ineages of these voles can interbreed. If they are no longer interbreeding, this wi I I give us insight on how climate change can affect species distributions and contribute to speciation.
