CASE DESCRIPTION: This short case focuses on harassment and intimidation problems faced by a manager and his family shortly after an employee has been terminated. Whether the departed employee is the intimidator, whether the employer is obligated to investigate and get involved in the matter, and which options or possible actions the manager and his family can take are the key issues in the case. The case has a difficulty level of four, and is best-suited for use in junior or senior undergraduate-level courses in human resource management or employment law. This case can be presented and discussed in about …

Nutritional Ecology Of Moose In An Urban Landscape, Joseph H. Welch Aug 2012

Nutritional Ecology Of Moose In An Urban Landscape, Joseph H. Welch

Biological Sciences

Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER), Alaska supports a large population of moose that lives in and around the urban and industrial development of Anchorage. This study evaluates the body condition of adult female moose on JBER and calculates the relative nutritional value of habitat for planning development and for mitigating the effects of development on this population. Body condition of moose on JBER was similar to that of other populations of moose in Alaska. Our nutritional model predicted that shrublands could support 11-81 times more moose than any other habitat on JBER. Activity patterns of JBER moose were similar to those …

Controls On Ecosystem Respiration Of Carbon Dioxide Across A Boreal Wetland Gradient In Interior Alaska, Nicole A. Mcconnell Aug 2012

Controls On Ecosystem Respiration Of Carbon Dioxide Across A Boreal Wetland Gradient In Interior Alaska, Nicole A. Mcconnell

Biological Sciences

Permafrost and organic soil layers are common to most wetlands in interior Alaska, where wetlands have functioned as important long-term soil carbon sinks. Boreal wetlands are diverse in both vegetation and nutrient cycling, ranging from nutrient-poor bogs to nutrient- and vascular-rich fens. The goals of my study were to quantify growing season ecosystem respiration (ER) along a gradient of vegetation and permafrost in a boreal wetland complex, and to evaluate the main abiotic and biotic variables that regulate CO₂ release from boreal soils. Highest ER and root respiration were observed at a sedge/forb community and lowest ER and root respiration …

A Contribution To The Taxonomy And Phylogeny Of Oxytropis Section Arctobia (Fabaceae) In North America, Zachary J. Meyers Aug 2012

A Contribution To The Taxonomy And Phylogeny Of Oxytropis Section Arctobia (Fabaceae) In North America, Zachary J. Meyers

Biological Sciences

North American species of Oxytropis section Arctobia are reviewed through herbarium vouchers, scanning electron microscopy of seed coats, and phylogenetic analysis of sequence data to test the validity of the circumscription of section Arctobia as previously proposed. Morphologically, section Arctobia is characterized by few flowered inflorescences, few leaflets per leaf, and a mainly cushion-like habit. The micro-morphological data found considerable infraspecific variation in seed coat patterns. Sequence data from the nuclear TRPT, CNGC5, GA3ox1 genes and the plastid matK gene were used to infer phylogenetic relationships among members of section Arctobia. Analyses using maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference …

This special issue grew out of the event "Honoring Eve: A Symposium celebrating the Work of Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick," which was held on 31 october 2009 at Boston University (BU), about six months after Sedgwick passed away on 12 April. More than two hundred people came to the symposium from all over the United States and as far away as Spain and Israel. they were not just academics, but artists, musicians, writers, and many others who had been touched by Sedgwick's work. Within BU, faculty members from across the university prepared for the symposium by assigning Sedgwick's work in courses …

2012 Nulungu Reconciliation Lecture, Peter Dawson

Nulungu Reconciliation Lecture

An unwavering commitment to Indigenous social justice issues in Australia and excellent leadership qualities have earned Notre Dame student Peter Dawson the 2012 John Koowarta Reconciliation Law Scholarship.

The scholarship, presented by the Law Council of Australia, is in honour of John Koowarta - a traditional owner of the Archer River region in the Cape York Peninsula who famously challenged the Queensland Government in the High Court from breaching the Federal Racial Discrimination Act 1975. His case created an important precedent for the Mabo trial in 1992 which found the existence of native title in Australia.

Prior Learning And Equivalence Class Formation, Michelle Peoples, Kevin J. Tierney, Maeve Bracken, Cara Mckay Aug 2012

Prior Learning And Equivalence Class Formation, Michelle Peoples, Kevin J. Tierney, Maeve Bracken, Cara Mckay

The Psychological Record

Verbally competent volunteers, 6 male and 6 female, served as participants. They were exposed to two experimental procedures. Initially two nonsense syllables (A2 and C1) were paired with positive adjectives and two nonsense syllables (A1 and C2) were paired with negative adjectives, using a procedure analogous to classical conditioning. Following this they were exposed to a stimulus equivalence training procedure. They were taught to match three nonsense syllables A1, A2, and A3 to three novel nonsense syllables B1, B2, and B3 respectively, and subsequently to match B1, B2, and B3 to three new nonsense syllables C1, C2, and C3. Testing …

Stimulus Familiarity And The Delayed Emergence Of Stimulus Equivalence Or Consistent Nonequivalence, Per Holth, Erik Arntzen Aug 2012

Stimulus Familiarity And The Delayed Emergence Of Stimulus Equivalence Or Consistent Nonequivalence, Per Holth, Erik Arntzen

The Psychological Record

Stimulus equivalence, defined as C-A matching, was tested in 80 adults following training in a matching-to-sample task involving arbitrary A-B and B-C matching. In Experiment 1, 50 subjects, successively assigned to one of five groups, were exposed to specific stimulus material. The stimuli for subjects in the first group were Greek letters only. In the remaining groups, pictures were incorporated as A-, B-, and/or C-stimuli. The probability of equivalence was low when the stimulus material consisted only of Greek letters. For the remaining groups, the probability of equivalence varied considerably depending upon whether the A-, B, and/or C-stimuli were pictures. …

The Effects Of Sexually Explicit Words On The Formation Of Stimulus Equivalence Classes, Joseph J. Plaud, George A. Gaither, Michael Franklin, Louise A. Weller, Jeannie Barth Aug 2012

The Effects Of Sexually Explicit Words On The Formation Of Stimulus Equivalence Classes, Joseph J. Plaud, George A. Gaither, Michael Franklin, Louise A. Weller, Jeannie Barth

The Psychological Record

Stimulus equivalence is a behavioral approach to the analysis of the "meaning" of stimulus sets. The formation of three-member (A-->B-->C) stimulus equivalence classes was used to investigate the effects of three different sets of sample and comparison stimuli on emergent behavior. The three stimulus sets were composed of sexually explicit words, sexually ambiguous words, and a third category of neutral words. Forty-one female and male subjects participated in a modified matching-to-sample experiment. Using a mixed crossover design, subjects received training and emergent relationship training in the three stimulus set conditions, controlling for serial order effects. Results revealed a …

Superstitious Math Performance: Interactions Between Rules And Scheduled Contingencies, H. A. Chris Ninness, Sharon K. Ninness Aug 2012

Superstitious Math Performance: Interactions Between Rules And Scheduled Contingencies, H. A. Chris Ninness, Sharon K. Ninness

The Psychological Record

Experimental conditions were designed to examine students' sensitivity to scheduled contingencies and accurate or fallacious rules as these variables influence performance during computer-generated math problems. Experimental subjects were provided: scheduled contingencies followed by extinction, follow-up extinction, and a rules condition promulgating accurate or fallacious rules for accessing reinforcement. Control subjects did not have access to rules; however, sensitivity to direct-acting contingencies was measured during response independent reinforcement. Performing with accurate rules and scheduled contingencies, most experimental subjects correctly answered math problems at accelerated rates and extended durations. Also, providing fallacious rules during response independent reinforcement induced high rates and extended …

Is Acquired Tolerance To Hypothermia Susceptible To Extinction?, Mitchell M. Metzger, Steven B. Harrod, Steven C. Kissinger, David C. Riccio Aug 2012

Is Acquired Tolerance To Hypothermia Susceptible To Extinction?, Mitchell M. Metzger, Steven B. Harrod, Steven C. Kissinger, David C. Riccio

The Psychological Record

Studies examining adaptation to thermoregulatory challenges have shown that tolerance to hypothermia is mediated, in part, by associative (Pavlovian) learning mechanisms. This study examined whether acquired tolerance to deep body cooling (hypothermia) could be extinguished by conditions in which presentations of the environmental cues were presented in the absence of hypothermia treatment. The results of Experiment 1 indicate that five extinction exposures in which the context was presented alone were not sufficient to extinguish established hypothermia tolerance in rats. Experiment 2 demonstrated that tripling the number of daily extinction exposures from 5 to 15 also did not disrupt adaptation to …

The Phantom Array: A Perisaccadic Illusion Of Visual Direction, Wayne A. Hershberger, J. Scott Jordan Aug 2012

The Phantom Array: A Perisaccadic Illusion Of Visual Direction, Wayne A. Hershberger, J. Scott Jordan

The Psychological Record

Naive observers (N = 75) were asked to saccade in the dark across a point light source blinking on and off at 200 Hz and to describe the resultant phantom array (Hershberger, 1987). The vast majority represented this perisaccadic illusion of visual direction essentially as Hershberger described it. Replicable features of the phantom array imply that the perisaccadic shift of retinal local signs (i.e., spatiotopic coordinates) is discontinuous, comprising two separate parts, a discrete partial shift that occurs before the eyes start to move, and a continuous partial shift that is completed at about the same time as the eye …

Chimpanzee (Pan Troglodytes) Counting In A Computerized Testing Program, Michael J. Beran, Duane M. Rumbaugh, E. Sue Savage-Rumbaugh

The Psychological Record

Using computer-mediated joystick manipulation, the ability of a common chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) to select arrays of items equal to a given target number was examined. A random dot condition was included in which all sequence cues were eliminated as a means to reach the target numbers 1 to 4. The participant, Austin, had only the quantity of items already selected as a record of how high the count had progressed. Performance on the random dot trials was found to be significantly above chance and improvement over time was also statistically significant. Results of this experiment provide evidence that Austin behaved …

Experiences In Combining Cubesat Hardware And Commercial Components From Different Manufacturers In Order To Build The Nano Satellite Aisat/Clavis-1, Falk Nohka, Martin Drobczyk, Ansgar Heidecker

Small Satellite Conference

The off-the-shelf availability of a large variety of Cubesat components from different manufacturers enables building-block-like configuration of Cubesat systems. Is it possible to utilize these components to build a nano satellite for scientific payloads? The German Aerospace Center (DLR) internal engineering group Clavis, with the goal of developing a flexible, modular nano satellite platform, was confronted with implementing their design into the AISat mission. The challenges, solutions and lessons learned is what this paper shall transport. From the early steps in designing a satellite bus for DLR internal small payloads to adapting this concept to a real payload and implementing …

Disc Experiment Overview And On-Orbit Performance Results, Andrew Nicholas, Ted Finne, Ivan Galysh, Ed Kline, Mitch Whiteley, Chad Fish, Weston Allen, Steven Grover, Jim Peterson, Bryan Bingham

Small Satellite Conference

The Digital Imaging Star Camera (DISC) experiment has successfully imaged star fields from the International Space Station (ISS). DISC is a Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) led payload developed jointly by NRL and the Utah State University Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) to advance miniaturized technology for accurate precision pointing knowledge in space which is a critical mission requirement for many scientific and operational payloads. The low size, weight and power (< 10x10x10 >cm, < 1kg, < 1 W) sensing platform that will provide an enhanced pointing capability for nano- and pico- satellite busses. It is flying on the ISS as part of the Air Force Space Test Program STP-H3 flight to provide a proof of concept for DISC experiment. This technology represents a key transition from large, high cost, long-timescale programs to small, low-cost, rapid response science enabling sensing platforms. This paper will focus on the instrument design and on-orbit mission performance.
