Senate Judiciary Committee Hearing On “The Citizens United Court And The Continuing Importance Of The Voting Rights Act”, Anthony Johnstone
Faculty Journal Articles & Other Writings
My testimony today concerns the role of the Supreme Court in reviewing the constitutionality of “laws of democracy,” including campaign finance regulation, election administration, and voting rights enforcement. I will compare the different approaches the Court has taken toward two controversies, corporate campaign spending and voter identification laws, and attempt to draw some lessons from the comparison for the Court’s pending review of the Voting Rights Act.

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) play a fundamental role in the immune system by detecting pathogen associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) to sense host infection. Ethanol at doses relevant for humans inhibits the pathogen induced cytokine response mediated through TLRs. The current study was designed to investigate the mechanisms of this effect by determining whether ethanol inhibits TLR3 and TLR4 mediated TNF-? secretion through inhibition of transcription factor activation or post-transcriptional effects. In NF-?B reporter mice, activation of NF-?B in vivo by LPS was inhibited by ethanol (LPS alone yielded 170,000?35,300 arbitrary units of light emission; LPS plus ethanol yielded 56,120?16880, p = …

Removal Of Codeine In Pediatric Oncology: A Qualitative Evaluation Of Success And Attitudes, Karina L. Black, Mary Anne Venner, Jennifer Shepherd, Marcel Romanick, Mark Belletrutti, Shirley Perry
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
Background: Codeine is an opioid analgesic requiring hepatic conversion to morphine via CYP2D6 to provide analgesic effect. CYP2D6 population polymorphisms cause unpredictable conversion to morphine. Multiple reports of death or adverse events in children receiving codeine has led to increased calls for discontinuation of use in children. Our Pediatric Oncology Program volunteered to pilot codeine removal. When looking for implementation strategies for this practice change, neither successful implementation nor barriers to change had been reported. Objectives: To evaluate whether prescription of codeine was reduced, assess the attitudes of health professionals at different points during practice change, determine if our educational …

Exploring The E-Patient Phenomenon In Nursing, Holli A. Devon, Perry M. Gee, Deborah A. Greenwood, Katherine K. Kim, Susan L. Perez, Nancy Staggers
International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)
The availability of health information on the Internet has changed the knowledge power structure between patients and their health care providers. This new phenomenon of patients well informed by electronic information is known as the e-Patient. e-Patients use information technology to actively participate in their health care rather than passively receive health care, thus assuming higher levels of responsibility for their own health and wellness. Nursing can utilize the Data, Information, Knowledge, and Wisdom (DIKW) framework to understand how e-Patients and clinicians may achieve this collective wisdom. The purpose of this review is to examine the e-Patient phenomenon through the …
