Cross-Cultural Comparison Of Sensory Behaviors In Children With Autism., Kristina G Caron, Roseann C Schaaf, Teal W. Benevides, Eynat Gal Sep 2012

Cross-Cultural Comparison Of Sensory Behaviors In Children With Autism., Kristina G Caron, Roseann C Schaaf, Teal W. Benevides, Eynat Gal

Department of Occupational Therapy Faculty Papers

Parents of children with autism frequently report that their children exhibit unusual responses to sensory experiences. Little research is available, however, describing how parents' and children's culture and environment might influence parents' reports of their children's behaviors. This study compared the frequency of parent-reported responses to sensory experiences in children from two countries-Israel and the United States. We administered the Short Sensory Profile to primary caregivers of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and typically developing peers. Results indicate that Israeli parents reported unusual responses to sensory experiences less frequently than U.S. parents for both ASD and typically developing children. …

How Do We Change Practice When We Have The Evidence?, Janice P Burke, Laura N. Gitlin Sep 2012

How Do We Change Practice When We Have The Evidence?, Janice P Burke, Laura N. Gitlin

Department of Occupational Therapy Faculty Papers

Translating research findings into practice includes myriad pragmatic realities, including understanding the suitability of the data to a particular patient group, writing new guidelines for occupational therapy practitioners, facilitating adoption of the guidelines, and instituting new patterns of care for patients. The process is more than a matter of disseminating the information to practitioners and expecting immediate change in patient treatment. Indeed, the field of implementation science is devoted to the identification of the numerous barriers and supports that constrain or expedite practice change in response to research. Moving forward and adopting evidence-based findings will require a focused understanding of …

Gambling On Genes: Ambiguity Aversion Explains Investment In Sisters' Children, Brishti Guha Sep 2012

Gambling On Genes: Ambiguity Aversion Explains Investment In Sisters' Children, Brishti Guha

Research Collection School Of Economics

Many men invest in their sisters’ children instead of their wives’. Existing theories addressing such behavior depend on the level of paternity probability in such men’s societies being implausibly low. I link this anthropologically observed investment behavior with the experimentally observed phenomenon that some individuals are ambiguity averse. Arguing that men’s decisions are made under ambiguity, I show that an increase in ambiguity aversion results in investment in sisters’, rather than wives’, children. I show that this can happen even under risk neutrality. I also consider the special cases of a SEU maximizer and of extreme ambiguity aversion in the …

Origin Of Great Lakes Brown Trout, Salmo Trutta: A Phylogeographic Analysis Using Mtdna Sequence Variation, David Baisch

Masters Theses

The brown trout, Salmo trutta, was first introduced to the Laurentian Great Lakes in 1887 from European broodstocks to found a recreational salmonid fishery; however, the origins of these progenitor lineages remain largely unknown. Trout from these regions are very specialized to their native habitats and matching North American stocks to similar watersheds may help increase survivability by introducing the stock to a more appropriate environment. The objective of this study was to determine the European origins of brown trout found in the Great Lakes. We analyzed 144 brown trout from ten watersheds across Michigan and Wisconsin and identified …

Tension Pneumothorax On Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Leading To Significant Pneumoperitoneum., Hitoshi Hirose, Nicholas C. Cavarocchi, Kathleen Holoyda

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

Veno-venous and veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy is used to support the cardiac and pulmonary systems in the setting of acute failure. Maintaining adequate ECMO flow is crucial for the success of the therapy. Sudden decrease in venous return on ECMO has multiple etiologies, such as intravascular hypovolemia, malposition or kink of the venous cannula, suction occlusion of a cannula, and venous or arterial thrombi. Pathology within the chest, including pneumothorax, tension hemothorax and pericardial tamponade, may also decrease the ECMO flow because of compression of the cannula and decreased atrial volume. Air from a tension pneumothorax may be …

Massive Haemoptysis On Veno-Arterial Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation., Meredith Harrison, Scott W. Cowan, Nicholas C. Cavarocchi, Hitoshi Hirose

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

A 49-year old female presented with severe heart failure with end-organ dysfunction and was placed on veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) as a bridge to a decision for end-organ recovery. While on ECMO, the patient developed massive haemoptysis after a Swan-Ganz catheter manipulation. The haemoptysis was not controllable by conventional methods including bronchoscopy with cold saline and epinephrine lavage, bronchial blocker or angiography. The endotracheal tube was clamped to provide tamponade and the patient relied on full ECMO support for 36 h. After the haemoptysis resolved, the endotracheal tube was unclamped. The patient developed adult respiratory distress syndrome and was …

Temozolomide For Relapsed Primary Cns Lymphoma., Asif Husain Osmani, Nehal L Masood

Department of Medicine

Primary CNS lymphoma (PCNSL) is an aggressive form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma that accounts for 3% of all primary brain tumours. No clear risk factors for PCNSL in immunocompetent patients are known. The disease is more common in men and in elderly persons. Patients with AIDS who have low CD4+ counts are at the greatest risk for PCNSL. Virtually all PCNSLs in patients with AIDS express an Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-related genome. PCNSL is less frequently associated with EBV in patients without AIDS. A 42 years old gentleman diagnosed with primary CNS lymphoma with negative serological test for human immunodeficiency virus was …

Mediation Of A Plant-Spider Association By Specific Volatile Compounds, Ximena J. Nelson, Andrew J. Pratt, Xavier Cheseto, Baldwyn Torto, Robert R. Jackson

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Evarcha culicivora, an East African jumping spider (Salticidae), is the only spider for which there is evidence of innate olfactory affinity for particular plant species. Evarcha culicivora also actively chooses as preferred prey the females of Anopheles mosquitoes, and both sexes of Anopheles are known to visit plants for nectar meals. Here, we identified compounds present in the headspace of one of these species in Kenya, Lantana camara, and then used 11 of these compounds in olfactometer experiments. Our findings show that three terpenes [(E)-β-caryophyllene, α-humulene and 1,8 cineole] can be discriminated by, and are salient to, E. culicivora. The …

Indot Construction Inspection Priorities, Ali Mostafavi, Dulcy M. Abraham

JTRP Technical Reports

In the last decade, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has experienced an increase in their construction projects (e.g., INDOT’s construction spending was $789 million in 2006 and increased to $1,081.4 million in 2010); while the level of its in-house inspection staff and resources has either remained the same or declined. There are different strategies to deal with the need for construction inspection resources and they may include strategies such as outsourcing the inspection of construction activities and using quality control and quality assurance certification programs to reduce the need for in-process inspection. One strategy that could reduce the inspection …

Stable Bifurcations In Semelparous Leslie Models, J. M. Cushing, Shandelle M. Henson Sep 2012

Stable Bifurcations In Semelparous Leslie Models, J. M. Cushing, Shandelle M. Henson

Faculty Publications

In this paper, we consider nonlinear Leslie models for the dynamics of semelparous age-structured populations. We establish stability and instability criteria for positive equilibria that bifurcate from the extinction equilibrium at R0=1. When the bifurcation is to the right (forward or super-critical), the criteria consist of inequalities involving the (low-density) between-class and within-class competition intensities. Roughly speaking, stability (respectively, instability) occurs if between-class competition is weaker (respectively, stronger) than within-class competition. When the bifurcation is to the left (backward or sub-critical), the bifurcating equilibria are unstable. We also give criteria that determine whether the boundary of the positive cone is …

An Item Response Curves Analysis Of The Force Concept Inventory, Gary A. Morris, Nathan Harshman, Lee Branum-Martin, Eric Mazur, Taha Mzoughi, Stephen D. Baker

Faculty Articles

Several years ago, we introduced the idea of item response curves (IRC), a simplistic form of item response theory (IRT), to the physics education research community as a way to examine item performance on diagnostic instruments such as the Force Concept Inventory (FCI). We noted that a full-blown analysis using IRT would be a next logical step, which several authors have since taken. In this paper, we show that our simple approach not only yields similar conclusions in the analysis of the performance of items on the FCI to the more sophisticated and complex IRT analyses but also permits additional …

Series Estimation Of Stochastic Processes: Recent Developments And Econometric Applications, Peter C.B. Phillips, Zhipeng Liao Sep 2012

Series Estimation Of Stochastic Processes: Recent Developments And Econometric Applications, Peter C.B. Phillips, Zhipeng Liao

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

This paper overviews recent developments in series estimation of stochastic processes and some of their applications in econometrics. Underlying this approach is the idea that a stochastic process may under certain conditions be represented in terms of a set of orthonormal basis functions, giving a series representation that involves deterministic functions. Several applications of this series approximation method are discussed. The first shows how a continuous function can be approximated by a linear combination of Brownian motions (BMs), which is useful in the study of the spurious regressions. The second application utilizes the series representation of BM to investigate the …

Leverage And Default In Binomial Economies: A Complete Characterization, Ana Fostel, John Geanakoplos Sep 2012

Leverage And Default In Binomial Economies: A Complete Characterization, Ana Fostel, John Geanakoplos

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Our paper provides a complete characterization of leverage and default in binomial economies with financial assets serving as collateral. Our Binomial No-Default Theorem states that any equilibrium is equivalent (in real allocations and prices) to another equilibrium in which there is no default. Thus actual default is irrelevant, though the potential for default drives the equilibrium and limits borrowing. This result is valid with arbitrary preferences and endowments, contingent or non-contingent promises, many assets and consumption goods, production, and multiple periods. We also show that no-default equilibria would be selected if there were the slightest cost of using collateral or …

Driving Towards Success In The Air Force Cyber Mission: Leveraging Our Heritage To Shape Our Future, David Fadok, Richard Raines Sep 2012

Driving Towards Success In The Air Force Cyber Mission: Leveraging Our Heritage To Shape Our Future, David Fadok, Richard Raines

Faculty Publications

Ongoing debates address what constitutes cyber warfare and whether or not we really are at war in cyberspace. This article does not enter into those issues; rather, it suggests how the Air Force and Air University should move forward to lead and support our nation’s cyber security needs. Thus, it focuses on analogous lessons learned from history, our position today and what it needs to be, and plans for getting there with respect to our cyberspace capabilities.

Age, Period And Cohort Effects On Social Capital, Philip Schwadel, Mike Stout Sep 2012

Age, Period And Cohort Effects On Social Capital, Philip Schwadel, Mike Stout

Department of Sociology: Faculty Publications

Researchers hypothesize that social capital in the United States is not just declining, but that it is declining across generations or birth cohorts. Testing this proposition, we examine changes in social capital using age-period-cohort intrinsic estimator models. Results from analyses of 1972–2010 General Social Survey data show 1) that informal association with neighbors declined across periods while informal association with friends outside of the neighborhood increased across birth cohorts; 2) that formal association was comparatively stable with the exception of relatively high levels of formal association among the early 1920s and early 1930s birth cohorts; and 3) that trust declined …

Is Weak Oral Language Associated With Poor Spelling In School-Age Children With Specific Language Impairment, Dyslexia Or Both?, Jillian H. Mccarthy, Tiffany Hogan, Hugh W. Catts

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that word reading accuracy, not oral language, is associated with spelling performance in school-age children. We compared fourth grade spelling accuracy in children with specific language impairment (SLI), dyslexia or both (SLI/dyslexia) to their typically developing grade-matched peers. Results of the study revealed that children with SLI performed similarly to their typically developing peers on a single-word spelling task. Alternatively, those with dyslexia and SLI/dyslexia evidenced poor spelling accuracy. Errors made by both those with dyslexia and SLI/dyslexia were characterized by numerous phonologic, orthographic and semantic errors. Cumulative results support …

Optimal Reduction Of Electrical Energy Consumption By Supply Air Ac Motors, Keyhan Rafiee

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences Research (NCER) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) strives to be energy efficient through Green Energy. Of course, in meeting some of the requirements for different types of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, certain minimum levels of energy efficiency practices must be met. One such level of energy efficiency, in particular, is reduction in the consumption of electrical energy in buildings. This thesis is a study of methods of reducing the consumption of electrical energy (measured in kW of electrical power) in the UNL Jorgensen Hall (JH) air handling unit 2 …

Predicting Live And Dead Tree Basal Area In Bark Beetle-Affected Forests From Discrete-Return Lidar, Andrew T. Hudak, Benjamin C. Bright, Jose Negron, Robert Mcgaughey, Hans-Erik Andersen, Jeffrey A. Hicke Sep 2012

Predicting Live And Dead Tree Basal Area In Bark Beetle-Affected Forests From Discrete-Return Lidar, Andrew T. Hudak, Benjamin C. Bright, Jose Negron, Robert Mcgaughey, Hans-Erik Andersen, Jeffrey A. Hicke

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Recent bark beetle outbreaks in western North America have been widespread and severe. High tree mortality due to bark beetles affects the fundamental ecosystem processes of primary production and decomposition that largely determine carbon balance (Kurz et al. 2008, Pfeifer et al. 2011, Hicke et al. 2012). Forest managers need accurate data on beetle-induced tree mortality to make better decisions on how best to remediate beetle-affected forests and restore healthy ecosystem services (Negron et al. 2008). Discrete-return LiDAR measures canopy height and density, and LiDAR intensity provides some indication of the spectral reflectance and condition of canopy elements (foliage …
