A Comparative Examination Of How Program Design Components Influence Youth Leadership-Skill Development, Samantha Bates, Dawn Anderson-Butcher, Theresa Ferrari, Christy Clary

Journal of Youth Development

A growing interest in how adolescents can prepare for the workforce has contributed to the development of positive youth development (PYD) programs focused on youth leadership. This study explored what mechanisms and design components support leadership skill development among youth participating in 3 different PYD leadership programs. All of these programs involve high school students, have a focus on leadership, and emphasize college and workforce readiness. The aims of the study were to (a) examine what commonalities and differences in program design components contribute to skill development, (b) identify what leadership skills youth develop by participating in PYD leadership programs, …

“Doing Our Part”: What Motivates Black Family Engagement In An After-School Program, Amanda Case

Journal of Youth Development

Researchers have demonstrated that Black caregivers (a) are more likely than caregivers of any other race to enroll their children in after-school programs, (b) face considerable challenges finding quality after-school programs, and (c) consider family engagement to be a hallmark of quality after-school programs. To date, however, researchers have largely ignored the voices of Black caregivers about what motivates and enables them to engage with their children’s after-school programs. As a result, after-school program staff report continued challenges effectively engaging Black families. The current case study aims to address this gap in the literature using evidence from participant observations, interviews …

Journal of Youth Development

he purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of a 4-week, physical activity-infused social–emotional and character development (SECD) intervention on students’ self-perceptions. Children (N=29) identified as “at risk” (The Great Schools Partnership, 2013) in Grades 2 through 5 who were enrolled in an after-school program participated in the study. A quasi-experimental design was used as children were placed into 2 groups at each after-school program (ASP) site. Data collection included student completion of the Social Emotional Learning Scale (SELS) prior to the intervention and the Social-Emotional Character Development Scale (SECD) pre- and post-intervention. A 2 x 2 repeated …

Nucleic Acid And Non-Nucleic Acid-Based Reprogramming Of Adult Limbal Progenitors To Pluripotency, Sowmya Parameswaran, Sudha Balasubramanian, Norbert Babai, Carolina B. Deldebbio, Donald W. Harms, Channabasavaiah B. Gurumurthy, Mahendra S. Rao, J. Graham Sharp, Iqbal Ahmad

Journal Articles: Ophthalmology

Reprogramming somatic cells to a pluripotent state by nucleic acid based (NAB) approaches, involving the ectopic expression of transcription factors, has emerged as a standard method. We recently demonstrated that limbal progenitors that regenerate cornea are reprogrammable to pluripotency by a non-NAB approach through simple manipulation of microenvironment thus extending the possible therapeutic use of these readily accessible cells beyond the proven treatment of corneal diseases and injury. Therefore, to determine the validity and robustness of non-cell autonomous reprogramming of limbal progenitors for a wider clinical use, here, we have compared their reprogramming by non-NAB and NAB approaches. We observed …

Uncle Sam, Can You Please Sing Us A "Choruss"?, Brody Ehrlich

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The rise of peer-to-peer file-sharing platforms like Napster fundamentally disrupted the music industry, leading to a sharp decline in sales and prompting legal battles over copyright infringement. The note argues that traditional legal and market-based strategies to combat piracy have largely failed, necessitating a revised copyright system that balances industry interests with consumer behavior. It proposes a compulsory licensing model, inspired by the Choruss experiment, to legalize and monetize file sharing while ensuring fair compensation for rights holders.

Ringing The Bell On Concussions: The Rise Of Head Injuries And Cognitive Decline In Football Players, And The Nfl's Obligation To Improve Safety Measures, Jarryd Werts

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The NFL faces significant legal and ethical challenges in addressing the long-term health consequences of concussions among its players. While the league has implemented various safety measures and policies, such as rule changes and educational initiatives, these efforts may be insufficient to fully protect players from the risks associated with repeated head trauma. The NFL must continue to improve its safety protocols not only to safeguard its current and future players but also to set a precedent for other contact sports leagues. The legal battles over negligence and fraud highlight the need for a more robust approach to player health …

I Can Play All Night: Examining The Relationship Between Perceived Tolerance And Drinking Game Alcohol Consumption, Phillip J. Ehret, Joseph W. Labrie, Justin F. Hummer Oct 2012

I Can Play All Night: Examining The Relationship Between Perceived Tolerance And Drinking Game Alcohol Consumption, Phillip J. Ehret, Joseph W. Labrie, Justin F. Hummer

Heads Up!

The present study examined the impact of perceived tolerance to alcohol on maximum alcohol consumption while playing drinking games. Participants were student drinkers (N=3,546) from two west coast universities. Among these students, 69.2% (n=2,290) reported playing a drinking game in the past month. Analyses demonstrated game players had higher perceived tolerances, and consumed more alcohol than non-game players. A regression model revealed that higher levels of perceived tolerance were related to increased maximal alcohol consumption while playing drinking games. Study limitations and implications for future research are discussed.

Assessing student learning is a key component to education. Most institutions assess learning using a score-based grading system. Such systems use multiple individual assignment scores to produce a cumulative final course grade, which may or may not represent what a student has learned. Standards-based grading offers an alternative that addresses the need to directly assess how well students are developing toward meeting the course objectives. The course objectives are the focal point of the grading system, allowing the instructor to assess students on clearly defined objectives throughout the course. The system assesses how well students become proficient in the course …

Control And Fairness In Customer Service, Odile J. Streed, Albert Kagan Oct 2012

Control And Fairness In Customer Service, Odile J. Streed, Albert Kagan

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

Using the concept of “role theories”, the notions of fairness, freedom versus control, and psychological reactance this article examines how these human factors interact in quick service restaurant (QSR) encounters. This research measures the degree of improvement in customer satisfaction as choices offered to customers, employees’ involvement and speed of delivery, vary. Compensatory effects between control and fairness indicate that QSR chains with a strong tradition of control could introduce fairness attributes into the service encounter and increase customer satisfaction without substantially changing existing operating processes. Traditional QSR models may improve competitiveness and strengthen brand image by developing a stronger …

Immune Clearance Of Attenuated Rabies Virus Results In Neuronal Survival With Altered Gene Expression., Emily A Gomme, Christoph Wirblich, Sankar Addya, Glenn F Rall, Matthias J Schnell

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

Rabies virus (RABV) is a highly neurotropic pathogen that typically leads to mortality of infected animals and humans. The precise etiology of rabies neuropathogenesis is unknown, though it is hypothesized to be due either to neuronal death or dysfunction. Analysis of human brains post-mortem reveals surprisingly little tissue damage and neuropathology considering the dramatic clinical symptomology, supporting the neuronal dysfunction model. However, whether or not neurons survive infection and clearance and, provided they do, whether they are functionally restored to their pre-infection phenotype has not been determined in vivo for RABV, or any neurotropic virus. This is due, in part, …

Beyond Economics In Pay For Performance, Tamara C. Belinfanti Oct 2012

Beyond Economics In Pay For Performance, Tamara C. Belinfanti

Articles & Chapters

This article argues that while much of the intellectual energy has focused on the economics of executive pay, the challenge of executive compensation is as much a challenge of human behavior as it is one of economics. The raison d’etre of pay for performance (PFP) is to motivate executives to make decisions that are in the best interest of their firm and its shareholders. Attention to the relevant individual, situational, cultural, and institutional dynamics (what I term “behavioral dynamics”) that affect how executives are motivated and how they value future rewards is critical for the sustainability of PFP as a …
