Technology Forecasting Via Published Patent Applications And Patent Grants, Dar-Zen Chen, Chang-Pin Lin, Mu-Hsuan Huang, Yi-Tung Chan

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The objective of this research is to study and establish the relationships between published patent applications and patent grants for exploring the technology development trend on a specific technology since more and more patents have their applications published before they are granted. Two modeling algorithms based on the patent grant/publish ratio as well as one long-term modeling algorithm based on the average publish-to-grant lag, were developed accordingly. The relationships between patent grants and published patent applications were constructed through two case studies on Magnetic Random Access Memory and Organic Light-Emitting Diode technologies and corresponding forecasts were then conducted. Comparing to …

Applying A Two-Step Maximum Likelihood Method To Examine The Deposit Insurance Program Of Taiwan, David K. Wang, Chun-Chou Wu, Heng-Chih Chou Aug 2012

Applying A Two-Step Maximum Likelihood Method To Examine The Deposit Insurance Program Of Taiwan, David K. Wang, Chun-Chou Wu, Heng-Chih Chou

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper examines the deposit insurance program of Taiwan. We adopt Duan et al. [4]’s deposit insurance pricing model, and estimate the deposit insurance premium by the Duan and Simonato two-step maximum likelihood method [5]. Our results show that the maximum likelihood estimates for the deposit insurance premium are considerably higher than the official rates currently charged by the Central Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC), the deposit insuring agency of Taiwan, indicating that the CDIC deposit insurance program appears to hand out a substantial subsidy to the banks in Taiwan. Our results also show that the CDIC in fact grants too …

Study On The Seismic Behavior Of Self-Anchored Suspension Bridges, Wen-Liang Qiu, Chang-Huan Kou, Chin-Sheng Kao, Shih-Wei Ma, Jiun Yang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The suspension bridge has a beautiful structural shape and an excellent spanning ability. The self-anchored suspension bridge has its main cables anchored directly on the two ends of the main girders, saving construction costs and time incurred during the anchorage construction of an earth-anchored suspension bridge. However, the feasibility of a self-anchored suspension bridge in a strong earthquake zone and the use of dampers to reduce seismic responses have yet to be fully investigated. Using the Yellow-River Road Bridge in Mainland as an example, this study sets out to analyze and investigate a series of seismic responses of a self-anchored …

Safety Stock Estimation Of Unit Load Devices For International Airline Operations, Hua-An Lu, Chien-Yi Chen Aug 2012

Safety Stock Estimation Of Unit Load Devices For International Airline Operations, Hua-An Lu, Chien-Yi Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Unit load devices (ULDs) are used to load air cargo and passengers’ checked baggage for wide-bodied aircraft operations. Since ULDs are reusable at the destination, airlines can invest in an appropriate fleet size for their requirements. The estimation of safety stock levels for every operating airport is a premeditated task because airlines must prepare enough devices for the outbound consignments of each flight. The variance of the number of used devices for each arrival and departure flight will influence the stock level of an airport. For scheduled international services, this study proposes an analytic method based on a cyclically time-sequenced …

A Manifold-Based Exponentially Convergent Algorithm For Solving Non-Linear Partial Differential Equations, Chein-Shan Liu Aug 2012

A Manifold-Based Exponentially Convergent Algorithm For Solving Non-Linear Partial Differential Equations, Chein-Shan Liu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

For solving a non-linear system of algebraic equations of the type: Fi(xj) = 0, i, j = 1, …, n, a Newton-like algorithm is still the most popular one; however, it had some drawbacks as being locally convergent, sensitive to initial guess, and time consumption in finding the inversion of the Jacobian matrix ∂Fi /∂xj. Based-on a manifold defined in the space of (xi, t) we can derive a system of non-linear Ordinary Differential Equations (ODEs) in terms of the fictitious time-like variable t, and the residual error is exponentially decreased to zero along the path of x(t) by solving …

The Freak Wave Potential Of Tyhoon Swell, Nai-Kuang Liang Aug 2012

The Freak Wave Potential Of Tyhoon Swell, Nai-Kuang Liang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Freak waves are so-called rogue waves, which are considered nearly impossible according to traditional ocean wave theory and sometimes cause coastal and sea wrecks. There are already some hypotheses that explain freak wave occurrence. However, the moving wind system generates swells which can be enhanced by swell energy flux accumulation. A newlydefined parameter “Freak Wave Potential Index” Φ for the typhoon swell can manifest the possibility for a freak wave occurrence. This index can be correctly estimated, because actual typhoon datum is already known. The “Freak Wave Potential Index” concept may also be used for other moving wind systems.

Health-Related Quality Of Life And Future Care Planning Among Older Adults: Exploring The Role Of Hope As A Moderator, Jodi L. Southerland Aug 2012

Health-Related Quality Of Life And Future Care Planning Among Older Adults: Exploring The Role Of Hope As A Moderator, Jodi L. Southerland

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Older adults have an increased risk for illness and disease, factors that can lead to functional impairment and intensify the need for reliance on supportive services. Planning for long-term care needs is a vital component of healthy aging and continued autonomy. Yet, many older adults fail to make plans in advance, perhaps due to differences in personal characteristics.

The moderating effects of trait hope on the relationship between health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and preparation for future care needs (PFCN) was studied in a sample of 65 older adult primary care patients (<65 years) in western New York. Participants completed a questionnaire on 5 dimensions of PFCN (awareness of risk, information gathering, decisions about care preferences, concrete planning, and active avoidance). In addition, data were collected on five HRQoL domains (physical function, physical role function, emotional role function, social function, and bodily pain) and trait hope. Moderated multiple regression was used to test the moderator hypothesis controlling for personal characteristics. Post-hoc probing was used to further examine significant interactions.

At the bivariate level, social functioning, physical …

Hydrologic Data Assimilation With A Hillslope-Scale-Resolving Model And L Band Radar Observations: Synthetic Experiments With The Ensemble Kalman Filter, Alejandro N. Flores, Rafael L. Bras, Dara Entekhabi Aug 2012

Hydrologic Data Assimilation With A Hillslope-Scale-Resolving Model And L Band Radar Observations: Synthetic Experiments With The Ensemble Kalman Filter, Alejandro N. Flores, Rafael L. Bras, Dara Entekhabi

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Soil moisture information is critical for applications like landslide susceptibility analysis and military trafficability assessment. Existing technologies cannot observe soil moisture at spatial scales of hillslopes (e.g., 100 to 102 m) and over large areas (e.g., 102 to 105 km2) with sufficiently high temporal coverage (e.g., days). Physics-based hydrologic models can simulate soil moisture at the necessary spatial and temporal scales, albeit with error. We develop and test a data assimilation framework based on the ensemble Kalman filter for constraining uncertain simulated high-resolution soil moisture fields to anticipated remote sensing products, specifically NASA's Soil …

The Structure Of The Bfrb-Bfd Complex Reveals Protein-Protein Interactions Enabling Iron Release From Bacterioferritin, Huili Yao, Yan Wang, Scott Lovell, Ritesh Kumar, Anatoly M. Ruvinsky, Kevin P. Battaile, Ilya A. Vakser, Mario Rivera

Faculty Publications

Ferritin-like molecules are unique to cellular iron homeostasis because they can store iron at concentrations much higher than those dictated by the solubility of Fe3+. Very little is known about the protein interactions that deliver iron for storage or promote the mobilization of stored iron from ferritin-like molecules. Here, we report the X-ray crystal structure of Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacterioferritin (Pa-BfrB) in complex with bacterioferritin-associated ferredoxin (Pa-Bfd) at 2.0 Å resolution. As the first example of a ferritin-like molecule in complex with a cognate partner, the structure provides unprecedented insight into the complementary interface that enables the [2Fe-2S] cluster of Pa-Bfd …

Antony Van Leeuwenhoek: Creation “Magnified” Through His Magnificent Microscopes, Alan L. Gillen, Douglas Oliver

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Although van Leeuwenhoek was not the inventor of the microscope, he advanced it more than anyone else for seeing living things.

Antony van Leeuwenhoek1 (Fig. 1) found great joy in God’s smallest creatures. He first discovered protozoans in his youth. The Dutch haberdasher retained a child-like joy of discovery from his youth until his death at age 90. He lived to see tiny microbes though his homemade microscopes. He loved to grind and focus a new lens in order to see the unseen world. Leeuwenhoek spent countless hours grinding tiny lenses and looking through them. This Christian lay biologist …

Fuzzy Statistical Refinement For The Forecasting Of Tenders For Roadway Construction, Jeng-Wen Lin, Cheng-Wu Chen, Ting-Chang Hsu

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Due to market competition, construction companies often place low bids when tenders are invited for domestic public construction projects. Over-competition can lead to vicious price wars to win a tender, which can in turn seriously affect the quality of construction. This study aims to establish an accurate Taiwan based model for the forecasting of the tendered price for roadway construction. This model is designed to assist the public sector to determine what would be a reasonable reserve price or award price. In order to ensure accurate predictions, a data classification system is established using fuzzy set theory. For each category …

Calcium Cycling Disturbances And Arrhythmogenesis, Namit Gaur Aug 2012

Calcium Cycling Disturbances And Arrhythmogenesis, Namit Gaur

McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations

In this work, a detailed multiscale computational model of Ca cycling and action potential in a ventricular myocyte is developed and used to study mechanisms of arrhythmias associated with mutations in the ryanodine receptor (RyR). The multiscale ventricular myocyte model reproduces experimentally observed Ca dynamics both at the local dyadic scale and at the global whole-cell scale, while also simulating the action potential (AP) shaped by membrane ionic currents. The model represents stochastic activation of L-type Ca channels (LCCs) and RyRs in the dyads and simulates random generation of Ca sparks both during excitation-contraction coupling (ECC) and during diastole. The …
