The transformation of the Roman world [fourth to ninth centuries common era (CE)], culminating in the Western Roman Empire’s fall, marked a fundamental transition in European history. Key questions persist regarding the regionally specific nature of this transformation. We generated a paleogenomic dataset to reconstruct post-Roman organizations in the Little Hungarian Plain at microregional resolution. Genetic and archaeological analyses of two Roman (n = 68) and five post-Roman (n = 246) sites reveal a rise in Northern European ancestry, reflecting large-scale population movements into this region. This qualitative narrative inquiry study examined the transition experiences of an individual with an emotional and behavioral disorder (EBD) as she navigated the process from high school to adulthood through participation in a supported work trial experience. Guided by Disability Critical Race Theory (DisCrit), the study explored the participant’s story and the meaning conveyed through her transition experiences, including the role of structured support from school personnel and professionals, as well as the influence of supported work experiences on her development of independence, confidence, and self-awareness. Individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) are uniquely vulnerable to body image dissatisfaction due to a complex interplay of pre-existing psychosocial risk factors and health demands necessitated by T1D care. These individual-level risk factors lend to high degrees of heterogeneity in body image (dis)satisfaction. Given that body image dissatisfaction heightens the risk of disordered eating behaviors and subsequent adverse diabetes-related outcomes, it is important to understand antecedents of body image dissatisfaction in individuals with T1D to inform care. In 2018, Congress passed the First Step Act, amending 18 U.S.C. § 3582(c)(1)(A) to permit federally incarcerated individuals to directly petition district courts for early release. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, thousands of individuals did so, citing staggering prison death rates and asserting that further incarceration unjustly imperiled their health. Largely unprepared for the deluge, district courts granted 25.7 percent of those petitions. Without precedent to guide them, their decisions were and remain highly discretionary, based on dozens of interrelated variables and legal factors. Those decisions are also largely insulated from appellate review.

In the stylized world of contract theory, contracting parties write optimal agreements that maximize their collective utility by balancing front-end and back-end costs and benefits. In the real world of business deals, however, drafters rarely even approximate this ideal of economic efficiency, let alone achieve it. The right to a trial by jury is a foundational cornerstone of American democracy. This right has long been obfuscated by institutional inequality, preventing defendants from receiving a genuinely representative jury of their peers. California legislators proposed Assembly Bills 1452, 1981, and 881 to temporarily increase juror stipends for low-income jurors in select superior courts, hoping to address socioeconomic barriers to jury service. While AB 1452 and AB 1981 were enacted, the Governor vetoed AB 881.

The incorporation of crumb rubber derived from waste tires in asphalt pavements has gained increasing attention as a strategy to enhance performance while reducing environmental impacts, particularly in cold regions such as the Midwestern United States, where pavements are subjected to severe thermal stresses and freeze–thaw cycles. Despite the numerous performance benefits observed in previous laboratory-scale studies, field demonstrations can play a critical role in validating the use of recycled waste tires as asphalt additives. This study explores the implementation of Community Forest Management (CFM) and its impacts on ecosystem services and the local livelihoods in Thua Thien Hue province. Through interviews with CFM households, non-CFM households and local representatives, it found that although CFM contributes positively to the enhancement of ecosystem services, limitations remain. Specifically, CFM payments only account for up to 10% of households' income and therefore activities such as patrolling tend to be left to older, non-earning household members. The study also found evidence of `reverse exclusion' where limiting CFM participation to poor households also limited the capacity of the group to …

Hydrogels offer attractive matrices for incorporating inorganic metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) to generate multifunctional hybrid materials, but challenges remain in scalable synthesis and correlating their properties to bio-interaction. Therefore, we report the synthesis and characterization of poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (pHEMA) hydrogels, and pHEMA hydrogels encapsulating iron oxide or zinc oxide NPs, using a modified free-radical polymerization. Dose-dependent survivorship studies on Drosophila melanogaster revealed that both NP-embedded hydrogels are tolerated over a wide dose range (e.g., 50–200 mg), although ZnO NP-gels exhibit lower survivorship at some concentrations due to their inherent composition and a wider size distribution of iron oxide NPs.

Online higher education relies heavily on instructional videos, yet many faculty-produced media assets inadvertently induce high extraneous cognitive load. Instructional designers frequently face an “expert bottleneck,” lacking the operational bandwidth required to conduct manual, frame-by-frame pedagogical audits across expanding institutional media catalogs. To bridge this research-practice gap, this paper presents an operational blueprint for the Multimodal Video Evaluator (MVE), an open-access, AI-driven workflow designed to automate multimedia quality assurance. BACKGROUND: Conferences are an important venue for trainees and students to engage in scholarly activities and networking. However, cost presents a significant consideration for students looking to attend conferences as institutional funding varies. In this study, we analyze the attendance costs of vascular conferences.

METHODS: Thirty-one vascular surgery conferences were identified with 12 regional and 6 national, and 13 international. Invitation-only conferences were excluded from the analysis. Cost of attendance was stratified by early and regular registration timing and attending, trainee, and student status. Military burn pits used during post-9/11 U.S. military deployments functioned as uncontrolled combustion systems and were widely utilized to dispose of large volumes of outdoor waste by burning. Burn pits involved heterogeneous waste materials burned under variable temperature and oxygen conditions. These combustion environments generated complex, toxic, multipollutant airborne emission mixtures that included particulate matter (PM2.5), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This narrative review synthesizes epidemiologic, experimental, and mechanistic evidence linking burn pit emissions to disruption of the lung–brain axis and adverse neurological outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To identify subgroups with similar social determinants of health (SDOH) characteristics using latent class analysis (LCA) and examine their associations with physical and mental health, cognitive function and missed workdays at 3 and 6 months post-SARS-CoV-2 infection. We hypothesised that intersecting SDOH factors would differentially influence COVID-19-related health outcomes across subgroups.
