270: How To Win The Presidency With Just 17.56% Of The Popular Vote, Charles D. Wessell

Math Faculty Publications

With the U.S. presidential election fast approaching we will often be reminded that the candidate who receives the most votes is not necessarily elected president. Instead, the winning candidate must receive a majority of the 538 electoral votes awarded by the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Someone with a curious mathematical mind might then wonder: What is the small fraction of the popular vote a candidate can receive and still be elected president? [excerpt]

Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion: Thinking Beyond Access, Janet M. Riggs Sep 2012

Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion: Thinking Beyond Access, Janet M. Riggs

Reports from the President’s Office

Last spring I announced at a faculty meeting that a major theme for our campus this year would be diversity and inclusion. I’d like to add equity to that framework as well. This year I hope that we can develop a shared understanding of these topics and some goals to which we can aspire as a community.

Five years ago Gettysburg College established a set of four strategic directions to guide our planning and decision-making: Engagement, Distinction, Access, and Connection. At that time we described Access as our aspiration to “increase the diversity of the student body and create a …

Faculty Curriculum Styles: Do Style Preferences Influence The Preparation Of Aspiring Teachers?, Ralph Jasparro, Felice D. Billups Sep 2012

Faculty Curriculum Styles: Do Style Preferences Influence The Preparation Of Aspiring Teachers?, Ralph Jasparro, Felice D. Billups

Higher Education

This study explored university education faculty perceptions of their curriculum styles and their influence on the preparation of aspiring teachers. Using Miller’s (2011) curriculum inventory, a sequential explanatory mixed methods design included (N =11) graduate education faculty who self-identified with one of four schools of curriculum design: linear, holistic, laissez-faire, critical theorist. A follow-up focus group was conducted with N = 7 participants, where their views and theories of curriculum were shared regarding effective design and implementation of curriculum, and the transmission of personal theories to aspiring teachers. Results may be valuable to those who prepare aspiring teachers and develop …

Nest Predation Risk And Growth Strategies Of Passerine Species: Grow Fast Or Develop Traits To Escape Risk?, Yi-Ru Cheng, Thomas E. Martin Sep 2012

Nest Predation Risk And Growth Strategies Of Passerine Species: Grow Fast Or Develop Traits To Escape Risk?, Yi-Ru Cheng, Thomas E. Martin

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Different body components are thought to trade off in their growth and development rates, but the causes for relative prioritization of any trait remains a critical question. Offspring of species at higher risk of predation might prioritize development of locomotor traits that facilitate escaping risky environments over growth of mass. We tested this possibility in 12 altricial passerine species that differed in their risk of nest predation. We found that rates of growth and development of mass, wings, and endothermy increased with nest predation risk across species. In particular, species with higher nest predation risk exhibited relatively faster growth of …

Continuous Single-Column Model Evaluation At A Permanent Meteorological Supersite, Roel A.J. Neggers, A. Pier Siebesma, Thijs Heus

Physics Faculty Publications

Uncertainties in numerical predictions of weather and climate are often linked to the representation of unresolved processes that act relatively quickly compared to the resolved general circulation. These processes include turbulence, convection, clouds, and radiation. Single-column model (SCM) simulation of idealized cases and the subsequent evaluation against large-eddy simulation (LES) results has become an often used and relied on method to obtain insight at process level into the behavior of such parameterization schemes; benefits of SCM simulation are the enhanced model transparency and the high computational efficiency. Although this approach has achieved demonstrable success, some shortcomings have been identified; among …

Center for Public Service Publications and Reports

In the spring and summer of 2012 the State of Oregon commissioned a study from Portland State University’s Center for Public Service to examine the single biggest cost of most government jurisdictions: personnel costs. Working closely with the League of Oregon Cities and the Association of Oregon Counties, the state and the CPS research team identified 21 different city and county jurisdictions in Oregon and southwest Washington, in addition to using state of Oregon data. The research team then identified 11 different job titles that were chosen for their range of duties and the relatively high degree of position comparability …

Poliovirus Infection Transiently Increases Copii Vesicle Budding, Meg Trahey, Hyung Suk Oh, Craig E. Cameron, Jesse C. Hay

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Poliovirus (PV) requires membranes of the host cell's secretory pathway to generate replication complexes (RCs) for viral RNA synthesis. Recent work identified the intermediate compartment and the Golgi apparatus as the precursors of the replication "organelles" of PV (N. Y. Hsu et al., Cell 141:799-811, 2010). In this study, we examined the effect of PV on COPII vesicles, the secretory cargo carriers that bud from the endoplasmic reticulum and homotypically fuse to form the intermediate compartment that matures into the Golgi apparatus. We found that infection by PV results in a biphasic change in functional COPII vesicle biogenesis in cells, …

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Burn injury results in a chronic inflammatory, hypermetabolic, and hypercatabolic state persisting long after initial injury and wound healing. Burn survivors experience a profound and prolonged loss of lean body mass, fat mass, and bone mineral density, associated with significant morbidity and reduced quality of life. Understanding the mechanisms responsible is essential for developing therapies. A complete characterization of the pathophysiology of burn cachexia in a reproducible mouse model was lacking.

METHODS: Young adult (12-16 weeks of age) male C57BL/6J mice were given full thickness burns using heated brass plates or sham injury. Food and water intake, organ and …

Estate Planning, Tamara L. Cushing

Rural Tax Education

No matter your age, as a landowner, a business person, or simply a homeowner with valuables you want to go to someone special, you should be concerned about the future of your business or the distribution of the property in question to the right individual or organization. The intent of estate planning is to plan for the successful distribution of property in accordance with the wishes of the deceased and to do so with a minimum of delay and anguish immediately after the death of an older generation. This is typically one of the most emotional times of our lives …

(c) What educational benefits did microblogging have on teaching and learning? and (d) What suggestions and implications did the current research have for future MIE research and practices? The analysis suggested …

From Breadwinner To Breadmaker: The Experiences Of Stay- At- Home Fathers In Ireland Today, Eoin O'Brien Sep 2012

From Breadwinner To Breadmaker: The Experiences Of Stay- At- Home Fathers In Ireland Today, Eoin O'Brien

Dissertations

The experience and views of men who have become stay-at-home fathers has been an area of research that has, only in recent decades, become popular to study. This study highlights that there is a dearth of literature from an Irish perspective and that little is known about the topic.
Internationally, research has shown that there appears to be a strong link between masculine identity and the realm of paid employment. It also shows that fathers struggle in their attempts to balance being involved fathers while maintaining a foothold in paid employment.
The literature highlights that stay-at-home fathers begin to break …

Shared Patron-Driven Acquisition Within A Consortium: The Ocul Pda Pilot, Harriet Rykse, Kate Davis, Lei Jin, Colleen Neely

Western Libraries Publications

In September 2010 members of the Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL) participated in a Patron Driven Acquisitions (PDA) pilot to determine how this purchasing model might be adapted to a consortium. OCUL understood that developing a model that would allow patrons to purchase titles for different collections would be complicated. Careful thought went into balancing the needs of individual members with the needs of the consortium. This paper describes the project and examines the results from three distinct perspectives in the hopes of gaining a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities of PDA at a consortial level.

Paediatrics Publications

Peyer's patches consist of domains of specialized intestinal epithelium overlying gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT). Luminal antigens reach the GALT by translocation through epithelial gatekeeper cells, the so-calledMcells. We recently demonstrated that all epithelial cells required for the digestive functions of the intestine are generated from Lgr5-expressing stem cells. Here, we show thatMcells also derive from these crypt-based Lgr5 stem cells. The Ets family transcription factor SpiB, known to control effector functions of bone marrow-derived immune cells, is specifically expressed inMcells. In SpiB-/-mice, Mcells are entirely absent, which occurs in a cell-autonomous fashion. It has been shown that Tnfsf11 (RankL) can …

Regulation Of Transcription And Chromatin Structure By Prb: Here, There And Everywhere, Srikanth Talluri, Frederick A. Dick

Paediatrics Publications

Commitment to divide is one of the most crucial steps in the mammalian cell division cycle. It is critical for tissue and organismal homeostasis, and consequently is highly regulated. The vast majority of cancers evade proliferative control, further emphasizing the importance of the commitment step in cell cycle regulation. The Retinoblastoma (RB) tumor suppressor pathway regulates this decision-making step. Since being the subject of Knudson's 'two hit hypothesis', there has been considerable interest in understanding pRB's role in cancer. It is best known for repressing E2F dependent transcription of cell cycle genes. However, pRB's role in controlling chromatin structure is …
