Thermoelectric Effects In Self-Heating Silicon Microwires, Gokhan Bakan Sep 2012

Thermoelectric Effects In Self-Heating Silicon Microwires, Gokhan Bakan

Doctoral Dissertations

Self-heating mechanisms of small-scale structures have been an important subject where electrical and thermal transports are coupled, such as many electronic and optoelectronic devices, micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), thermoelectric energy conversion devices and phase-change memory devices. In this work, nanocrystalline silicon microwires (L: 1 – 30 μm, Width: 0.1 – 1 μm, Thickness: 50 – 130 nm) are self-heated either through a single, short duration (< 1 μs) or longer DC/AC signal. The motivation behind this work is to melt the structures using electrical stress and to achieve larger crystalline domains (ultimately a single crystal domain) on the wires upon resolidification. Scanning electron micrographs show very smooth wire surfaces after the voltage pulse compared to as-fabricated nanocrystalline texture. Voltage-pulse induced self-heating leads to significant conductance improvement, suggesting crystallization of the wires. The minimum resistivity during the pulse extracted from wires of different dimensions matches previously reported values for liquid silicon. Hence, nanocrystalline silicon microwires melt through self-heating during the voltage pulse and resolidify upon termination of the pulse, resulting in very smooth and less-resistive crystalline structures.

Strong thermoelectric effects are observed on self-heated wires as asymmetric self-heating and melting of the wires when a microsecond voltage pulse is applied to melt only some portion (~ 50 %) of the wires. This …

Summary Of In Re Parental Rights As To J.D.N., 128 Nev. Adv. Op. 44, Timothy A. Wiseman

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

The Court considered whether an objection to the admission of an entire set of documents as hearsay preserved the issue for appeal. Second, the Court considered what burden of proof should be used to rebut the parental-fault and child’s-best-interest presumptions found in NEV. REV. STAT. § 128.109. Finally, the Court considered if substantial evidence supported the decision to terminate parental rights and if the district court had considered all required factors.

Energy Storage Characteristics Of A New Rechargeable Solid Oxide Iron-Air Battery, Xuan Zhao, Nansheng Xu, Xue Li, Yunhui Gong, Kevin Huang

Faculty Publications

Cost effective and large scale energy storage is critical to renewable energy integration and smart-grid energy infrastructure. Rechargeable batteries have great potential to become a class of cost effective technology suited for large scale energy storage. In this paper, we report the energy storage characteristics of a newly developed rechargeable solid oxide iron–air battery. Investigations of the battery’s performance under various current densities and cycle durations show that iron utilization plays a determining role in storage capacity and round-trip efficiency. Further studies of the battery's cycle life reveal a unique charge-cycle originated degradation mechanism that can be interpreted by a …

Three Essays In Comparative Political Economy, Ugur Ozdemir Sep 2012

Three Essays In Comparative Political Economy, Ugur Ozdemir

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This thesis consists of three chapters. The first two chapters offer game theoretical models for different linkages between political parties and the citizens: programmatic linkage and clientelistic linkage. Empirical implications of these models are discussed using real world data on Turkey and USA through statistical analysis and simulation. The last chapter steps back from the specific strategies of political agents to examine in a more general context the concepts of institutional maintenance and institutional change.

Icterus Neonatorum In Near-Term And Term Infants : An Overview, Rehan Ali, Shakeel Ahmed, Maqbool Ahmad, Khalil

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Neonatal jaundice is the yellowish discoloration of the skin and/or sclerae of newborn infants caused by tissue deposition of bilirubin. Physiological jaundice is mild, unconjugated (indirect-reacting) bilirubinaemia, and affects nearly all newborns. Physiological jaundice levels typically peak at 5 to 6 mg/dL (86 to 103 µmol/L) at 72 to 96 hours of age, and do not exceed 17 to 18 mg/dL (291–308 µmol/L). Levels may not peak until seven days of age in Asian infants, or in infants born at 35 to 37 weeks’ gestation. Higher levels of unconjugated hyperbilirubinaemia are considered pathological and occur in a variety of conditions. …

Snoring-Induced Nerve Lesions In The Upper Airway, Rajesh P. Poothrikovil, Mohammed A. Al Abri Sep 2012

Snoring-Induced Nerve Lesions In The Upper Airway, Rajesh P. Poothrikovil, Mohammed A. Al Abri

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

The prevalence of habitual snoring is extremely high in the general population, and is reported to be roughly 40% in men and 20% in women. The low-frequency vibrations of snoring may cause physical trauma and, more specifically, peripheral nerve injuries, just as jobs which require workers to use vibrating tools over the course of many years result in local nerve lesions in the hands. Histopathological analysis of upper airway (UA) muscles have shown strong evidence of a varying severity of neurological lesions in groups of snoring patients. Neurophysiological assessment shows evidence of active and chronic denervation and re-innervation in the …
