On The Respectful Use Of Animals, Jon Garthoff Sep 2012

On The Respectful Use Of Animals, Jon Garthoff

Between the Species

In his essay “The Integration of the Ethic of the Respectful Use of Animals into the Law”, David Favre begins to articulate a new framework for understanding the legal status of nonhuman animals. The present essay supports the broad contours of Favre’s framework, but raises challenges for some of the framework’s elements. The first half questions Favre’s claim that possession of DNA and the capacity for life underlie the need for a more robust conception of animal legal standing. The second half questions Favre’s prior proposal that animals be deemed persons under law and questions his pragmatic suggestion that judges …

Skeletal Muscle Volume Following Dehydration Induced By Exercise In Heat, Kyle J. Hackney, Summer B. Cook, Timothy J. Fairchild, Lori L. Ploutz-Snyder Sep 2012

Skeletal Muscle Volume Following Dehydration Induced By Exercise In Heat, Kyle J. Hackney, Summer B. Cook, Timothy J. Fairchild, Lori L. Ploutz-Snyder

Kinesiology

Background

Intracellular skeletal muscle water is redistributed into the extracellular compartment during periods of dehydration, suggesting an associated decline in muscle volume. The purpose of this study was to evaluate skeletal muscle volume in active (knee extensors (KE)) and less active (biceps/triceps brachii, deltoid) musculature following dehydration induced by exercise in heat.

Methods

Twelve participants (seven men, five women) cycled in the heat under two conditions: (1) dehydration (DHYD) resulting in 3% and 5% losses of estimated total body water (ETBW), which was assessed by changes in body mass, and (2) fluid replacement (FR) where 3% and 5% …

Variability Of The Blazar 4c 38.41 (B3 1633+382) From Ghz Frequencies To Gev Energies, Niall Smith, Et. Al. Sep 2012

Variability Of The Blazar 4c 38.41 (B3 1633+382) From Ghz Frequencies To Gev Energies, Niall Smith, Et. Al.

Blackrock Castle Observatory Publications

Context. After years of modest optical activity, the quasar-type blazar 4C 38.41 (B3 1633+382) experienced a large outburst in 2011, which was detected throughout the entire electromagnetic spectrum, renewing interest in this source.

Aims. We present the results of low-energy multifrequency monitoring by the GLAST-AGILE Support Program (GASP) of the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT) consortium and collaborators, as well as those of spectropolarimetric/spectrophotometric monitoring at the Steward Observatory. We also analyse high-energy observations of the Swift and Fermi satellites. This combined study aims to provide insights into the source broad-band emission and variability properties.

Methods. We assemble …

Adult Sickle Cell Disease : A Five-Year Experience Of Intensive Care Management In A University Hospital In Oman, Qutaiba A. Tawfic, Rajini Kausalya, Dhuha Burad, Jyoti, Ahmed K. Mohammed, Aravind Narayanan Sep 2012

Adult Sickle Cell Disease : A Five-Year Experience Of Intensive Care Management In A University Hospital In Oman, Qutaiba A. Tawfic, Rajini Kausalya, Dhuha Burad, Jyoti, Ahmed K. Mohammed, Aravind Narayanan

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objectives: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited disease caused by an abnormal type of haemoglobin. It is one of the most common genetic blood disorders in the Gulf area, including Oman. It may be associated with complications requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission. This study investigated the causes of ICU admission for SCD patients. Methods: This was a retrospective analysis of all adult patients ≥12 years old with SCD admitted to Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (SQUH) ICU between 1st January 2005 and 31st December 2009. Results: A total number of 49 sickle cell patients were admitted 56 times to …

Caesarean Myomectomy : Feasibility And Safety, Lovina Sm Machado, Vaidyanathan Gowri, Nihal Al-Kharusi, Lamya

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objectives: Caesarean myomectomy has traditionally been discouraged due to fears of intractable haemorrhage and increased postoperative morbidity. However, a number of authors have recently shown that myomectomy during Caesarean section does not increase the risk of haemorrhage or postoperative morbidity. Methods: We present a series of 8 cases from Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Oman, where myomectomy was performed during Caesarean section for large lower segment fibroids. Seven were anterior lower segment fibroids, while one was a posterior lower uterine fibroid which interfered with closure of the uterine incision. The antenatal course, perioperative management, and postoperative morbidity are discussed. Results: The …

Gpu-Based High-Performance Computing, Su Chen Sep 2012

Gpu-Based High-Performance Computing, Su Chen

Student Theses and Dissertations

In the past few years, multi-core and many-core CPU/GPU architectures have received unprecedented attention and were becoming the only hope to keep Moore's law from working in this age. Because of the change of the computer architecture and the corresponding programming model, software development for the new GPU architectures has not been fully researched and is far behind the development of hardware. Applications and algorithms need to be redesigned and optimized as GPU code so that reasonable comparison can be made between CPU and GPU versions in term of performance. In this thesis work, the author collects four major research …
