Ouch! Recruitment Of Overweight And Obese Adolescent Boys For Qualitative Research, Zachary Morrison, David Gregory, Steven Thibodeau, Jennifer Copeland Aug 2012

Ouch! Recruitment Of Overweight And Obese Adolescent Boys For Qualitative Research, Zachary Morrison, David Gregory, Steven Thibodeau, Jennifer Copeland

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this study is to examine the complexities of recruiting overweight and obese adolescent boys for qualitative research, discuss specific recruitment considerations for this population, and offer guidance to researchers interested in recruiting overweight adolescent boys. Three overweight adolescent boys and six community professionals participated in this study. Data collection methods included fieldwork observations (60 hours) and person-centered interviews (N=9). Emergent themes revealed that establishing trust, understanding the sensitivities of discussing obesity, and considering adolescent boys’ fears of sharing personal information may have enhanced recruitment success. Researchers should consider the importance of building relationships with professionals who can …

The Journal Project And The I In Qualitative Research: Three Theoretical Lenses On Subjectivity And Self, Judith Davidson Aug 2012

The Journal Project And The I In Qualitative Research: Three Theoretical Lenses On Subjectivity And Self, Judith Davidson

The Qualitative Report

From the beginnings of qualitative research in the late 19th century to today, researchers have struggled to make sense of the notion of self or subjectivity; in other words, the I in the research. We ask ourselves: Who is the researcher? How is their notion of self present during research? How is research a site for contested notions of self? Who is the I in qualitative research?

Is The Argentine Gov't Helping Or Hindering Energy Growth?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor Aug 2012

Is The Argentine Gov't Helping Or Hindering Energy Growth?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports

The Argentine government on July 27 announced a new energy investment plan that will increase government oversight of the sector, Reuters reported. Deputy Economy Minister Axel Kicillof will oversee a commission that evaluates the investment plans of private companies and will have the power to ask for changes or fine companies for failing to comply. What will be the practical implications of the decree? Will it spur growth in the long-struggling energy sector, as the government hopes, or scare off investors? Is Argentina's energy sector poised to do well considering the country's current economic situation?

Integrated Fiber Electrospinning: Creating Spatially Complex Electrospun Scaffolds With Minimal Delamination, Casey Grey Aug 2012

Integrated Fiber Electrospinning: Creating Spatially Complex Electrospun Scaffolds With Minimal Delamination, Casey Grey

Theses and Dissertations

Tissue engineering scaffolds come in many shapes and sizes, however, due to difficulty manufacturing the microstructure architecture required in tissue engineering, most scaffolds are architecturally non-dynamic in nature. Because the microstructural architecture of all biological tissues is inherently complicated, non-dynamic tissue engineering scaffolds tend to be a poor platform for tissue regeneration. The current method for manufacturing dynamic tissue engineering scaffolds involves electrospinning successive layers of different fibers, an approach that exhibits no fiber transition between layers and subsequent delamination problems. In this study we aim to address the design challenges of tissue engineering scaffolds through our novel integrated fiber …

Parameter Tuning For Optimization Software, Radhashilpa Koripalli Aug 2012

Parameter Tuning For Optimization Software, Radhashilpa Koripalli

Theses and Dissertations

Mixed integer programming (MIP) problems are highly parameterized, and finding parameter settings that achieve high performance for specific types of MIP instances is challenging. This paper presents a method to find the information about how CPLEX solver parameter settings perform for the different classes of mixed integer linear programs by using designed experiments and statistical models. Fitting a model through design of experiments helps in finding the optimal region across all combinations of parameter settings. The study involves recognizing the best parameter settings that results in the best performance for a specific class of instances. Choosing good setting has a …

The Effect Of Study Abroad On The Development Of Intercultural Sensitivity Among Mainland Chinese High School Students, Chenfang Hao Aug 2012

The Effect Of Study Abroad On The Development Of Intercultural Sensitivity Among Mainland Chinese High School Students, Chenfang Hao

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examined the effect of year-long study abroad program on the development of intercultural sensitivity among the Mainland Chinese high school students. The sample consisted of 50 study abroad participants and 50 students on home campus. The instrument Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) was employed to assess the intercultural sensitivity level of Mainland Chinese students before and after study abroad experience. The paired samples t-test results reveal that study abroad students did not make statistically significant gains in the overall intercultural sensitivity through participation in the year-long study abroad program. Although there were statistically significant differences in the posttest ethnorelative …

The Disappearing Provision: Medical Liability Reform Vanishes From The Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act Despite State Court Split, Rafael Andre Roberti Aug 2012

The Disappearing Provision: Medical Liability Reform Vanishes From The Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act Despite State Court Split, Rafael Andre Roberti

Legislation and Policy Brief

The legal and medical communities have debated the impact and necessity of medical liability reform for over twenty years. At the heart of the debate is the question of how to strike a balance between compensating patients and their families for the thousands of deaths and injuries resulting from medical errors that occur annually, and encouraging physicians to continue to care for patients across America. While several states have passed medical liability reform laws previously, on March 23, 2010, President Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA)—colloquially known as the “health care bill”—that contains provisions on medical …

The Future Of Limitless Debate: The Filibuster In The 113th Congress, Mark Kogan Aug 2012

The Future Of Limitless Debate: The Filibuster In The 113th Congress, Mark Kogan

Legislation and Policy Brief

Human cloning, the caning of teen vandals, and the belief that aliens descend from space to abduct humans and livestock all hold something in common: they are more popular than Congress. With the 112th Congress bottoming out at a record-low 9% approval rating, it is clear that Americans are deeply unsatisfied with the gridlock gripping Washington. While it is popular, and even easy, to lambaste Republicans for blanket obstructionism and to condemn Democrats for failure to stand up to minority bullying, collective blame shifting will not breach the dam of a hyper-partisan Congress. Instead, individuals hoping to get Congress moving …

Finding Safe Harbor: Protection, Prosecution, And State Strategies To Address Prostituted Minors, Darren Geist Aug 2012

Finding Safe Harbor: Protection, Prosecution, And State Strategies To Address Prostituted Minors, Darren Geist

Legislation and Policy Brief

The common policy of treating sexually exploited minors as criminals represents a fundamental failing of the justice system. Prostituted minors should not be treated as delinquents requiring discipline but rather as severely traumatized and abused victims requiring specialized services and counseling. Yet, in most states, prostituted minors are re-traumatized through arrest, prosecution, and detention instead of receiving specialized services. Besides being unjust, this policy is counter-productive. Arresting, prosecuting, and detaining minors hinders law enforcement efforts to go after the real criminals – the pimps and the johns, and misses an important opportunity to rescue minors from a system of commercial …

In Defense Of The Obama Administration's Non-Defense Of Doma, Daniel J. Crooks Iii Aug 2012

In Defense Of The Obama Administration's Non-Defense Of Doma, Daniel J. Crooks Iii

Legislation and Policy Brief

The Constitution charges the President with the duty to “take Care that the Laws be faithfully executed . . . .” Moreover, the President takes an oath to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” Although “[g]enerally, these duties are compatible . . ., when the Executive faces a law that he believes is unconstitutional, he must decide whether the law should be executed as written and defended if attacked, or whether the duty of faithfulness to the Constitution requires its repudiation.” This decision belongs to the President alone as the head of a co-equal branch of …

Making The Case For Wilderness: The Bureau Of Land Management’S Wild Lands Policy And Its Role In The Storied History Of Wilderness Protection, Maureen O’Dea Brill Aug 2012

Making The Case For Wilderness: The Bureau Of Land Management’S Wild Lands Policy And Its Role In The Storied History Of Wilderness Protection, Maureen O’Dea Brill

Legislation and Policy Brief

On December 23, 2010, the Secretary of the Department of the Interior, Ken Salazar, issued Secretarial Order No. 3310, commonly referred to as the Wild Lands Policy. The Wild Lands Policy established a two-step process through which the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), an agency within the Department of the Interior, was to inventory and to manage its lands with wilderness characteristics (LWCs). The policy continued the requirement that the BLM maintain a current inventory of LWCs and evaluate these LWCs during the previously established land use planning process. The Wild Lands Policy further required that the BLM protect LWCs …

Seeking Stability In An Oily World: The Gulf War And American Imperialism, Kate Keleher Aug 2012

Seeking Stability In An Oily World: The Gulf War And American Imperialism, Kate Keleher

The Macalester Review

Oil has profoundly shaped the political, economic, and social structures of the twentieth century and it continues to shape the global order today. As both a source and a medium of power, oil binds together seemingly disparate elements into a highly sensitive web. This paper examines the first Gulf War as a turning point in the narrative of oil and power. The United States’ engagement in the Gulf War reasserted American dominance over the Middle East and ushered in a new era of oil security. In the war’s aftermath, the United States assumed roles that indicate an agenda of new …

Social Movements And Free Riders: Examining Resource Mobilization Theory Through The Bolivian Water War, J.P. Weismuller Aug 2012

Social Movements And Free Riders: Examining Resource Mobilization Theory Through The Bolivian Water War, J.P. Weismuller

The Macalester Review

Mancur Olson's free rider problem suggests that self-interested individuals would be more rational to abstain from rather than participate in collective action. This possibility is particularly problematic for social movement theories attempting to account for movement emergence. In this essay, I critique resource mobilization theory's solution to Olson's problem, arguing that its "elite support hypothesis" cannot account for the emergence of entirely grassroots movements. However, through an analysis of the Bolivian Water War, I ultimately suggest that resource mobilization theory can be salvaged. I claim that a distinction between "vertical" and "horizontal" organizations allows resource mobilization theory to maintain its …

An Analysis Of The Career Length Of Professional Basketball Players, Kwame D. Fynn, Morgan Sonnenschein Aug 2012

An Analysis Of The Career Length Of Professional Basketball Players, Kwame D. Fynn, Morgan Sonnenschein

The Macalester Review

An interesting problem in professional basketball is predicting how long a player remains in the NBA League. Previous research on this problem has focused on factors such as race, performance in games, and size. We propose to analyze career duration in the NBA based on awards won, position played and biological variables such as height. Using Accelerated Failure Time models, Cox Proportional Hazards models and Kaplan-Meier analyses, we determine that both height and number of awards won lengthen career duration; however, only certain player positions significantly affect career length of a player.

Does The Equity Market Affect Economic Growth?, Kwame D. Fynn

The Macalester Review

This paper examines the impact of the stock market primarily on economic growth using panel data from 1990-2010. I apply Generalized Least Squares techniques for fixed effects with the exclusion of the subgroup 2005-2010 which uses random effects. The effect of the stock market on growth is based on country-specific effects and varies in different time periods.

Empirical Model For The Transconductance-Current Dependence Of Short-Channel Mosfets, Vladimir I. Prodanov Aug 2012

Empirical Model For The Transconductance-Current Dependence Of Short-Channel Mosfets, Vladimir I. Prodanov

Electrical Engineering

This work is concerned with the gm-I dependence of sub-micrometer MOSFETs. The transconductance-current expression given by the Advanced Compact Model (ACM) is reviewed and simple modification is proposed. The modification yields an expression which (with proper parametrization) captures the gm-I dependence of short-channel MOSFETs. The proposed expression is “universal” in the sense that it is capable of modeling the gm-I dependence of long-channel MOSFETs, short-channel MOSFETs, and resistively-degenerated BJTs.

Last Day & Farewell... Sort Of!, Emily A. Francisco

Blogging the Library

My summer internship experience at the library is officially done. It’s odd to think about just how much I’ve accomplished this summer—I’ve researched Civil War genre painters, learned about nineteenth-century sheet music, installed frames, arranged Union soldiers’ swords—the list goes on. I truly am fortunate to have had such a unique and stimulating experience this summer. [excerpt]

Design Of Wideband Continuous-Time Δς Adcs Using Two-Step Quantizers, Sakkarapani Balagopal, Vishal Saxena Aug 2012

Design Of Wideband Continuous-Time Δς Adcs Using Two-Step Quantizers, Sakkarapani Balagopal, Vishal Saxena

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Continuous-time delta sigma (CT-ΔΣ) ADCs are established as the data conversion architecture of choice for the next-generation wireless applications. Several efforts have been made to simultaneously improve the bandwidth and dynamic range of ΔΣ ADCs. We proposed using two-step quantizer in a single-loop CT-ΔΣ modulator to achieve higher conversion bandwidth. This paper presents a tutorial for employing the design technique through a 130n CMOS implementation. The proposed 640 MS/s, 4th order continuous-time delta sigma modulator (CT-ΔΣM) incorporates a two-step 5-bit quantizer, consisting of only 13 comparators. The CT-ΔΣM achieves a dynamic range of 70 dB, peak SNDR of 65.3 …

A 1 Gs/S, 31 Mhz Bw, 76.3 Db Dynamic Range, 34 Mw Ct-Δς Adc With 1.5 Cycle Quantizer Delay And Improved Stf, Sakkarapani Balagopal, Vishal Saxena Aug 2012

A 1 Gs/S, 31 Mhz Bw, 76.3 Db Dynamic Range, 34 Mw Ct-Δς Adc With 1.5 Cycle Quantizer Delay And Improved Stf, Sakkarapani Balagopal, Vishal Saxena

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

A 1 GS/s Continuous-time Delta-Sigma modulator (CT-ΔΣM) with 31 MHz bandwidth, 76.3 dB dynamic range and 72.5 dB signal-to-noise is reported in a 0.13μm CMOS technology. The design employs an excess loop delay (ELD) of more than one clock cycle for achieving higher sampling rate. The ELD is compensated using a fast-loop formed around the last integrator by using a sample-and-hold. Further, the effect of this ELD compensation scheme on the signal transfer function (STF) of a feedforward CT-ΔΣ architecture has been analyzed and reported. In this work, an improved STF is achieved by using a combination of feed-forward, feed-back …
