On Order Statistics For Gs-Distributions, M. M. Mohie El-Din, M. M. Amein, Gholamhossein Hamedani

Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

In this article, a class of distributions is used to establish several recurrence relations satisfied by single and product moments of order statistics and progressive Type-II right censoring. The recurrence relations for moments of some specific distributions including uniform (a, b); exponential (λ); generalized exponential (α, λ, ν); beta (1, b); beta (b, 1); logistic (α, β) and other distributions from order statistics and progressive Type-II right censoring can be obtained as special cases. A short explanation of GS-distribution can be found in reference [27]. As an example, means, variances and covariances …

False Negatives, Steven Luper Sep 2012

False Negatives, Steven Luper

Philosophy Faculty Research

In Philosophical Explanations, Robert Nozick suggested that knowing that some proposition, p, is true is a matter of being “sensitive” to p’s truth-value. It requires that one’s belief state concerning p vary appropriately with the truth-value of p as the latter shifts in relevant possible worlds. Nozick fleshed out this sketchy view with a specific analysis of what sensitivity entails. Famously, he drew upon this analysis in order to explain how common-sense knowledge claims, such as my claim to know I have hands, are true, even though we do not know that skeptical hypotheses are false. His …

Analysis Of Traffic Crash Data In Kentucky (2007-2011), Eric R. Green, Kenneth R. Agent, Jerry G. Pigman Sep 2012

Analysis Of Traffic Crash Data In Kentucky (2007-2011), Eric R. Green, Kenneth R. Agent, Jerry G. Pigman

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This report documents an analysis of traffic crash data in Kentucky for the years of 2007 through 2011. A primary objective of this study was to determine average crash statistics for Kentucky highways. Average and critical numbers and rates of crashes were calculated for various types of highways in rural and urban areas. These data can be used in Kentucky’s procedure to identify locations that have abnormal rates or numbers of crashes.

A Model Order Reduction Method For Lightly Damped State Space Systems, Matthew Cappello Sep 2012

A Model Order Reduction Method For Lightly Damped State Space Systems, Matthew Cappello

Theses

This paper introduces a model order reduction method that takes advantage of the near orthogonality of lightly damped modes in a system and the modal separation of diagonalized models to reduce the model order of flexible systems in both continuous and discrete time. The reduction method is computationally fast and cheap, not requiring any singular value decompositions or large matrix operations. Numeric solutions to the infinite time Lyapunov equations are presented, and used to solve for the observability and controllability grammians of diagonalized models. Four different modal importance calculations are produced from the diagonalized model's grammians and are compared to …

Analysis And Application Of A Free Energy Model For Lens Protein Mixtures, Michael Bell Sep 2012

Analysis And Application Of A Free Energy Model For Lens Protein Mixtures, Michael Bell

Theses

Cataract, the leading cause of blindness worldwide, has motivated a variety of investigations into the behavior of concentrated mixtures of eye lens proteins. While there has been success in modeling single protein solutions, a convenient model for mixtures is needed. We apply an analytically solvable sticky-hard sphere model to aqueous mixtures of alpha and gamma crystallin, two of the predominant proteins found in the mammalian eye lens. Developed by Baxter and Barboy, this model incorporates some of the fundamental characteristics of realistic mixtures, namely, variation in size and intermolecular attraction strength among each component. We show that light scattering intensities …

A Visualization Of A New Conceptual Sustainable Building Using Green Materials, Tzu-Fang Tseng Sep 2012

A Visualization Of A New Conceptual Sustainable Building Using Green Materials, Tzu-Fang Tseng

Theses

The project was inspired by a 9-story building constructed from plastic bottles, which was hailed as a spectacular showpiece for the Taipei International Flora Expo. This building weighs 50 percent less than a conventional structure. It is reconfigurable, energy saving and very low in CO2. The main intent of the project is to utilize a surreal story in an animation to illustrate the concept of reusing hundreds of thousands of old bottles around the world is a new green method of building which is one way to protect our planet. The resulting product is a short film that can be …

Structure-Miscibility Relationships In Weakly Interacting Polymer Blends, Theresa Hendrick Sep 2012

Structure-Miscibility Relationships In Weakly Interacting Polymer Blends, Theresa Hendrick

Theses

In the present research, the relationship between blend miscibility and constituent polymer structure was established. This work examines a series of blends of polyesters (PE's) and polycarbonates (PC's) having systematic variations in aliphatic and aromatic structural group content to establish how miscibility and phase behavior depend on polymer structure. The blends were prepared by solution blending and precipitating, while the polymer blend miscibility and phase behavior were characterized through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The glass transition temperatures (Tg) of the individual polymers and blends were measured. The polyesters and polycarbonates explored in this research were 4MC-PC (Tg = 135.2°C), BPA-TMC-PC …

Bayesian Speaker Adaptation Based On A New Hierarchical Probabilistic Model, Wen-Lin Zhang, Wei-Qiang Zhang, Bi-Cheng Li, Dan Qu, Michael T. Johnson Sep 2012

Bayesian Speaker Adaptation Based On A New Hierarchical Probabilistic Model, Wen-Lin Zhang, Wei-Qiang Zhang, Bi-Cheng Li, Dan Qu, Michael T. Johnson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

In this paper, a new hierarchical Bayesian speaker adaptation method called HMAP is proposed that combines the advantages of three conventional algorithms, maximum a posteriori (MAP), maximum-likelihood linear regression (MLLR), and eigenvoice, resulting in excellent performance across a wide range of adaptation conditions. The new method efficiently utilizes intra-speaker and inter-speaker correlation information through modeling phone and speaker subspaces in a consistent hierarchical Bayesian way. The phone variations for a specific speaker are assumed to be located in a low-dimensional subspace. The phone coordinate, which is shared among different speakers, implicitly contains the intra-speaker correlation information. For a specific speaker, …

Community Supported Agriculture Program Consumer Preferences For Local And Organic Foods, Kynda Curtis, Voravee Chakreeyarat, J. Dominique Gumirakiza

All Current Publications

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs started in the United States in the 1980s. The basic concept of the CSA program is to form partnerships between consumers and farmers where consumers pay for farm products (or shares) in advance and farmers commit to supplying a sufficient quantity, quality, and variety of products across the season.

The domestic dog offers a unique opportunity to study complex disorders similar to those seen in humans, but within the context of the much simpler genetic backgrounds of pure breeds, which represent closed populations. We performed a whole-genome search for genetic risk factors of adult-onset deafness in the Border Collie, a breed of herding dog that relies on acute hearing to perceive and respond to commands while working. Adult-onset deafness in Border Collies typically begins in early adulthood and is similar to age-related hearing loss in humans. This earlier onset has particular impact on the utility of working Border Collies …
