A Comparison Of Broad Iron Emission Lines In Archival Data Of Neutron Star Low-Mass X-Ray Binaries, Edward M. Cackett, Jon M. Miller, Rubens C. Reis, Andrew C. Fabian, Didier Barret Aug 2012

A Comparison Of Broad Iron Emission Lines In Archival Data Of Neutron Star Low-Mass X-Ray Binaries, Edward M. Cackett, Jon M. Miller, Rubens C. Reis, Andrew C. Fabian, Didier Barret

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research Publications

Relativistic X-ray disklines have been found in multiple neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries, in close analogy with black holes across the mass scale. These lines have tremendous diagnostic power and have been used to constrain stellar radii and magnetic fields, often finding values that are consistent with independent timing techniques. Here, we compare CCD-based data from Suzaku with Fe K line profiles from archival data taken with gas-based spectrometers. In general, we find good consistency between the gas-based line profiles from EXOSAT, BeppoSAX, and RXTE and the CCD data from Suzaku, demonstrating that the broad profiles seen are intrinsic to …

A Futurist’S Perspective On Consciousness And The Information Economy, Joseph A. Santiago Aug 2012

A Futurist’S Perspective On Consciousness And The Information Economy, Joseph A. Santiago

Digital Community Voices Committee

Companies today are seeking to tie data into everything from hiring and firing decisions, to strategic planning, to market positioning IT policies, and they are monitoring the feedback to those actions. I believe that the information economy has already become a global race and an industry that is rarely understood or talked about today in America for the general populous. I believe the future holds many opportunities for open source projects. Within ten to twenty years individuals will search through their environment in a manner similar to how they search via the web today. Cognitive computing will rapidly advance how …

Quantitative Evaluation Of Reciprocal Herkogamy In The Distylous Species, Hedyotis Caerulea (Rubiaceae), Dennis A. Sampson, Robert A. Krebs Aug 2012

Quantitative Evaluation Of Reciprocal Herkogamy In The Distylous Species, Hedyotis Caerulea (Rubiaceae), Dennis A. Sampson, Robert A. Krebs

Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications

Hedyotis caerulea possesses two distinct floral morphs that are generally found in equal numbers in naturally occurring populations. Flowers either possess a relatively long style and short anthers, called a “pin,” or a short style and long anthers, called a “thrum.” This placement of reproductive organs is considered herkogamous and distylous, as it encourages outcrossing by restricting pollination to individuals of the alternate morph. Numerous species have been described as distylous without quantitative data establishing stigma-anther reciprocity. Here we assess those assumptions in H. caerulea by measuring stigma height, anther height and a suite of additional floral traits across multiple …

Historic Preservation At Nevada City, Montana, Paul Hart Aug 2012

Historic Preservation At Nevada City, Montana, Paul Hart

Trades and Technical

Primary emphasis this summer was placed on restoring the Richards Cabin however, the first week was spent priming and painting the interior of the Iron Rod Post Office. All the buildings within the Nevada City Outdoor Museum complex are historically significant, some more than others. Some have been used as sets on major Hollywood productions such as, "The MissouriBreaks"," Little Big Man", "Return to Lonesome Dove", "Thousand Pieces of Gold" and "The Left Handed Gun". Others have more historical significance. Some are from Yellowstone National Park. One specifically built for a County Sheriff's Department eventually accommodated a legal …

Dance/Movement Therapy And Autism: A Case Study, Katherine Ann Porter

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

This thesis explores the development of the therapeutic relationship with a child with autism through dance/movement therapy. The characteristics of Autism Spectrum Disorder effect social interactions, communication, behavior and interests. This means there is difficulty engaging and maintaining reciprocal social interactions, and trouble with receptive and expressive language. The purpose of this study is to describe how movement mirroring in dance/movement therapy affects the development of the therapeutic relationship with a child with autism, through the analysis of the Ways of Seeing approach.

The data collected in this clinical case study consisted of video tapped sessions and Laban Movement Analysis …

Pricing In Online Auction Procurement: A Review Of Empirical Methods And Current Understandings, Ming Zhou, William Y. Jiang, M. Cao Aug 2012

Pricing In Online Auction Procurement: A Review Of Empirical Methods And Current Understandings, Ming Zhou, William Y. Jiang, M. Cao

Faculty Publications, School of Management

The online auction has become an important channel for procurement and sourcing management. As firms often expect lower procurement prices through online auctions, how the prices are determined in online auctions should be of major interest to procurement managers and supply chain researchers. Despite the abundant empirical studies on online auction prices, an aggregated view is still absent. This study fills this gap with a review of extant studies. More specifically, this study provides summaries of all major theories behind online auction pricing, defines and analyzes often encountered econometric issues, and discusses how the treatments of these issues have been …

Adult Learner Considerations In Admissions And Enrollment, Tammy R. Johnson, Sonja G. Cantrell Aug 2012

Adult Learner Considerations In Admissions And Enrollment, Tammy R. Johnson, Sonja G. Cantrell

Admissions Faculty Research

As national focus on retention and student success increases, many states and institutions are looking for ways to increase the number of students who ultimately earn degrees. Many are realizing that the non-traditional adult student population is a historically untapped demographic that can provide almost instant, positive changes in graduation rates. This group is often considered low-hanging fruit and can be targeted to quickly complete unfinished degrees. This is especially true for institutions that have a large number of non-completers with high numbers of earned hours. Many non-returners have 90 or more earned hours and simply need some encouragement and …

Exploring The International Union For The Conservation Of Nature (Iucn's) National Program Development In Biodiversity Conservation: A Comparative Study Of India, Pakistan, Nepal, And Bangladesh, Medani Prasad Bhandari Aug 2012

Exploring The International Union For The Conservation Of Nature (Iucn's) National Program Development In Biodiversity Conservation: A Comparative Study Of India, Pakistan, Nepal, And Bangladesh, Medani Prasad Bhandari

Sociology - Dissertations

This dissertation investigates IUCN's role in global biodiversity conservation policy as well as in national program development in India, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh. It explores how nature protection priorities and approaches are promoted or addressed by IUCN, an international organization, and how environment conservation policies are created and maintained in states with different capacities of South Asia. This study is the first detailed scholarly study on the IUCN as an organization as well as on its efforts in biodiversity conservation.

This research adds to our knowledge firstly by contributing to a small but growing body of work on the sociology …

Managing The Divine Jurisdiction: Sacred Space And The Limits Of Law On The Temple Mount (1917-1948), Robert W. Nicholson Aug 2012

Managing The Divine Jurisdiction: Sacred Space And The Limits Of Law On The Temple Mount (1917-1948), Robert W. Nicholson

History - Theses

This paper probes the history of the Temple Mount complex during the British Mandate for Palestine. Approaching this sacred space from three different perspectives--British, Arab, and Jewish--the paper examines how people and events surrounding the site contributed to the evolution of Palestine after World War I. Ultimately, I argue that Britain's non-policy on the Temple Mount undermined the Mandate project and ultimately contributed to the rise of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Fearful of angering Muslims in Palestine and around the world, the British handed control of the space to an indigenous Arab-Muslim administration. This policy of "affirmative deference" allowed certain Muslim …

Generality Of Treatment Effects: Evaluating Elementary-Aged Students' Abilities To Generalize And Maintain Fluency Gains Of A Performance Feedback Writing Intervention, Bridget Hier Aug 2012

Generality Of Treatment Effects: Evaluating Elementary-Aged Students' Abilities To Generalize And Maintain Fluency Gains Of A Performance Feedback Writing Intervention, Bridget Hier

Psychology - Theses

Although writing ability is a skill that has been argued to be equally important as reading skills in the development of early literacy and is necessary for academic success (Berninger et al., 2006; Graham, MacArthur, & Fitzgerald, 2007), national estimates of students' writing ability in the United States indicate that in 2002, 72% of elementary-aged students were unable to write with grade-level proficiency (Persky, Daane, & Jin, 2003). This finding presents a clear need for empirical, evidence-based interventions that aim to improve students' writing skills, and performance feedback is one type of intervention that has been shown to do so …

Ideology, Truthmaking And Fundamentality, Anthony Robert James Fisher Aug 2012

Ideology, Truthmaking And Fundamentality, Anthony Robert James Fisher

Philosophy - Dissertations

In chapter 1 I outline two conceptions of ideology: ideological pessimism and ideological realism. Ideological pessimism is the view that ideological inquiry has dim prospects insofar as ideology is tied to meaning. Ideological realism is the view that there is a fact of the matter about which ideology is taken as primitive when attempting to describe reality correctly. I respond to an argument on behalf of ideological pessimism, develop ideological realism, and then defend it against an objection that attempts to derive the unpalatable consequence that a main dispute in the metaphysics of properties is verbal.

In chapter 2 I …

Covalent Modification That Enhances Protein Properties And Functions And Folds Random Coil Into Alpha-Helix, Deepali Prashar Aug 2012

Covalent Modification That Enhances Protein Properties And Functions And Folds Random Coil Into Alpha-Helix, Deepali Prashar

Chemistry - Dissertations

Understanding the fundamental science of aggregation and surface adsorption of proteins is critical for developing protein-based drugs, understanding aggregation-induced diseases and for preventing biofouling that impacts a wide range of industries. In spite of the advances in sensitive and high-throughput analytical methods, the commercialization of protein drugs has been impeded by poor solubility, inevitable aggregation, and difficulty in purification. The primary aim of this dissertation is to modify proteins covalently to induce folding in random coil sequences, prevent aggregation, surface adsorption and for increasing the thermal stability against aggregation of proteins.

The first chapter describes the chemistry for modifying the …

Exploring Policies Of Spirituality Among College Students, Afton N. Kapuscinski Aug 2012

Exploring Policies Of Spirituality Among College Students, Afton N. Kapuscinski

Psychology - Dissertations

Though psychologists' interest in the empirical study of spirituality has resurfaced, diverging opinions regarding the meaning of the construct among both researchers and the general public pose a serious challenge to research. To expand knowledge regarding how individuals implicitly define the term, an idiographic, experimental approach called policy-capturing was utilized to determine what factors college students take into consideration when making determinations about others' spirituality. Participants were exposed to a series of 50 profiles describing hypothetical people, each of which contained a unique combination of different levels of five factors believed to characterize spirituality by researchers. Participants rated each profile …

Hiv-Related Stigmatization In Treatment Settings: Effects On Patient Comfort, Risk Disclosure, And Treatment Decisions, Jessica Deanne Naughton Aug 2012

Hiv-Related Stigmatization In Treatment Settings: Effects On Patient Comfort, Risk Disclosure, And Treatment Decisions, Jessica Deanne Naughton

Psychology - Dissertations

The major focus for the present study was to examine the effects of provider stigmatization on the medical care of HIV+ patients, by using an experimental paradigm and examining a conceptual framework to clarify the relationship between provider stigmatization and negative treatment outcomes. Initial qualitative findings from focus groups (n = 18) indicated that several key elements of stigmatizing treatment experiences included judgmental and condescending language, patient avoidance, increased physical distance between patient and provider during conversations and procedures, and use of extra, unnecessary precautions (e.g. use of extra gloves, masks). These provider behaviors were experimentally manipulated and incorporated into …
