The Lick–Carnegie Survey: A New Two-Planet System Around The Star Hd 207832, Nader Haghighipour, R. Paul Butler, Eugenio J. Rivera, Gregory W. Henry, Steve Vogt

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

Keck/HIRES precision radial velocities of HD 207832 indicate the presence of two Jovian-type planetary companions in Keplerian orbits around this G star. The planets have minimum masses of Msin i = 0.56 MJup and 0.73 MJup, with orbital periods of ∼162 and ∼1156 days, and eccentricities of 0.13 and 0.27, respectively. Strömgren b and y photometry reveals a clear stellar rotation signature of the host star with a period of 17.8 days, well separated from the period of the radial velocity variations, reinforcing their Keplerian origin. The values of the semimajor axes of the planets suggest that these objects have …

Crossfit Effectiveness On Fitness Levels And Demonstration Of Successful Program Objectives, Christine Jeffery Aug 2012

Crossfit Effectiveness On Fitness Levels And Demonstration Of Successful Program Objectives, Christine Jeffery

Student Theses and Dissertations

CrossFit is a core strength and conditioning program created by Greg Glassman which adheres to three fitness standards: 1) there are ten general physical skills, 2) concept of a "hopper", i.e. being able to perform any skill when asked, and 3) training must occur is all three metabolic pathways, ATP-PCr, glycolytic, & aerobic systems. The purpose of this study was to first assess CrossFit effectiveness and also evaluate the third fitness standard through indirect measures. Thirty seven participants, both male and female participated in the study. Participants were divided based on questionnaire results into two groups, CrossFit and control (follow …

Nearness To Local Subspace Algorithm For Subspace And Motion Segmentation, Akram Aldroubi, Ali Safak Sekmen Aug 2012

Nearness To Local Subspace Algorithm For Subspace And Motion Segmentation, Akram Aldroubi, Ali Safak Sekmen

Computer Science Faculty Research

This letter presents a clustering algorithm for high dimensional data that comes from a union of lower dimensional subspaces of equal and known dimensions. The algorithm estimates a local subspace for each data point, and computes the distances between the local subspaces and the points to convert the problem to a one-dimensional data clustering problem. The algorithm is reliable in the presence of noise, and applied to the Hopkins 155 Dataset, it generates the best results to date for motion segmentation. The two motion, three motion, and overall segmentation rates for the video sequences are 99.43%, 98.69%, and 99.24%, respectively.

Using Computer-Assisted Graphic Organizers In Algebra Instruction To Support High School Students With Learning Disabilities, Katherine Rimby

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was: 1) to examine the effect of the use of graphic organizers in high school algebra instruction; 2) to compare the difference of student performance when hand-written and computer-assisted graphic organizers were used, and 3) to evaluate student attitude towards learning algebra when hand-written and computer-assisted graphic organizers were used. A total of eight high school students with LD in two classes, with four in each class, participated in this study. A single subject design with AB and ABC phases was used in this study for 10 weeks, during which eight Algebraic math skills were …

Engineering Residential Learning Communities: Evaluating The Impact On Freshmen Engineering Students, Margaret Flynn Aug 2012

Engineering Residential Learning Communities: Evaluating The Impact On Freshmen Engineering Students, Margaret Flynn

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of an engineering living-learning community (ELLC) on freshmen enginering students. A control group of non-ELLC participants was used to compare the experiences of the ELLC students. Data were collected using Likert scale survey items and open-ended questions. Analysis of the survey data showed that there were significant differences between the ELLC students and non-ELLC students in how they responded to questions regarding social support, academic support, connectedness to campus, and satisfaction with the college of engineering and Rowan University. A focus group of ELLC participants was also conducted to get …

Electron Band Alignment At The Interface Of (100)Insb With Atomic-Layer Deposited Al2o3, H.Y. Chou, V. V. Afanas'ev, M. Houssa, A. Stesmans, Lin Dong, Peide Ye Aug 2012

Electron Band Alignment At The Interface Of (100)Insb With Atomic-Layer Deposited Al2o3, H.Y. Chou, V. V. Afanas'ev, M. Houssa, A. Stesmans, Lin Dong, Peide Ye

Birck and NCN Publications

From experiments on internal photoemission of electrons at the (100)InSb/Al2O3 interface, the top of the InSb valence band is found to be 3.05 +/- 0.10 eV below the oxide conduction band and corresponds to a conduction band offset of 2.9 +/- 0.1 eV. These results indicate that the top of valence band in InSb lies energetically at the same level as in GaSb and above the valence bands in InxGa1-xAs (0
