Mammalian Per2 Regulates Akt Activation And Dna Damage Response, Xiaoming Yang, Xuezhong He, Zhengguan Yang, Esmaiel Jabbari Aug 2012

Mammalian Per2 Regulates Akt Activation And Dna Damage Response, Xiaoming Yang, Xuezhong He, Zhengguan Yang, Esmaiel Jabbari

Faculty Publications

PER2 is a key mammalian circadian clock protein. It also has a tumor suppressive function. Down regulation of PER2 in the cultured cancer cells accelerates cell proliferation, while overexpression of PER2 inhibits cell growth and induces apoptosis. The Per2 mutant mice have a cancer prone phenotype and an altered DNA damage response. Here we report that PER2 regulates AKT activity. Cells with down-regulated PER2 expression have prolonged high levels of AKT T308 phosphorylation after growth factor stimulation or DNA damage. PER2 down-regulation delays DNA damage induced Chk2 activation and overrides DNA damage induced apoptosis and cell cycle arrest.

Role Of Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors In Experimental Colitis, Shakir Alsharari Aug 2012

Role Of Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors In Experimental Colitis, Shakir Alsharari

Theses and Dissertations

Substantial evidence in the literature shows that tobacco smoking has complex and divergent effects on inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). It ameliorates ulcerative colitis (UC); whereas it aggravates the risk of Crohn’s disease (CD) and affects the disease course and severity. Studies have shown that nicotine has a positive influence on symptoms of UC. Also, it is demonstrated that nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, especially α7 subunit plays an essential component in the vagus nerve-based cholinergic anti-inflammatory effects. In the present study, we explored the effect of nicotine and α7 nicotinic agonists treatment in the DSS colitis mouse model. We also investigated the …

Franco's Children: Representations Of Franco-Era Childhood In Contemporary Spanish Literature And Cinema, Miaowei Weng Aug 2012

Franco's Children: Representations Of Franco-Era Childhood In Contemporary Spanish Literature And Cinema, Miaowei Weng

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This study explores the politicization of "Franco's children" in El sur : 1981;1983), El florido pensil : 1994), Habíamos ganado la guerra: 2007), and La gloria de los niños: 2007). The phrase "Franco's children," on the one hand, implies the status of the authors and filmmakers as those who survived the early Franco regime as children and recall their childhood as adults; on the other hand, it refers to the child protagonists in the selected works that are set in wartime and the post-War period. The aim of the present study is to explore different strategies - both rhetorical and …

Evaluating Merger Enforcement During The Obama Administration, Jonathan Baker, Carl Shapiro Aug 2012

Evaluating Merger Enforcement During The Obama Administration, Jonathan Baker, Carl Shapiro

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

We recently concluded that government merger enforcement statistics "provide clear evidence that the Obama Administration reinvigorated merger enforcement, as it set out to do." Three weeks later, in an article published in the Stanford Law Review Online, Professor Daniel A. Crane reached the opposite conclusion, claiming that "[t]he merger statistics do not evidence 'reinvigoration' of merger enforcement under Obama."

Prospects And Challenges Of Prison Libraries In Ghana: A Case Study Of The Nsawam Medium Security Prisons., Christopher Mfum Aug 2012

Prospects And Challenges Of Prison Libraries In Ghana: A Case Study Of The Nsawam Medium Security Prisons., Christopher Mfum

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

ABSTRACT

The study explored the provision of library services at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison in Ghana. Incarcerated people are confronted with isolation and are often faced with limitations of personal choices and quality decision making. Library services remain an important service in every society that values freedom. The prison library is one of the few places that offer solace and escape in the extremely regulated lives of prisoners. The report is the result of a study into the information needs of prisoners and the resources and services that are available for this special population. A total of 100 male …

A Case For Undocumented Students In Higher Education: The Pursuit Of Social Justice In Oregon Senate Bill 742, Clara Martinez Aug 2012

A Case For Undocumented Students In Higher Education: The Pursuit Of Social Justice In Oregon Senate Bill 742, Clara Martinez

Quercus: Linfield Journal of Undergraduate Research

Should undocumented students be able to pay resident tuition rates at public universities? In the spring of 2011, the Oregon Senate introduced Senate Bill 742. The bill would allow undocumented students to pay resident tuition rates at the state's seven public universities. This article presents philosophical arguments in support of the bill by using the ideologies outlined in egalitarian and communitarian ideas. Moreover, the liberal ideas of political philosophers Robert Nozick and Friedrich Hayek present counterarguments to my thesis. Senate Bill 742 could help to rectify the injustice inherent in the college admissions system.
