In Vitro Cytotoxicity And Skin Irritation Testing Of Antimicrobial Conjugated Electrolytes : Interactions With Mammalian Cells, Kristin N. Wilde Aug 2012

In Vitro Cytotoxicity And Skin Irritation Testing Of Antimicrobial Conjugated Electrolytes : Interactions With Mammalian Cells, Kristin N. Wilde

Chemical and Biological Engineering ETDs

An estimated 19,000 deaths and $3-4 billion in health care costs per year in the U.S. are attributed to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections. Certain cationic phenylene ethynylene (CPE)-based polymers (PPEs) and oligomers (OPEs) have been demonstrated to exhibit dark and light-activated antimicrobial activity. Envisioned applications of these CPEs include the fabrication of antimicrobial surfaces to reduce or prevent the spread of potentially untreatable strains of bacteria. Until recently, it was unknown if the polymers or oligomers would exhibit similar biocidal activity toward mammalian cells. This work examines the toxicity of CPEs to mammalian cells at three levels: cytoxicity testing …

Dartmouth Scholarship

Transmission of HIV-1 during breastfeeding is a significant source of new pediatric infections in sub-Saharan Africa. Breast milk from HIV-positive mothers contains both cell-free and cell-associated virus; however, the impact of breast milk on HIV-1 infectivity remains poorly understood. In the present study, breast milk was collected from HIV-positive and HIV-negative Tanzanian women attending antenatal clinics in Dar es Salaam. Milk was analyzed for activity in vitro against both cell-free and cell-associated HIV-1. Potent inhibition of cell-free R5 and X4 HIV-1 occurred in the presence of milk from all donors regardless of HIV-1 serostatus. Inhibition of cell-free HIV-1 infection positively …

Surfactant Incorporated Nanostructure For Pressure Drop Reduction In Oil And Gas Lines [Div], Sudipta Seal, Sameer Deshpande, Paul Jepson, Suresh Kuiry, Patil Swanand

UCF Patents

Nano-sized rare earth metal oxide particles are prepared from aqueous reverse micelles. The engineered nanoparticles have large surface area to volume ratios, and uniformly incorporate a surfactant in each particle, so that when applied to the inner surface of a pipeline or sprayed onto a fluid stream in a pipeline, the particles reduce the roughness of the inside surface of pipe being used to transport fluid. The application of a nanolayer of this novel nanoceria mixture causes a significant reduction in pressure drops, friction, and better recovery and yield of fluid flowing through a pipeline.

The Visual Exchange: The Intersection Of Vision, Gender, And Empire In Nineteenth-Century British Literature, Stacey L. Kikendall Aug 2012

The Visual Exchange: The Intersection Of Vision, Gender, And Empire In Nineteenth-Century British Literature, Stacey L. Kikendall

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation examines key moments in fictional and autobiographical texts when gender construction and colonization intersect and create the possibility for reciprocal visual exchange between disparate people. In a visual exchange, the participants actively and meaningfully look at one another, at the same time acknowledging the others subjectivity. I argue that these moments hint at the subliminal utopian desire by the author, and perhaps the reader, for a more equal, even democratic, community. I study a range of texts written during the long nineteenth century by male and female authors, including Sydney Owenson's The Wild Irish Girl (1806), The History …

Experimental Determination Of Pka Values By Use Of Nmr Chemical Shifts, Revisited, Alan D. Gift Aug 2012

Experimental Determination Of Pka Values By Use Of Nmr Chemical Shifts, Revisited, Alan D. Gift

Chemistry Faculty Publications

This laboratory experiment, using proton NMR spectroscopy to determine the dissociation constant for heterocyclic bases, has been modified from a previously described experiment. A solution of a substituted pyridine is prepared using deuterium oxide (D2O) as the solvent. The pH of the solution is adjusted and proton NMR spectra are collected for a variety of pH values. The chemical shifts of the peaks in the NMR spectrum change depending on the degree of protonation of the pyridine ring. Analysis of the spectral data is used to calculate the dissociation constant of the substituted pyridine. This experiment is suitable for a …

Identification Of The Functional Binding Pocket For Compounds Targeting Small-Conductance Ca2+-Activated Potassium Channels, Miao Zhang, John M. Pascal, Marcel Schumann, Roger S. Armen, Ji-Fang Zhang

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Small- and intermediate-conductance Ca2+-activated potassium channels, activated by Ca2+-bound calmodulin, play an important role in regulating membrane excitability. These channels are also linked to clinical abnormalities. A tremendous amount of effort has been devoted to developing small molecule compounds targeting these channels. However, these compounds often suffer from low potency and lack of selectivity, hindering their potentials for clinical use. A key contributing factor is the lack of knowledge of the binding site(s) for these compounds. Here we demonstrate by X-ray crystallography that the binding pocket for the compounds of the 1-EBIO class is located at the calmodulin-channel interface. We …

Colloidal Filtration Of Alumina-Zirconia With Solid Oxide Additives / Hakimeh Wakily, Wakily Hakimeh Aug 2012

Colloidal Filtration Of Alumina-Zirconia With Solid Oxide Additives / Hakimeh Wakily, Wakily Hakimeh

Student Works (2010-2019)

Homogeneous ceramic composites of alumina and zirconia (3 mol % yttria stabilized zirconia) with small amount of solid oxides were prepared using colloidal filtration method. The purpose of using zirconia was to provide zirconia toughened alumina (ZTA) including 15wt% zirconia. And to improve the microstructure and density of ZTA, less than 0.5 wt% of magnesia was added. Solid oxide lubricant (CuO) was doped in small quantities (≤1 wt %) to provide a self-lubrication action and thereby to decrease the coefficient of dry friction. Suspension of alumina as well as the second phase materials was prepared with various solid loadings and …

How Common Citizens Transform Politics: The Cases Of Mexico And Bolivia, Rebeca Jasso-Aguilar Aug 2012

How Common Citizens Transform Politics: The Cases Of Mexico And Bolivia, Rebeca Jasso-Aguilar

Sociology ETDs

In this dissertation I compare the trajectories of two social movements against neoliberalism: the 2000 movement that successfully challenged the privatization of water in Cochabamba, Bolivia, and the movement that unsuccessfully challenged the results of the Mexican presidential election in 2006. I utilize Gramscis theory to examine neoliberalism as a passive revolution, and I apply concepts drawn from Buci-Glucksman's work on Gramsci's understanding of the State to examine these movements as 'anti-passive revolutions' and projects of radical democracy. My core argument holds that, despite emerging from quite divergent historical settings and socio-political contexts, these two movements against neoliberalism converged on …

Situational And Individual Predictors Of Violent Intentions: A Factorial Survey Approach, Dale Willits Aug 2012

Situational And Individual Predictors Of Violent Intentions: A Factorial Survey Approach, Dale Willits

Sociology ETDs

Though many criminological perspectives suggest that violence is the result of both individual and situational factors, the majority of criminological research focuses narrowly on individual-level factors. The current study contributes to the literature by utilizing a factorial survey design to examine both the independent and interactive effects of situational and individual predictors of violent behavioral intentions. This factorial survey presented college respondents with randomly generated versions of a hypothetical situation depicting interpersonal conflict and also gathered data about a variety of individual level factors known to predict violence. In order to improve the validity of the factorial survey method, the …

Portable Bacterial Identification System Based On Elastic Light Scatter Patterns, Euiwon Bae, Dawei Ying, Donald Kramer, Valery Patsekin, Bartek Rajwa, Cheryl Holdman, Jennifer Sturgis, Vincent J. Davisson, J Paul Robinson

Borch Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology Faculty Publications

Background

Conventional diagnosis and identification of bacteria requires shipment of samples to a laboratory for genetic and biochemical analysis. This process can take days and imposes significant delay to action in situations where timely intervention can save lives and reduce associated costs. To enable faster response to an outbreak, a low-cost, small-footprint, portable microbial-identification instrument using forward scatterometry has been developed.

Results

This device, weighing 9 lb and measuring 12 × 6 × 10.5 in., utilizes elastic light scatter (ELS) patterns to accurately capture bacterial colony characteristics and delivers the classification results via wireless access. The overall system consists of …

Across Lands: Double Consciousness And Negotiating Identities In Early Chinese American Literature, 1847-1910s, Ying Xu Aug 2012

Across Lands: Double Consciousness And Negotiating Identities In Early Chinese American Literature, 1847-1910s, Ying Xu

English Language and Literature ETDs

This dissertation analyzes the works of three early Chinese immigrant writers (Yung Wing, Yan Phou Lee, and Wong Chin Foo) and two mixed race writers (Edith Eaton and Winnifred Eaton) in late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century North America in order to critique the formation of early Chinese American literature. Borrowing W. E. B. Du Boiss construct of double consciousness and Amy Ling's theory of between worlds, I argue that the complicated double consciousness exhibited in the works of these early immigrant writers demonstrates their across lands strategies of negotiating identities prior to and during the Exclusion Era (1882-1943). My formulation …
