Herbivore Pressure Increases Toward The Equator, Robert Marquis, Diego Salazar Jul 2012

Herbivore Pressure Increases Toward The Equator, Robert Marquis, Diego Salazar

Biology Department Faculty Works

Increases in species diversity and density from higher to lower latitudes are well documented. Nevertheless, the consequences of these changes in diversity for structuring ecological communities and influencing biotic evolution are largely unknown. It is widely believed that this increase in species diversity is associated with increased intensity of ecological interactions closer to the equator. For plant–herbivore interactions in particular, the predictions are that, at lower latitudes, plants will be attacked by more individual herbivores, more herbivore species, and more specialized herbivores and, therefore, will suffer greater damage. We used a large-scale latitudinal transect from Mexico to Bolivia to quantify …

Low Levels Of Β-Lactam Antibiotics Induce Extracellular Dna Release And Biofilm Formation In Staphylococcus Aureus., Jeffrey B. Kaplan, Era A. Izano, Prerna Gopal, Michael T. Karwacki, Sangho Kim, Jeffrey L. Bose, Kenneth W. Bayles, Alexander R. Horswill

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology

UNLABELLED: Subminimal inhibitory concentrations of antibiotics have been shown to induce bacterial biofilm formation. Few studies have investigated antibiotic-induced biofilm formation in Staphylococcus aureus, an important human pathogen. Our goal was to measure S. aureus biofilm formation in the presence of low levels of β-lactam antibiotics. Fifteen phylogenetically diverse methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) strains were employed. Methicillin, ampicillin, amoxicillin, and cloxacillin were added to cultures at concentrations ranging from 0× to 1× MIC. Biofilm formation was measured in 96-well microtiter plates using a crystal violet binding assay. Autoaggregation was measured using a visual test tube …

Contribution Of The Staphylococcus Aureus Atl Am And Gl Murein Hydrolase Activities In Cell Division, Autolysis, And Biofilm Formation., Jeffrey L. Bose, Mckenzie K. Lehman, Paul D. Fey, Kenneth W. Bayles

Journal Articles: Pathology and Microbiology

The most prominent murein hydrolase of Staphylococcus aureus, AtlA, is a bifunctional enzyme that undergoes proteolytic cleavage to yield two catalytically active proteins, an amidase (AM) and a glucosaminidase (GL). Although the bifunctional nature of AtlA has long been recognized, most studies have focused on the combined functions of this protein in cell wall metabolism and biofilm development. In this study, we generated mutant derivatives of the clinical S. aureus isolate, UAMS-1, in which one or both of the AM and GL domains of AtlA have been deleted. Examination of these strains revealed that each mutant exhibited growth rates comparable …

Regulation Of Mirna Abundance By Rna Binding Protein Tough In Arabidopsis, Guodong Ren, Meng Xie, Yongchao Dou, Shuxin Zhang, Chi Zhang, Bin Yu

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are regulators of gene expression in plants and animals. The biogenesis of miRNAs is precisely controlled to secure normal development of organisms. Here we report that TOUGH (TGH) is a component of the DCL1–HYL1–SERRATE complex that processes primary transcripts of miRNAs [i.e., primary miRNAs (pri-miRNAs)] into miRNAs in Arabidopsis. Lack of TGH impairs multiple DCL activities in vitro and reduces the accumulation of miRNAs and siRNAs in vivo. TGH is an RNA-binding protein, binds pri-miRNAs and precursor miRNAs in vivo, and contributes to pri-miRNA–HYL1 interaction. These results indicate that TGH might regulate abundance of miRNAs through promoting DCL1 …

The Effects Of Endothelin-1 On Cell Migration Of Corneal Endothelial Cells, Leah B. Frazier Jul 2012

The Effects Of Endothelin-1 On Cell Migration Of Corneal Endothelial Cells, Leah B. Frazier

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Wound healing occurs through the processes of cell proliferation (mitosis) and/or cell migration. The corneal endothelium in humans is known to be mostly non-proliferative. As a result, wounds in the corneal endothelium heal by migration. A 21-amino acid peptide called Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is studied in the Crawford research lab and is a known mitogen, i.e. increases cell proliferation. Data suggests that Endothelin-1 can stimulate cell proliferation in the corneal endothelium. This fact led to the first hypothesis that ET-1 stimulated wound closure in this cell layer. I explored this hypothesis using a bovine model of corneal endothelial cells isolated and …

Multi-State Memory And Multi-Functional Devices Comprising Magnetoplastic Or Magnetoelastic Materials, Peter Müllner, William Knowlton

Boise State Patents

Apparatus and methods are disclosed that enable writing data on, and reading data of, multi-state elements having greater than two states. The elements may be made of magnetoplastic and/or magnetoelastic materials, including, for example, magnetic shape-memory alloy or other materials that couple magnetic and crystallographic states. The writing process is preferably conducted through the application of a magnetic field and/or a mechanical action. The reading process is preferably conducted through atomic-force microscopy, magnetic- force microscopy, spin-polarized electrons, magnetooptical Kerr effect, optical interferometry or other methods, or other methods/effects. The multi functionality (crystallographic, magnetic, and shape states each representing a functionality) …

Children, Youth, & Families

This report summarizes the quadrennial review of Maine's child support guidelines conducted by the USM Muskie School , which complies with federal law requiring each state's child support guidelines be reviewed at least once every four years. Principle findings of the extensive review by the Muskie School show that many aspects of Maine's child support system work well. Maine's low deviation rate reflects a reasonably high level of consistency in apply the guidelines, and in large part, protect the needs and interests of the children. The report provides background and overview of child support modes and the Maine guidelines, and …

The Identification Of Leadership Strategies Among Leaders Of Successful Mergers Or Acquisitions, Andrew F. Luce Jul 2012

The Identification Of Leadership Strategies Among Leaders Of Successful Mergers Or Acquisitions, Andrew F. Luce

Theses and Graduate Projects

This project investigates the leadership strategies used by leaders of successful mergers or acquisitions. Fifteen current or former Augsburg MAL students who have participated in a merger or acquisition were interviewed for this report. A significant cross section of Upper Midwest industries was represented as well as diverse segments of management among the interviewees.

Key techniques used by leaders include town-hall style meetings, integration or transition teams, employee panels and internal social media. Leader behaviors using these mediums govern the successful dissemination of vital information and the integration or creation of new corporate cultures. Effective leaders understand mergers or acquisitions …

The Effects Of Yoga Therapy On The Quality Of Life For A Paraplegic Individual, Allison Renee Purdy Jul 2012

The Effects Of Yoga Therapy On The Quality Of Life For A Paraplegic Individual, Allison Renee Purdy

Dissertations and Theses

The purpose of this study was to document the effects that a regular yoga therapy practice has on the quality of life for a paraplegic individual. Due to the unique nature of spinal cord injury (SCI), this was a case study with one participant. For 5 weeks the subject practiced a standardized yoga routine three times a week with a yoga teacher, receiving private instruction. Interview questions were asked before and after the intervention to document the participant's quality of life. Each week, the subject completed a modified SF-36 questionnaire as well as Cohen's Perceived Stress Survey. Perceived pain and …
