Analysis Of The Environmental Impact On Remanufacturing Wind Turbines, Manuel Sosa Skrainka Jul 2012

Analysis Of The Environmental Impact On Remanufacturing Wind Turbines, Manuel Sosa Skrainka

Theses

To deliver clean energy the use of wind turbines is essential. In June 2011 there was an installed wind capacity equivalent to 211,000MW world-wide (WWEA, 2011). By the end of the year 2009 the U.S. had 35,100MW of wind energy installed capacity to generate electricity (AWEA, 2010). This industry has grown in recent years and is expected to grow even more in the future. The environmental impacts that will arise from the increased number of wind turbines and their end-of-life should be addressed, as large amounts of resources will be required to satisfy the current and future market demands for …

Propagation And Scattering Of Optical Light Beams In Free Space, In Atmosphere, And In Biological Media, Serkan Sahin Jul 2012

Propagation And Scattering Of Optical Light Beams In Free Space, In Atmosphere, And In Biological Media, Serkan Sahin

Open Access Dissertations

With their first production implemented around 1960’s, lasers have afterwards proven to be excellent light sources in building the technology. Subsequently, it has been shown that the extraordinary properties of lasers are related to their coherence properties. Recent developments in optics make it possible to synthesize partially coherent light beams from fully coherent ones. In the last several decades it was seen that using partially coherent light sources may be advantageous, in the areas such as laser surface processing, fiber and free-space optical communications, and medical diagnostics. In this thesis, I study extensively the generation, the propagation in different media, …

Blogging the Library

I have some great news—as it turns out, I won’t have to say good-bye completely to my job at the library this fall! Meggan told me that they’d like to keep me on to work next year, if my schedule allows. I’ll get to work on my Political Cartoons exhibit after all! I might also get to help out with Jim Agard’s work that’s going on the second floor, and I’ll be here for all of the ALA exhibit preparations too. Meggan also said they were interested in having me do some Public Relations stuff—my official title will be along …

Numerical Analysis Of Phase Change Material For Energy Storage System / Wan Khairul Muzammil Abdul Rahim, Abdul Rahim Wan Khairul Muzammil

Student Works (2010-2019)

A numerical method based on the effective heat capacity method was studied to solve the phase change heat transfer problems of a phase change material in a cylindrical latent heat thermal energy storage device during the charging (melting) process of the material. The commercial software COMSOL Multiphysics was employed to run the numerical simulations. The effective heat capacity method was used to characterize the fusion heat of melting of the phase change material and the moving boundary of solid-liquid interface. An analytical tool was used to validate the phase change heat transfer process in which the results show a good …

The Design And Testing Of A Power Augmented Wind Turbine System For Urban High Rise Application / Pan Kok Chen, Kok Chen Pan Jul 2012

The Design And Testing Of A Power Augmented Wind Turbine System For Urban High Rise Application / Pan Kok Chen, Kok Chen Pan

Student Works (2010-2019)

The utilization of renewable energy such as wind energy and solar energy is receiving great attention due to the elevated price of fossil fuels in the international market as well as adverse environmental problems from the process of power generation. On-site generation is becoming more widespread for dwelling places, for example, photovoltaic panels, micro- CHP (Combined Heat and Power) and micro-wind. For on-site generation, building integrated wind turbines and solar energy systems serve as attractive opportunities. Retrofitting high-rise building would be a feasible choice for on-site wind turbine integration since no huge capital investment is involved. However, urban areas generally …

Hydrologic Evaluation Of Established Rain Gardens In Lincoln, Nebraska, Andrew R. Anderson, Thomas G. Franti, David P. Shelton Jul 2012

Hydrologic Evaluation Of Established Rain Gardens In Lincoln, Nebraska, Andrew R. Anderson, Thomas G. Franti, David P. Shelton

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

Increased urbanization has resulted in water quality and flooding problems for many receiving waters in the United States. Rain gardens are one type of best management practice commonly used in low impact development (LID). Many studies have evaluated large engineered bioretention cells in research settings. There is little information on the effectiveness of homeowner-maintained rain gardens that rely on deep percolation as the method for water exfiltration. Repeatable controlled experiments are very rare in hydrologic studies due to the inherent variability of weather data. The objective of this study was to evaluate the hydrologic properties of twelve established rain gardens …

A Molecular Rheostat Coupling Cell Size To Nutrient Availability In Bacteria, Anchun Chien Jul 2012

A Molecular Rheostat Coupling Cell Size To Nutrient Availability In Bacteria, Anchun Chien

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Cell size control is of universal importance to all organisms. Regulation of cell size ensures that cells are of the appropriate size for a given growth condition or developmental fate. Nutrient availability is a primary determinant of cell size in bacteria. Bacterial cells, including the Gram-positive Bacillus subtilis and the Gram-negative Escherichia coli increase size in a nutrient-dependent manner. Cells cultured in nutrient-rich medium can be up to twice the size of their counterparts cultured in nutrient-poor medium, suggesting that bacteria have ways of sensing nutrient availability and transmitting this information to the division machinery.

This dissertation first examines the …
