We present a general theory for regularization models of the Navier-Stokes equations based on the Leray deconvolution model with a general deconvolution operator designed to fit a few important key properties. We provide examples of this type of operator, such as the (modified) Tikhonov-Lavrentiev and (modified) Iterated Tikhonov-Lavrentiev operators, and study their mathematical properties. An existence theory is derived for the family of models and a rigorous convergence theory is derived for the resulting algorithms. Our theoretical results are supported by numerical testing with the Taylor-Green vortex problem, presented for the special operator cases mentioned above.

Three Arguments Relating The Study Of Ci-Poetry, Zhongyi Xia Jul 2012

Three Arguments Relating The Study Of Ci-Poetry, Zhongyi Xia

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Chinese ci-poetry as a different poetic form from shi-poetry has its distinctive aesthetic characteristics and a unique pattern of stylistic innovation. A full understanding of this claim is essential to a historical analysis and evaluation of the theorectical commentaries on ci-poetry from the ancient famous scholars. The famous claim that ci-poetry is but shi-poetry set to music can be investigated from the perspective of "verifying the music from the lyrics," and its legitimacy lies on the one hand in the aesthetic sentiments and the life-disposition complexity in lyrics-music complex and on the other hand in various anthologies, commentaries, reading notes …

"Poetry-Rituals-Happiness" In Chinese Thought And Aesthetics As A Discipline, Chengwan Lao, Meng Qi

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Aesthetics as a discipline was constructed under the system of Western philosophy, and then introduced into Chinese intellectual field. In terms of conceptualization of ideas, perhpas the concept of "happiness (le)" can be understood as equivalent to the Western concept of aesthetics. Aesthetics as a discinple in opposition to logic was established by Baumgarten, but its origin was rooted in Plato's concept of "beauty" and Aristotle's "form" in the four-cause elements. Western culture has a materialistic pursuit which emphasizes the essense of the objects as the expression of intuition of existence, and this pursuit in the form of rigorous examination of objects shows …

Encountering The World, Brown Marshall, Yin Bai Jul 2012

Encountering The World, Brown Marshall, Yin Bai

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

David Damrosch's writings on world literature envision readers "making themselves at home abroad." This essay argues against his Thoreauvian optimism, given a world that is too large to grasp or to become a home. World literature cannot be naturalized. Drawing on examples from Leibniz, Achebe, Walcott, and Petrarch, the essay proposes that world literature is best identified in terms not of the value of authors and works, nor of the situations portrayed through the characters and plots, but of the nature of the readerly experience. It examines the style of representation in world literature, which Brian Lennon's book In Babel's …

Raymond Williams And His Contrapuntal Reading Of Literary Representations, Weihua He

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

As two of the most fundamental spaces for inhabitation, "the country" and "the city", together with the life dramas with them as the background, are central themes of literary representation. Writers tend to celebrate the country because of its association with the peaceful pastoral life; on the other hand, the city, which stands for a secular and depraved way of life, becomes a sinister place in numerous literary works. People have taken these associations in literary representations for granted, forgetting that they are actually ideological constructions. In The Country and the City, Raymond Williams reads such spatial repre-sentations in literary …

Energy Efficiency Analysis And Optimization On Mobile Video Wireless Delivery, Jianxin Sun Jul 2012

Energy Efficiency Analysis And Optimization On Mobile Video Wireless Delivery, Jianxin Sun

Department of Computer Electronics and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Micro-electronic industry has been boosting the capability of wireless mobile devices on full-scale. However, battery, as the only power source of most mobile devices, is experiencing a relatively slow development. Therefore, how to optimally utilize the limited battery energy on mobile devices under a predefined performance requirement becomes a critical issue. On the other hand, it is still unclear that how the battery capacity consumption is allocated on different working pattern of a specific video codec under various tempo-spatial scales and parameters, which has posed a design challenge on power management on multimedia communication system. Furthermore, an optimization method is …

Design And Implementation Processes Of Low Impact Development In The Dallas - Fort Worth Area, Alice Cameron Holmes

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

In 1999, The EPA published The Stormwater Phase II rule, which instituted the implementation of "techniques, measures or structural control to manage and improve the quality of stormwater runoff" otherwise known as Best Management Practices (BMP). These strategies are designed to address one or more of three factors; flow control, pollutant removal, and pollutant source removal. As part of the list of techniques associated with BMP's, one in particular has become a more strategic approach that mimics predevelopment hydrology (EPA, 2012). This approach is known as Low Impact Development. Low Impact Development (LID) practices have emerged as the new alternative …

The "Pedestrian Realm" As A Genesis Of Commerce: Bazaars Of The East And Mixed-Use Centers Of The West, Zoha Niazi

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

Commerce is an ancient economical framework that enables establishment of social ties, improving cultural relationships, and trading values as well as commodities (Edgu et al., 2012). Different trends have taken place throughout history in this revenue based area, from the old Silk Road trading system to new department stores of this era. At the same time, exponential rise of the pressure of motorized traffic into the open public urban space has made non-motorized users such as pedestrians uncomfortable, but recently they started to be given more attention (Morgan, 1996), through mixed used environment especially in western cultures. The review of …

Modeling Chemistry In And Above Snow At Summit, Greenland – Part 2: Impact Of Snowpack Chemistry On The Oxidation Capacity Of The Boundary Layer, J L. Thomas, Jack E. Dibb, L Gregory Huey, J Liao, D Tanner, Barry Lefer, R Von Glasow, J Stutz

Earth Sciences

The chemical composition of the boundary layer in snow covered regions is impacted by chemistry in the snowpack via uptake, processing, and emission of atmospheric trace gases. We use the coupled one-dimensional (1-D) snow chemistry and atmospheric boundary layer model MISTRA-SNOW to study the impact of snowpack chemistry on the oxidation capacity of the boundary layer. The model includes gas phase photochemistry and chemical reactions both in the interstitial air and the atmosphere. While it is acknowledged that the chemistry occurring at ice surfaces may consist of a true quasi-liquid layer and/or a concentrated brine layer, lack of additional knowledge …

Neonatal Isoflurane Exposure On Apoptotic Neurodegeneration And Long-Term Behavioral Functions, Susan E. Maloney Jul 2012

Neonatal Isoflurane Exposure On Apoptotic Neurodegeneration And Long-Term Behavioral Functions, Susan E. Maloney

Dissertations

Clinical studies have reported multiple exposures to anesthesia are associated with an increased risk of later learning disabilities. The general anesthetic Isoflurane (ISO) is commonly used in pediatric anesthesia and decreases the activity of the central nervous system through activation of the GABAA receptor. Other drug classes, such as anxiolytics, anticonvulsants, and alcohol, that share this mechanism increase neuroapoptosis during the developmental brain growth spurt period. Exposure to these agents during this time also can have detrimental consequences on behavior. Two experiments were conducted to examine the acute neuroapoptotic response and long-term behavioral impact of postnatal ISO exposure using an …

The Effect Of Legal Financial Obligations On Reentry Experiences, Breanne Rae Pleggenkuhle Jul 2012

The Effect Of Legal Financial Obligations On Reentry Experiences, Breanne Rae Pleggenkuhle

Dissertations

In 2010, over 700,000 offenders were released from prison (Guerino, Harrison, and Sabol, 2012), and on any given day over seven million individual are under some form of correctional supervision (Glaze, 2011). Research has documented the collateral consequences of transition such as diminished employment prospects and limited housing availability. Fiscal concerns have shifted some of the costs of prosecution and correctional supervision to the offender, resulting in accumulation of legal financial obligations. However, little research has examined of the effect of legal financial obligations on reentry outcomes. This study has two broad goals. The first objective was to document the …

Relationship Between Exercise And The Expression Of Adhd Symptoms In College Students, Jessica Mcdaniel Jul 2012

Relationship Between Exercise And The Expression Of Adhd Symptoms In College Students, Jessica Mcdaniel

Theses and Dissertations

The goal of this study was to examine the relationship between cardio-respiratory exercise levels and the expression of symptoms commonly associated with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in a college population. Previous research suggests physical exercise may reduce common behavioral symptoms of ADHD. Symptoms commonly associated with ADHD include an inability to focus and feelings of restlessness, which may be harmful to a college student's academic success. The present study surveyed the exercise level, symptom expression, and diagnostic history of undergraduate students (N=315) at Rowan University. Exercise frequency and duration were calculated based on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services …
