Factors Of Hope: An Analysis Of Influencers Of Persistence For Hope Lottery Scholarship Recipients, Mario Brown Jul 2012

Factors Of Hope: An Analysis Of Influencers Of Persistence For Hope Lottery Scholarship Recipients, Mario Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The effects of persistence influencers in relation to the Tennessee Education Lottery Scholarship (HOPE), which began in 2004, on students at a private Tennessee university were examined. Post-facto data were extracted from the Tennessee Independent Colleges and Universities Association, National Center for Educational Statistics, and Tennessee Higher Education Commission lottery scholarship databases and reports. This study included data for entering freshmen from the 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 & 2008 academic years at a private liberal arts institution in the mid-south region of the United States. The main research question for this study is “What influencers are significant in determining persistence …

Exploring A Treatment For Problem Gambling By At-Risk Adolescents: A Randomized Trial Of A Brief Intervention, Andrea Nichole Watson Jul 2012

Exploring A Treatment For Problem Gambling By At-Risk Adolescents: A Randomized Trial Of A Brief Intervention, Andrea Nichole Watson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

High rates of at-risk adolescents have gambled, many in the past year. Many of these young people have also experienced a number of difficulties associated with their gambling including criminal acts. Problem gambling has been shown to co-occur with other risk-taking behaviors, such as substance use and delinquency. Males and ethnic minorities have a tendency to be at higher risk for developing gambling problems. Other factors that place adolescents at an increased risk for problem gambling include family history of gambling and peer involvement in gambling. When considering what motivates individuals to gamble, outcome expectancies have been identified as strong …

Influence Of Fluid-Structure Interaction On Wall Shear Stress In A Stented Coronary Artery Model, Sirisha Devi Govindaraju Jul 2012

Influence Of Fluid-Structure Interaction On Wall Shear Stress In A Stented Coronary Artery Model, Sirisha Devi Govindaraju

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Previous studies indicate that the likelihood of rate of restenosis following installation of a bare metal stent to treat coronary artery disease is related to the magnitude of the wall shear stress in the artery. The current study seeks to understand if including fluid-structure interaction (FSI) in a computational model of a stented coronary artery significantly influences the predicted wall shear stress on exposed patches of the artery. As a secondary result, it also determines influence of FSI on the magnitude of WSSon the surface of the stent. COMSOLMultiphysics was the computational tool selected for this study. It was carried …

Cellular Uptake Of Protein-Coated Graphene Oxide Nanosheets: Characterization, Mechanisms, Size-Dependence, And The Role Of Surface Charge, Ben Gilbertson Jul 2012

Cellular Uptake Of Protein-Coated Graphene Oxide Nanosheets: Characterization, Mechanisms, Size-Dependence, And The Role Of Surface Charge, Ben Gilbertson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Graphene and graphene oxide (GO) are two-dimensional nanomaterials with promising biomedical application potential, including drug and gene delivery, bio-imaging, and photothermal therapy. However, the nature of interactions between these materials and cells is poorly understood. Here, cell surface adhesion, subcellular localization, and size-dependent uptake are investigated in C2C12 cells using bovine serum albumin (BSA)-functionalized GO. Small BSA-GO nanosheets enter cells through clathrin-mediated endocytosis (CME), while large nanosheets enter cells through both CME and phagocytosis. Cytotoxicity is minimal. AFM-based size/thickness characterization of BSA-GO is performed in a systematic fashion, and a practical protocol for such analysis is presented. Size-dependent uptake results …

Improving The Way To The Land Of Opportunity: Internal Improvements In Antebellum Arkansas, Carl Edgar Brown Jul 2012

Improving The Way To The Land Of Opportunity: Internal Improvements In Antebellum Arkansas, Carl Edgar Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation investigates the importance of transportation in the development of Arkansas from its pre-colonial days to the Civil War. The study asks why Arkansas differed from other southern states in its position on internal improvements. Focused more on the old frontier east of the Mississippi River, studies of internal improvements have skimmed over developments west of the river until the railroad era of the 1850s and later. These studies highlighted the debate over the constitutionality of federally-funded internal improvements, indicating that most southerners were against federal involvement, while most northerners and westerners advocated federal aid. This study finds that …

Staff Training Programmes In Nigerian Public Libraries: The Case Of Enugu State Public Library, Jacintha U. Eze Jul 2012

Staff Training Programmes In Nigerian Public Libraries: The Case Of Enugu State Public Library, Jacintha U. Eze

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

This paper studied the staff training programmes in public libraries in Nigeria with particular reference to Enugu state library. The training needs of the staff of the library, the extent to which they are exposed to training programmes, how they benefit from training, the factors that hinder training and ways through which staff training could be improved were looked into. Structured questionnaire together with interview questions were used to gather data from the 82 workers of the library who formed the respondents. 80 copies of the questionnaire were returned and used for the analysis using frequencies and percentages. Findings showed …
