Quantity And Capacity Expansion Decisions For Ethanol In Nebraska And A Medium Sized Plant, Mahsa Khoshnoud Jul 2012

Quantity And Capacity Expansion Decisions For Ethanol In Nebraska And A Medium Sized Plant, Mahsa Khoshnoud

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Corn-based ethanol is the leader of sustainable sources of energy in the United States due to the abundance of corn and the popularity of ethanol-gasoline mixes. Over the past decade, ethanol production has risen from 1.5 million gallons in 1999 to 13 million gallons in 2011. This increase in production requires expansion of ethanol plants. Since Nebraska is the second highest producer of ethanol, we focus our research on the expansion of ethanol plants in Nebraska.

The aim of this study is to develop an optimization model for capital investments in ethanol in Nebraska and a medium sized ethanol plant …

Ideas of human interaction and levels of physical construction touched upon in geometry and physics have saturated my practice for many years. Having come from a small town in Virginia and moving to a big city like Chicago, I was confronted with massive amounts of people, ideas, cultures, and stimuli of which I had never before conceived. I realized that how we interact as people is a similar dynamic found in molecular interaction. This same interaction takes place in celestial formation, plant growth, decomposition, and even emotion. As I came to terms with my own presence in the world, my …

Early Human Vocalization Development: A Collection Of Studies Utilizing Automated Analysis Of Naturalistic Recordings And Neural Network Modeling, Anne Sanda Warlaumont Jul 2012

Early Human Vocalization Development: A Collection Of Studies Utilizing Automated Analysis Of Naturalistic Recordings And Neural Network Modeling, Anne Sanda Warlaumont

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Understanding early human vocalization development is a key part of understanding the origins of human communication. What are the characteristics of early human vocalizations and how do they change over time? What mechanisms underlie these changes? This dissertation is a collection of three papers that take a computational approach to addressing these questions, using neural network simulation and automated analysis of naturalistic data. The first paper uses a self-organizing neural network to automatically derive holistic acoustic features characteristic of prelinguistic vocalizations. A supervised neural network is used to classify vocalizations into human-judged categories and to predict the age of the child …

Optical Detection Of Surface Damage Of Rtv 655 Using A Laser Speckle Contrast Technique - A Feasibility Study, Charles Nathan Melton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Surface damage to critical instruments during space exploration is a factor that must be identified if it were to occur. A non-invasive remote sensing optical technique for detecting surface damage on RTV 655 was investigated under different environmental conditions. The adopted sesning mechanism utilizes speckle contrast fluctuations and inteference patterns created as a result of defect illumination with a 50 mW He-Ne laser. Defects expected to occur in orbit were simulated in a laboratory environment and the effect of defect geometry on the optical sensing technique was also explored. Compound samples containing both RTV 655 and polyurea crosslinked silica aerogel …

Social Influences And Intentions To Smoke In Adolescent Smokers: A Mediation Model, Ashley Jackson Jul 2012

Social Influences And Intentions To Smoke In Adolescent Smokers: A Mediation Model, Ashley Jackson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Research on the Theory of Planned Behavior has previously demonstrated that, as measures of subjective norms, descriptive norms and normative beliefs predict intentions to engage in behaviors such as smoking. Descriptive norms measuring the prevalence of parent and peer smoking have been investigated as predictors of intentions among adolescent smokers. Normative beliefs representing parent and peer attitudes toward smoking have also been shown to predict adolescents' plans to smoke. Within a sample of 356 adolescent smokers, the present study attempted to model the relationships between these measures of social influence and intentions using Structural Equation Modeling. Three emotional and cognitive …

Becoming Isis: Myth, Magic, Medicine, And Reproduction In Ancient Egypt, Chrystal Elaine Goudsouzian Jul 2012

Becoming Isis: Myth, Magic, Medicine, And Reproduction In Ancient Egypt, Chrystal Elaine Goudsouzian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

In ancient Egypt, sexuality, fertility, and the conception of children was of central importance not just to personal identity, but also to family and social structure. Because of the significance of birth in both the physical world and in the spiritual realm, references to reproduction, including fertility, conception, pregnancy, and childbirth, can be found in a wide variety of textual sources. Specifically, mythic events and scenarios, including those in magical spells, medico-magical spells, and funerary texts, reflected Egyptian reproductive conceptions and practices. Further, the Egyptians employed and called on these mythic episodes and archetypes to create divinely charged myth-mirroring space, …

Structural, Magnetic Properties And Mssbauer Analysis Of R2fe17-Xtmx (R: Dy, Er & Gd, Tm: Nb & Cr) Compounds., Binod Kumar Rai

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Binary rare-earth (R)-iron intermetallic compounds with Th2Ni17 and Th2Zn17 structure have been extensively studied for their potential application as permanent magnets. The main drawbacks of these materials are low Curie temperature (Tc) and magnetic anisotropies. In the present study, substitution of Fe atom by Nb or Cr atom shows enhancement in the magnetic properties of R2Fe17 compounds. On the first part of thesis, it presents effects of substituting iron atoms in R2Fe17 (R: Dy & Er) with bigger non-magnetic Nb atoms and smaller magnetic Cr atoms with changes in the structural and magnetic properties of the R2Fe17-xNb(orCr)x (0 ≤ x ≤ …

P-N Junction Oxide Nanoparticle As A Novel Photocatalyst For Solar Applications, Bedanga B T Sapkota

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Due to the spectral limitation of popular photocatalysts (PC) TiO2 and ZnO, there is quest for modification of the existing PC to enhance their photocatalytic performance. It has been demonstrated that the coupled nanostructured semiconductors in the form of nanocomposites (NC) enhance the performance by the mutual charge transfer of carriers between each semiconductor components with compatible chemical and electrical properties. ZnO (Bg: 3.37 eV) n-type semiconductor, is most important PC because of its high photosensitivity and stability. CuO (Bg: 1.85 eV), a p-type semiconductor, can be used in conjunction with ZnO to further improve its photocatalytic activity (PCA). Herein, …

The Rhetorical Situation Of Facebook, Justin L. Suiter Jul 2012

The Rhetorical Situation Of Facebook, Justin L. Suiter

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The online social network Facebook is a site of ocnsiderable rhetorical activity. Because it exists at the frontier of Web 2.0 or "new media" technology, this rhetorical activity has certain novel features that require an expansion of the concept of rhetorical situation. I apply Lloyd Bitzer's original theory of rhetorical situation to the context of Facebook in order to highlight the ways in which technological advances and shifts in theory necessitate a broader understanding of rhetorical situations. I argue that two of Bitzer's three essential elements, constraints and audience, are applicable to Facebook but must be adapted to suit its …

Deleuze's Critical Philosophy: The Differential Theory Of The Faculties, Cheri Lynne Carr Jul 2012

Deleuze's Critical Philosophy: The Differential Theory Of The Faculties, Cheri Lynne Carr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This dissertation argues that a sustained treatment of Gilles Deleuze's relationship to Immanuel Kant is eesential to a refined understanding of Deleuze's thought in his seminal work Difference and Repetition (1968). Five years before writing Difference and Repetition Deleuze published Kant's Critical Philosophy (1963), a short but comprehensive survey of Kant's work that introduced within the general traidic structure of Kant's critiques a more finely-grained structure oriented around the concept of faculties or capacities of thought. Kant's Critical Philosophy sees Deleuze using Kant's recurrent descriptions of the relationships between the faculties of thought as an organizing principle to reveal the …

The Freedom Faith Speeches Of Prathia L. Hall: Uncovering A Hybrid Rhetoric Of Protest, Mittie K. Carey Jul 2012

The Freedom Faith Speeches Of Prathia L. Hall: Uncovering A Hybrid Rhetoric Of Protest, Mittie K. Carey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Cultural hybridity is most prevalently revealed in cultures where racism starkly exists, according to Homi K. Bhabba. The Jim Crow culture if the South during the Civil Rights Movement was one such culture. To Bhabba, a hybridized racial identity emerges when two polarized cultures are thrown together. I alter his perspective by arguing that a hybridized rhetoric of protest emerged in the South before and during the Civil Rights Movement, as evinced by the freedom faith expressions of activist, womanist, professor, lecturer, and preacher Prathia L. Hall (1940-2002). Hall first coined the phrase, freedom faith, in 1997, but described it …

Conditioning Channel Catfish Fingerlings Ictalurus Punctatus To Acute Low-Water Stress And Comparison Of Metomidate And Ms-222 In Modulating The Short-Term Stress Response, Miriah Shiloh Mertell Jul 2012

Conditioning Channel Catfish Fingerlings Ictalurus Punctatus To Acute Low-Water Stress And Comparison Of Metomidate And Ms-222 In Modulating The Short-Term Stress Response, Miriah Shiloh Mertell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The efficacy of the anesthetics Metomidate and MS-222 to modulate the cortisol response of channel catfish during a 10 min confinement stress was compared, in preparation for evaluating whether or not previous conditioning increases resistance to Edwardsiella ictaluri. Fingerlings anesthetized in Metomidate maintained baseline levels of cortisol concentrations throughout the study (P< 0.05), whereas levels increased correspondingly in fish anesthetized in MS-222and controls. Metomidateis useful for long periods of anesthetization, but MS-222 suppressed cortisolsecretion for only the first 5 min of sedation. During the conditioning study, the cortisol response among disturbed fingerlings decreased over time, indicating conditioning occurred. However, cortisolconcentrations of conditioned fingerlings increasedwhen subjected to a disease challenge, although their responsewas significantly lower compared to unconditioned controls. This indicates a possibleadvantage in conditioningfish, although differential susceptibility to a disease challenge has not yetbeen demonstrated.

Out Of Joint: The Nexus Of Madness And Time-Consciousness, Heidi A. Samuelson Jul 2012

Out Of Joint: The Nexus Of Madness And Time-Consciousness, Heidi A. Samuelson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

According to Edmund Husserl, time is one of the most difficult phenomenological problems, and difficulties arise as soon as we attempt to reach an understanding of how temporal objectivity can become constituted in the subjective consciousness of time. I am focusing on one aspect of time-consciousness - the role it plays in studies of mental illness - in order to expose the difficulties, and ultimately the social problems, that arise when Husserlian structures of time-consciousness are taken as a medically normal foundation. In the first part of this project, I argue that Husserlian structures of time-consciousness are uncritically reliant upon …
