Aspects Of Compositional Process In Luciano Berio's Circles, Charles Hamilton Stratford Jul 2012

Aspects Of Compositional Process In Luciano Berio's Circles, Charles Hamilton Stratford

Theses and Dissertations

Luciano Berio (1925-2003) was one of the most innovative composers of vocal music in the European avant-garde. His composition for female voice, Circles (1960), marks an important stage in his collaboration with his wife, singer Cathy Berberian (1925-1983). Berio was attracted to Berberian's exceptional talents as a performer, and their work together created new avenues of expression for the solo voice, as Berio explored the relationship between music and language. Drawing upon archival documents, this thesis is a study of the materials and methods that make Circles one of Berio's pivotal works for voice. My interpretation of these sources engages …

A Longitudinal Study Of The Effect Of At Birth Adoptions On Anxiety, Stress Hormones And Adolescent Alcohol Intake: A Nonhuman Primate Model, Whitney Faith Maxwell Jul 2012

A Longitudinal Study Of The Effect Of At Birth Adoptions On Anxiety, Stress Hormones And Adolescent Alcohol Intake: A Nonhuman Primate Model, Whitney Faith Maxwell

Theses and Dissertations

Adopted individuals have an increased risk for a variety of psychopathological disorders. Studies of the effects adoption in humans are difficult to perform because of the difficulty separating genetic risk and treatment effects. This is a developmental study investigating the effects of at birth adoption using a nonhuman primate model. Three experimental paradigms were used to assess maternal treatment, stress-related behavior, and physiology late in infancy and again later in life. Rhesus monkeys were reared for their first six months of life by either their biological mother or an unrelated, lactating adult female. Adoptions occurred immediately following birth. At six …

Solid Oxide Fuel Cells With Both High Voltage And Power Output By Utilizing Beneficial Interfacial Reaction, Chao Su, Zongping Shao, Ye Lin, Yuzhou Wu, Huanting Wang Jul 2012

Solid Oxide Fuel Cells With Both High Voltage And Power Output By Utilizing Beneficial Interfacial Reaction, Chao Su, Zongping Shao, Ye Lin, Yuzhou Wu, Huanting Wang

Faculty Publications

An intriguing cell concept by applying proton-conducting oxide as the ionic conducting phase in the anode and taking advantage of beneficial interfacial reaction between anode and electrolyte is proposed to successfully achieve both high open circuit voltage (OCV) and power output for SOFCs with thin-film samarium doped ceria (SDC) electrolyte at temperatures higher than 600 °C. The fuel cells were fabricated by conventional route without introducing an additional processing step. A very thin and dense interfacial layer (2–3 μm) with compositional gradient was created by in situ reaction between anode and electrolyte although the anode substrate had high surface roughness …

Special Edition: National Clean Energy Summit, Nevada Institute For Renewable Energy Commercialization (Nirec)

Nevada Newsflash

Young Professionals in Energy–Nevada recently gathered for an up-to-the-day report on renewable energy at UNLV’s LEED-certified Science and Engineering Building given by Associate Vice President for Interdisciplinary Research Tom Piechota—just hours after President Obama appeared on campus in support of higher education.

Piechota, who also heads UNLV’s Urban Sustainability Initiative (and is this author’s boss in that capacity), covered all the overlapping curriculum and research going on. Of about 400 total research projects university-wide, 142 involve clean energy, water or environmental science – some at the nexus of all three. Department of Energy remains the biggest source of funding, along …

Evaluation Of A Novel Myoelectric Training Device, Ryan Clingman Jul 2012

Evaluation Of A Novel Myoelectric Training Device, Ryan Clingman

Theses and Dissertations

While research shows that a patient’s success in using a myoelectric prosthetic arm is dependent on receiving effective training, current methods of training are not designed to effectively hold attention long enough for optimal training. This study focused on evaluating a novel myoelectric training device, consisting of a toy car controlled by EMG signals from the arm. Subjects’ performance with the trainer was evaluated to determine its ability to provide experience with EMG controls. Eight healthy adult subjects were taken through typical initial stages of myoelectric training, then asked to drive the car through a slalom course while the time, …

Accurate Methodology For Monitoring Biomembrane Events, Christine A. Winschel Jul 2012

Accurate Methodology For Monitoring Biomembrane Events, Christine A. Winschel

Theses and Dissertations

Abstract ACCURATE METHODOLOGY FOR MONITORING BIOMEMBRANE EVENTS By Christine A. Winschel, Ph.D. A Dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctorate of Philosophy in Chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University. Virginia Commonwealth University, 2012 Major Director: Dr. Vladimir A. Sidorov ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR, DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY This study describes the synthesis and characterization of a new receptor (cyclen 1) capable of strong selective binding of pyrene-based anionic dyes under near-physiological conditions. This receptor comprises four naphthylthiourea groups tethered to a cyclen core via an ester linkage. The most important finding was the ability of cyclen 1 to …

Medication Monitoring In The Schools: An Investigation Of Current Practices Of Florida School Psychologists, Jason Hangauer Jul 2012

Medication Monitoring In The Schools: An Investigation Of Current Practices Of Florida School Psychologists, Jason Hangauer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Prevalence rates of youth prescribed psychotropic medications have risen dramatically over the past decade. Many of these medications are prescribed to treat symptoms of a disorder that occur in the school setting. Some medications have negative side effects that can inhibit academic and social performance. School psychologists have been identified as professionals who are equipped to assist in monitoring both the beneficial and negative effects of medications for youth attending school. This study investigated the practices, training, types of disorders for which medication monitoring occurs, facilitators, and barriers to school psychologists engaging in medication monitoring in the schools. Survey data …

Participation, Deliberation, And Decision Making: The Dynamics Of Inclusion And Exclusion In Mixed-Income Developments, Amy T. Khare, Mark L. Joseph Jul 2012

Participation, Deliberation, And Decision Making: The Dynamics Of Inclusion And Exclusion In Mixed-Income Developments, Amy T. Khare, Mark L. Joseph

Faculty Scholarship

This paper explores the mechanisms, processes, and dynamics of participation and deliberation in three newly created, mixed-income communities being built on the footprint of former public housing developments in Chicago. Our findings reflect enduring dilemmas about the challenge of democratic participation and representation for low-income citizens in the context of urban revitalization efforts. In the current case, a fundamental tension exists between two orientations to organizing participation, one (dominant) orientation that privileges “mainstreaming” public housing resident participation into collaborative governance structures and existing market and civil society mechanisms, and another that suggests the continuing need for dedicated mechanisms that maximize …
