Information Services In Science And Technology - The Swedish Consortium Model For Resource Sharing, Nancy Fjallbrant, Stephan Schwarz Jul 2012

Information Services In Science And Technology - The Swedish Consortium Model For Resource Sharing, Nancy Fjallbrant, Stephan Schwarz

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

This paper describes a 'new' idea for national resource sharing - called the Consortium Model - which has grown out of current discussions on sectororiented library and information services of the Fachinformationszentrum type. The Consortium is a 'network' consisting of the six major resource libraries in Science and Technology in Sweden, which jointly aim to provide a national information service with regard to literature holdings, reference services, database promotion and use, document supply, and education and training. Services are available to both the academic community, and to industrial and other 'external' users such as governmental and parastatal organizations and research …

The Technological University Library And Industry, Jay K. Lucker Jul 2012

The Technological University Library And Industry, Jay K. Lucker

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The relationship between research universities and industry has been characterized in many ways. Some have called it a mutually beneficial arrangement of what we might call symbiosis. At the other end of the spectrum are observers who view the situation in a much more negative manner, using terms like parasitic, exploitative, and non-productive. One must hasten to add that not all of the detractors are to be found on university campuses any more than are all of the supporters in industrial research laboratories. There are many varieties of university-industry co-operation and most of them are of the successful variety, at …

Some Problems Of Collecting And Utilizing Foreign Journals In Polish Libraries, Henryk Szarski

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Polish academic libraries suffer from a significant lack of foreign scientific journals. Funds assigned by the Ministry are insufficient. The central system of periodicals subscription also reveals many shortcomings. These problems should be solved through co-operation with the Central Academic Libraries. The Library of the Technical University of Wroclaw is one of the three Central Technical Libraries which undertake various actions in order to increase the level of serviees in the area of foreign scientific journais. Among others, a computer system, SPEC, has been elaborated to assist the subscription of foreign journals for the libraries of Poland.

The Computerized Network Of Israeli University Libraries, Nurit Roitberg Jul 2012

The Computerized Network Of Israeli University Libraries, Nurit Roitberg

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The last five years have been a period of electronic revolution in Israeli university libraries. During these years, large scale computerization has been carried out. Introduction of the automated systems to the libraries has improved both local library services and the level of resource sharing among the libraries.

A national network has been created under the auspices of the governmental office which finances the universities. The aim of this network is to improve co-operation among the libraries. The network is governed by a committee in which library directors are members. This committee is responsible for preparation and supervision of software …

The Basic Principles For The Development Of A Computerized Information System In The Central Technical Library (Strategic Appraisal), Nada Cucnik-Majcen

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Today, when we talk about information technology issues in library and information services, it is difficult to outline with great precision optimal developmental objectives for these services. The problem with which information providers using sophisticated information technology are confronted is how to plan for the efficient management of information and library services in the fast-growing and constantly changing field of electronic information, in order to meet the increasing demand from the present business and industrial sector for library services.

Document Delivery - The Dawn Of A New Era, Andrew Braid Jul 2012

Document Delivery - The Dawn Of A New Era, Andrew Braid

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

Only a few years ago the phrase 'document delivery' was never used in connection with libraries. Instead the term 'inter-library loan' (ILL) was used. The reason for the change is very simple and is due entirely to photocopying machines. Before these existed it was a very cumbersome, slow and expensive operation to màke copies of individual documents from bound books and journals. Photocopying machines allowed the quick and cheap duplication of documents: these copies could be supplied far more cheaply and efficiently than the loan of an item. A second cause was the development of online bibliographic databases which give …
