How Dtra/Scc-Wmd Is Minimizing The Risk Of Catastrophic Accidents, Anne Marek Jul 2012

How Dtra/Scc-Wmd Is Minimizing The Risk Of Catastrophic Accidents, Anne Marek

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

The U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency and the U.S. Strategic Command Center for Combating Weapons of Mass Destruction are taking measures to reduce the number of accidents caused by conventional weapons. More accidents are occurring with the proliferation of small arms and light weapons; DTRA wants to significantly reduce those accidents and the risks of their occurrence. In doing so, DTRA's SA/LW Program organizes and conducts seminars on the practices for physical security and stockpile management throughout the world. Its goal is to educate countries through seminars on proper management of stockpiles and to ultimately assuage the risk of those …

Unplanned Explosions At Munitions Sites: Concerns And Consequences, Eric Berman, Pilar Reina Jul 2012

Unplanned Explosions At Munitions Sites: Concerns And Consequences, Eric Berman, Pilar Reina

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Over the past 25 years there have been reports of more than 400 unplanned explosions at munitions sites in almost half the world's countries. The UEMS rate is quickly increasing. Whereas the Small Arms Survey's UEMS Database shows 70 such incidents for the 10-year period between 1987 and 1996, more than this number was registered in the past two years alone. These events occur in large part because states store their munitions improperly. This article reviews the direct and indirect consequences of these explosions on peace and security. It also notes steps states are taking—or should take—to improve practice in …

Urban Land Release In Libya: Bac And Land Release In Built-Up Areas, Robert Keeley Jul 2012

Urban Land Release In Libya: Bac And Land Release In Built-Up Areas, Robert Keeley

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

This article's aim is to present several land-release principles for use in the battle-area clearance of Libya's built-up areas, also called Urban Land Release. Based on the practical, empirical experience of DanChurchAid, it is not intended as a one-size-fits-all solution to BAC task planning, but it may be helpful in other locations when compared with local knowledge of the situation on the ground. It does not apply to landmine clearance. BAC is the traditional means of clearing unexploded ordnance in open areas. Libya is now contaminated with UXO and explosive remnants of war as a result of the uprising that …

Myxobacteria Versus Sponge-Derived Alkaloids: The Bengamide Family Identified As Potent Immune Modulating Agents By Scrutiny Of Lc-Ms/Elsd Libraries., Tyler A. Johnson, Johann Sohn, Yvette M. Vaske, Kimberly N. White, Tanya L. Cohen, Helene C. Vervoort, Karen Tenney, Frederick A. Valeriote, Leonard F. Bjeldanes, Phillip Crews

Natural Sciences and Mathematics | Faculty Scholarship

A nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) luciferase assay has been employed to identify the bengamides, previously known for their anti-tumor activity, as a new class of immune modulators. A unique element of this study was that the bengamide analogs were isolated from two disparate sources, Myxococcus virescens (bacterium) and Jaspis coriacea (sponge). Comparative LC-MS/ELSD and NMR analysis facilitated the isolation of M. viriscens derived samples of bengamide E (8) and two congeners, bengamide E' (13) and F' (14) each isolated as an insperable mixture of diastereomers. Additional compounds drawn from the UC, Santa Cruz repository allowed expansion of the structure activity relationship …

Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

A Case Study Examining Gender And Self-Efficacy In A Newsroom, Kathryn Eileen Parry Jul 2012

A Case Study Examining Gender And Self-Efficacy In A Newsroom, Kathryn Eileen Parry

Theses and Graduate Projects

The challenging work atmosphere that is the newspaper industry in the early part of this century requires employees, and in particular those who serve in leadership roles, to exhibit a high sense of perceived self-efficacy if they are to survive and thrive. By analyzing in depth the groundbreaking research in self-efficacy by Albert Bandura, this paper seeks to apply Bandura's research and survey tools to examine self-efficacy in a large newsroom and whether there is a difference in the perceived level of self-efficacy depending on gender. In a case study of middle managers in the newsroom, a survey was developed, …

Monitoring Of The Aircraft Cabin Environment Via A Wireless Sensor Network, Michael Pook, Sin Ming Loo, Joshua Kiepert Jul 2012

Monitoring Of The Aircraft Cabin Environment Via A Wireless Sensor Network, Michael Pook, Sin Ming Loo, Joshua Kiepert

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Wireless sensor networks consist of physically distributed autonomous sensor nodes that cooperatively monitor physical or environmental conditions. The key benefit of wireless sensor networks is that they are capable of generating a more complete view of the sensed environment by acquiring larger quantities of correlated data than independent sensor monitors. This makes them ideally suited for applications where a complex environment with many interdependent factors must be monitored. The aircraft cabin is one such example of a highly dynamic environment which necessitates the use of an advanced sensing system. Thus, in order to gain a better understanding of the aircraft …

A Portable Wireless Particulate Sensor System For Continuous Real-Time Environmental Monitoring, James A. Hall Jr., Sin Ming Loo, Dale Stephenson, Ross Butler, Michael Pook, Joshua Kiepert, Jordan Anderson, Nicholas Terrell

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Airborne particulate matter has been shown to be associated with morbidity and mortality, and may interfere with certain sensitive experiment. Understanding the levels and movements of particulate matter in an enclosed space can lead to a reduction in the impact of this material on health and experimental results. A system of environmental sensors including particulate matter, selected gasses, humidity, temperature, and pressure can be used to assist in tracking air movement, providing real-time mapping of potential contaminants as they move through a space. In this paper we present a system that is capable of sensing these environmental factors, collecting data …

Teachers' Perceptions Of Rural Stem Teaching: Implications For Rural Teacher Retention, Kasey P. S. Goodpaster, Omolola A. Adedokun, Gabriela C. Weaver Jul 2012

Teachers' Perceptions Of Rural Stem Teaching: Implications For Rural Teacher Retention, Kasey P. S. Goodpaster, Omolola A. Adedokun, Gabriela C. Weaver

The Rural Educator

Rural school districts often struggle with attracting and retaining high-quality teachers, especially in science subject areas. However, little is known about STEM in-service teachers’ lived experiences of rural teaching as they relate to retention. In this phenomenographical study, six rural in-service science teachers were interviewed regarding their perceptions of the benefits and challenges of teaching in rural schools in general, and teaching science subjects in particular. Community interactions, professional development, and rural school structures emerged as three key factors related to rural teacher retention. Participants viewed each of these factors as having both positive and negative aspects. Findings from this …

Exploring Rural Contexts With Digital Storytelling, Donna G. Wake

The Rural Educator

This article describes rural middle school students’ exploration of their identity and their rural contexts through the vehicle of digital storytelling. Participants included 40 7th and 40 9th grade students at two rural schools in the Southeast United States. Students worked in shared writing groups to create digital stories expressing their views on teen life in a small, rural town. The resultant stories were analyzed using comparative grounded theory yielding some themes which may be posited as unique to a rural population while other themes were typical of the developmental age regardless of geographical context. Study findings indicate that the …

The Effect Of Constructivist Mathematics On Achievement In Rural Schools, Michael Grady, Sandra Watkins, Greg Montalvo

The Rural Educator

International assessment data indicate American students are not competing with their counterparts in other countries. The mathematics curriculum and pedagogy are not preparing students to compete in a global economy. This study compared student achievement using sixth grade mathematics results from the Illinois Standards Achievement Test. Specifically, the study compared the results of students in three different rural school districts, all of whom were receiving instruction in three different mathematics curricula. In one district, students received seven years of the K-6 Everyday Mathematics curriculum which was compared with students who received seven years of instruction using a traditional mathematics curriculum …

High-Throughput Rear-Surface Drilling Of Microchannels In Glass Based On Electron Dynamics Control Using Femtosecond Pulse Trains, Lan Jiang, Pengjun Liu, Xueliang Yan, Ni Leng, Chuancai Xu, Hai Xiao, Yongfeng Lu

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This study proposes a rear-surface ablation enhancement approach to fabricate high-aspect-ratio microchannels by temporally shaping femtosecond laser pulse trains. in the case study of K9 glass, enhancements of up to a 56 times higher material removal rate and a three times greater maximum drilling depth are obtained by the proposed method, as compared with conventional femtosecond laser drilling at the same processing parameters. the improvements are due to the changes of photon-electron interactions by shaping femtosecond pulse train, which can effectively adjust the photon absorption and localized transient material properties by changing electron dynamics such as free electron densities. © …

Chromatin function requires specific three-dimensional architectures of chromosomes. We investigated whether Saccharomyces cerevisiae extra TFIIIC (ETC) sites, which bind the TFIIIC transcription factor but do not recruit RNA polymerase III, show specific intranuclear positioning. We show that six of the eight known S. cerevisiae ETC sites localize predominantly at the nuclear periphery, and that ETC sites retain their tethering function when moved to a new chromosomal location. Several lines of evidence indicate that TFIIIC is central to the ETC peripheral localization mechanism. Mutating or deleting the TFIIIC-binding consensus ablated ETC -site peripheral positioning, and inducing degradation of the TFIIIC subunit …

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Methoxyamine (MX) is the first DNA base-excision-repair (BER) inhibitor evaluated in humans. This work described the development and validation of an LC–MS/MS method for quantitative determination of MX in human plasma. In this method, MX and its stable isotope methoxyl-d3-amine (MX-d3 as internal standard) were directly derivatized in human plasma with 4-(N,N-diethylamino)benzaldehyde. The derivatized MX and IS were extracted by methyl-tert-butyl ether, and separated isocratically on a Xterra C18 column (2.1 mm × 100 mm) using an aqueous mobile phase containing 45% acetonitrile and 0.4% formic acid at a flow rate of 0.200 ml/min. Quantitation of MX was carried out …
