Nitrated Fibrinogen Is A Biomarker Of Oxidative Stress In Venous Thromboembolism, Marissa Martinez, Adam Cuker, Angela Mills, Richard Lightfoot, Yiying Fan, W.H. Wilson Tang, Stanley L. Hazen, Harry Ischiropoulos Jul 2012

Nitrated Fibrinogen Is A Biomarker Of Oxidative Stress In Venous Thromboembolism, Marissa Martinez, Adam Cuker, Angela Mills, Richard Lightfoot, Yiying Fan, W.H. Wilson Tang, Stanley L. Hazen, Harry Ischiropoulos

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

The pathogenesis of venous thromboembolism (VTE) is linked to inflammation and oxidant production, although specific markers for these pathways with pathological relevance to VTE have not been explored. The coagulant protein fibrinogen is posttranslationally modified by nitric oxide-derived oxidants to nitrated fibrinogen in both acute and chronic inflammatory states. Therefore, nitrated fibrinogen may serve as a marker of inflammation and oxidative stress in VTE. To test this hypothesis we enrolled subjects (n=251) presenting with suspected VTE at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital emergency department, 50 (19.9%) of whom were positive by imaging or 90-day follow-up. Mean nitrated fibrinogen was elevated …

Principals As Assessment Leaders In Rural Schools, Patrick Renihan, Brian Noonan Jul 2012

Principals As Assessment Leaders In Rural Schools, Patrick Renihan, Brian Noonan

The Rural Educator

This article reports a study of rural school principals’ assessment leadership roles and the impact of rural context on their work. The study involved three focus groups of principals serving small rural schools of varied size and grade configuration in three systems. Principals viewed assessment as a matter of teacher accountability and as a focus for the school professional team. They saw themselves as teachers first, stressing their importance as sources of teacher support, serving a ‘buffer role,’ ameliorating external constraints to effective assessment and learning. Bureaucratic environments and trappings of large-scale assessment were seen to be incompatible with the …

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objectives: The success of endodontic surgery has been shown to depend partly on the apical seal. Grey mineral trioxide aggregate (GMTA) produces hydroxyapatite twice as often as white mineral trioxide aggregate (WMTA) when suspended in a phosphate buffered saline (PBS) solution. The aim of this in vitro study was to compare the microleakage phenomenon of gray and white mineral trioxide aggregates as root-end filling materials after immersion in synthetic tissue fluid (STF). Methods: 55 single-rooted extracted maxillary anterior human teeth were divided into two experimental groups of 20 teeth each, plus 3 groups of 5 teeth each as two negative …

Immunotherapy For B-Cell Neoplasms Using T Cells Expressing Chimeric Antigen Receptors : From Antigen Choice To Clinical Implementation, Mohamed-Rachid Boulassel, Ahmed Galal Jul 2012

Immunotherapy For B-Cell Neoplasms Using T Cells Expressing Chimeric Antigen Receptors : From Antigen Choice To Clinical Implementation, Mohamed-Rachid Boulassel, Ahmed Galal

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Immunotherapy with T cells expressing chimeric antigen receptors (CAR) is being evaluated as a potential treatment for B-cell neoplasms. In recent clinical trials it has shown promising results. As the number of potential candidate antigens expands, the choice of suitable target antigens becomes more challenging to design studies and to assess optimal efficacy of CAR. Careful evaluation of candidate target antigens is required to ensure that T cells expressing CAR will preferentially kill malignant cells with a minimal toxicity against normal tissues. B cells express specific surface antigens that can theoretically act as targets for CAR design. Although many of …

Traumatic Acute Brain Herniation Through The Ear In A Child : Concealed Compound Fracture, Rajeev Kariyattil, Unnikrishnan Muthukuttiparambil

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

A seven-year-old girl presented to Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Oman, with a history of having been hit by a motor vehicle. After this, she had right-sided cerebrospinal fluid otorrhoea, and a week later, brain matter extruded through the right ear. A computed tomography scan of the brain demonstrated a tegmen fracture communicating with the external auditory canal. There was no hearing or facial nerve impairment and an otoscopic examination showed an intact tympanic membrane. She underwent a transcranial repair of the middle cranial fossa base, which revealed a wide dural and bony defect of the tegmen with herniation of the …

Successful Resuscitation Of An Extremely Low Birth Weight Premature Infant In Delma Island Community Hospital, United Arab Emirates, Zahra’A M. Saeed, Imad I. Shubbar

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Because of their physical size and physiological immaturity, resuscitation of extremely very low birth weight premature infants is a big dilemma for neonatologists in any hospital. The resuscitation may present an additional challenge to the caregiver if it is undertaken in a remote community hospital with limited technical facilities and health personnel. We present the case of successful resuscitation of a 23-week- old premature infant, with a birth weight of 650 g, at Delma Island Community Hospital, United Arab Emirates. Despite the comparatively limited facilities for such a resuscitation, the rapid ethical decisions made when considering the resuscitation of such …

Understanding Dyslexia In Children Through Human Development Theories, Thuraya A. Al-Shidhani, Vinita Arora Jul 2012

Understanding Dyslexia In Children Through Human Development Theories, Thuraya A. Al-Shidhani, Vinita Arora

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Dyslexia is a specific learning disability that is neurological in origin, with an estimated overall worldwide prevalence of 5–10% of the population. It is characterised by difficulties in reading, accuracy, fluency, spelling and decoding abilities. The majority of publications reviewed indicated that screening is performed at the preschool level. Screening can also be conducted at birth or the first year of life. Understanding human development theory, for example, Piaget’s human development theory, may help determine at which stage of childhood development dyslexia is more detectable, and therefore guide the management of this disability. The objective of this review is to …
