A Taxonomy Of Regulations: The Effect Of Regulation On Selling Activities, John F. Riggs
A Taxonomy Of Regulations: The Effect Of Regulation On Selling Activities, John F. Riggs
Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects
Many companies are faced with rising numbers of regulations with which they must comply. Regulations are particularly common in the areas of employment, environmental protection, and licensing of businesses. In recent years, a growing trend of new regulations has emerged in the selling and sales management business environment, changing the nature and scope of salespeople’s jobs. How do regulations affect the way salespeople do their jobs? This is an important and largely unexplored question. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to empirically construct a taxonomy of regulations that reveals their effect on current selling activities. A total of 7,493 …

Predictive Policing: A Review Of The Literature, Portland State University. Criminology And Criminal Justice Senior Capstone
Criminology and Criminal Justice Senior Capstone Project
Improving knowledge of crime and crime causation is an important focus for many law enforcement agencies. Many believe such knowledge can be used to predict crime and criminal behavior. Predictive policing is one of a variety of strategies developed by law enforcement personnel and researchers. The practice of law enforcement is frequently reactive, in nature, where police officers respond to crimes after they have been committed. In an effort to prevent future crimes, however, those with an interest in prevention have also added the strategy of proactive policing, where information and advanced analyses are added to their repertoire of approaches. …

Inquiry- Without Posing Questions?, Helle Alrø, Marit Johnsen-Høines
The Mathematics Enthusiast
This article discusses what inquiry conversations could mean when learning mathematics.3 Referring to Gadamar’s distinction of true and apparent questions it is discussed what it takes to be inquiring and if this attitude necessarily includes posing questions. Which qualities are expressed in inquiring questions, and what other ways of communicating may have an inquiring function in learning conversations? The intention is to develop and frame the concept of ’inquiry’ in learning conversations, and this is the focus of analysis of an authentic classroom situation, where teacher and pupils are exploring the concept of ’volume’. Further, this analysis informs a …
Investigating Engineers’ Needs As A Part Of Designing A Professional Development Program For Engineers Who Are To Become Mathematics Teachers, Ragnhild Johanne Rensaa
Investigating Engineers’ Needs As A Part Of Designing A Professional Development Program For Engineers Who Are To Become Mathematics Teachers, Ragnhild Johanne Rensaa
The Mathematics Enthusiast
The average age for teachers in mathematics and physics in Norway is about 60 (Sørensen, 2003) and few students taking a masters degree in a science subject choose a career as a teacher (KD, 2006). This implies that there may be a critical lack of science teachers in schools in the near future (Næss, 2002). At the same time, rather many graduated engineers – who have worked as engineers sometimes several years – want to contribute to the educational setting by taking part time jobs as teachers; lector-II (Vassnes, 2008). To combine this supply and demand for qualified teachers in …
The Role Of Theory When Studying Epistemological Characterizations Of Mathematics Lecture(R)S, Magnus Österholm
The Role Of Theory When Studying Epistemological Characterizations Of Mathematics Lecture(R)S, Magnus Österholm
The Mathematics Enthusiast
The study presented in this paper is a contribution to the scientific discussion about the role and use of theory in mathematics education research. In particular, focus is here on the use of and comparison between different types of theories and frameworks, which is discussed primarily through the example of an empirical study examining what types of messages about mathematics are conveyed in lectures. The main purpose of this paper is to examine how different types of theories and frameworks can affect different parts of the research process.

Diversification In Andean Tit-Tyrants (Aves, Tyrannidae), Shane G. Dubay
Diversification In Andean Tit-Tyrants (Aves, Tyrannidae), Shane G. Dubay
Biology ETDs
In my thesis I investigate evolution and diversification of montane birds that inhabit dramatic environmental and latitudinal gradients, specifically within the genus Anairetes (Aves, Tyrannidae). I use phylogenetic, population genetic, and physiological methods to examine patterns of diversification across environmental gradients. In the first chapter, I infer the phylogeny of Anairetes tit-tyrants to provide an essential phylogenetic framework to ask subsequent questions of biogeography and diversification within the group. In the second chapter, I investigated the role of differential adaptation to altitude in promoting diversification and maintaining species limits between A. reguloides and A. nigrocristatus. The phylogeny of the flycatcher …
Effects Of Global Change On Savanna Grassland Ecosystems, Sally Elizabeth Koerner
Effects Of Global Change On Savanna Grassland Ecosystems, Sally Elizabeth Koerner
Biology ETDs
Humans are altering the environment locally and globally through climate and land use change. Global temperature is increasing, precipitation patterns are becoming more variable, disturbance regimes are being altered, and ecosystems are being simplified as multi-species communities are replaced by monocultures of crops or livestock. Grasslands, which cover approximately a third of the terrestrial lands, are ecologically and economically significant, thus their responses to environmental change will have dramatic consequences for global patterns of productivity, biodiversity, and food production. This dissertation research investigates how the three main drivers of mesic grassland ecosystems — precipitation, grazing, and fire - interact to …
Identification Of The Wings Apart Transcriptional Unit In Drosophila Melanogaster, Ginny R. Morriss
Identification Of The Wings Apart Transcriptional Unit In Drosophila Melanogaster, Ginny R. Morriss
Biology ETDs
Muscle development is an evolutionarily conserved process. Mechanisms that govern the development of specific muscles in invertebrates can inform our understanding of how vertebrate muscles form. Understanding these processes allows us to translate developmental mechanisms to disease pathogenesis, as similar genes and developmental processes are affected by these diseases. In this dissertation, CG14614 is identified as the gene responsible for the wings apart phenotype in Drosophila melanogaster. This mutation leads to a loss of the adult jump muscle (TDT) in most cases and a greater than 60% reduction in muscle fibers in its least severe form. wap mutants fail to …

Not Congruent But Quite Complementary: U.S. And Chinese Approaches To Nontraditional Security, Lyle J. Goldstein
CMSI Red Books
U.S.-China relations, difficult in the best of times, have lurched in a dangerous direction since 2009. Against the backdrop of a weakened global economy and sharpened ideological tensions, there has been a disturbing new atmosphere of crisis in East Asia over the last two years, with incidents occurring in greater frequency and sowing serious doubts about the sustainability of the "long peace" that this region has enjoyed for decades. Indeed, any one of the following incidents could have escalated into a serious regional crisis: the sinking of the South Korean frigate Cheonan; the collision between a Japanese coast guard …

Low-Cycle Fatigue Of Thermally-Cycled Carbon-Epoxy Composite, Ya. B. Unigovski, A. Grinberg, E. M. Gutman, R. Shneck
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
Investigation of low-cycle fatigue of composites is of vital importance for the design of structural components. In this study, the effects of thermal cycling on low-cycle fatigue behavior of carbon-epoxy laminate are investigated in a purely bending mode at strain ratios of -1 and 0.1. It is found that a very small increase in the plastic strain amplitude catastrophically shortens the fatigue life N of the composite determined as a number of cycles corresponding to 0.9 of the initial force. The preliminary thermal cycling of the composite at the temperature varied from 180°C to −195.8°C shortens N values in comparison …

Failure Analysis Of Bearings In Air Conditioning Compressor, P. Promdirek, A. Leidig, T. Keawjarus, P. Tong-In
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
Two journal bearings of a compressor were failed in service. The wear which led to crack was observed at the internal surface of both bearings. The objective of this analysis is to evaluate the reason for the wear found on the internal bearings surface. Two bearings were returned from field and others in several conditions were examined. Electron probe micro analyzer and microhardness was used for metallurgical analysis. It revealed that bearing consisted of two different layers: 1) Fe-base and 2) Al-Sn alloy. Surface worn at the internal surface which composed of Al-Sn alloy was found. The results also showed …

This paper discusses the first year of the SunBay Digital Mathematics Project (SunBay Math) and the project‘s implications for educational reform. It reviews the research literature on the SimCalc replacement unit Managing the Soccer Team and describes the unit‘s implementation in a large, urban district. Findings from professional development experiences, teacher observations, and student gain scores are shared. Similar to the results published in Roschelle, Schectman, et al. (2010), there was a large and significant increase in mathematics understanding for SunBay Math students who learned in classrooms implementing Managing the Soccer Team in contrast to students in Texas control classrooms.

Behavior Of Full-Scale Rc T-Beams Strengthened In Shear With Externally Bonded Frp Sheets, Abdeldjelil Belarbi, Sang Wook Bae, Antonio Brancaccio
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Recently many research studies have investigated the shear behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. However, most were conducted on small-scale specimens. Thus, analytical models and design equations developed from those studies may not predict the actual behavior of large-scale RC beams strengthened with FRPs. in this study, an experimental study was performed on this topic using full-scale RC T-beams in order to understand the behavior of full-scale bridge beams strengthened in shear with FRP. the main parameters investigated in this study were the transverse steel reinforcement ratio and the effect of mechanical anchorage systems. …

A Comparative Analysis Of California And German Renewable Energy Policy: Actors And Outcomes, Jesse M. Keppley
A Comparative Analysis Of California And German Renewable Energy Policy: Actors And Outcomes, Jesse M. Keppley
Josef Korbel Journal of Advanced International Studies
Policymakers have long been interested in promoting renewable energy development. Yet it is only over the last two decades that interest has fully bloomed, leading to new policy instruments designed to promote increased generation in an economically efficient manner. Two environmental leaders, California and Germany, are identified as models in this field. Both have shown remarkable growth in generating capacity. Yet a closer examination of policy developments reveals marked differences in the way actors have pursued their interests to shape policy outcomes. This paper discusses both models in detail, exploring the ways political interests became involved in the policymaking process. …
The Humanitarian Aid Regime In The Republic Of Ngos: The Fallacy Of ‘Building Back Better', Oliver Cunningham
The Humanitarian Aid Regime In The Republic Of Ngos: The Fallacy Of ‘Building Back Better', Oliver Cunningham
Josef Korbel Journal of Advanced International Studies
In recent years, the international community has questioned the efficacy of international humanitarian aid based on the lack of results following the Haiti earthquake, leading to calls for reform and broader discussions of aid effectiveness. This paper proposes the contested existence of an international humanitarian aid regime consistent with broader definitions of regimes proposed by Stephen Krasner and Bruce Bueno de Mesquita. Delving into the manifold reasons for the ineffective response to the Haiti earthquake, the humanitarian aid regime itself proved its own worst enemy. The lack of efficacy is evident through examples drawn from key elements of the humanitarian …
