Improving Working Conditions For Astronauts: An Electronic Personal Restraint System For Use In Microgravity Environments, Kevin Tait, Justin Lewis

While in microgravity, astronauts are preoccupied with physical restraint, which takes attention away from the maintenance task or scientific experiment at hand. This may directly lead to safety concerns and increased time for extravehicular activity, as well as potentially inhibit or corrupt data collection. A primary concern is the time it takes to manipulate the current restraint system. The portable foot restraint currently in use by NASA employs a series of pins in order to engage the system or release in an emergency. This requires considerable time for the user to detach, and there is an increased risk of entanglement. …

Understanding Free Radicals: Isolating Active Thylakoid Membranes And Purifying The Cytochrome B6f Complex For Superoxide Generation Studies, Jason Stofleth

All life persists in an environment that is rich in molecular oxygen. The production of oxygen free radicals, or superoxide, is a necessary consequence of the biogenesis of energy in cells. Both mitochondrial and photosynthetic electron transport chains have been found to produce superoxide associated with cell differentiation, proliferation, and cell death, thereby contributing to the effects of aging. Aerobic respiration in mitochondria consumes oxygen, whereas photosynthesis in chloroplasts or cyanobacteria produces oxygen. The increased concentration of molecular oxygen may serve to allow greater availability for the production of superoxide by cytochrome bc complexes in photosynthetic membranes compared to those …

Is Local Produce Safer? Microbiological Quality Of Fresh Lettuce And Spinach From Grocery Stores And Farmers' Markets, Emiria Soendjojo

There is a growing demand for fresh, safe, high-quality, and locally grown vegetables. This study compared microbial populations in Romaine lettuce, Bibb lettuce, and spinach procured from grocery stores and farmers’ markets throughout the course of a summer. Standard microbial techniques were used to analyze 42 samples for the presence of total aerobic mesophilic and psychrophilic bacteria; yeasts and molds; surface and internalized coliforms and Escherichia coli; and the pathogens E. coli O157:H7 and Salmonella spp. Large variations in counts were found between produce types, sampling days, and between grocery and farmers’ market samples. The diets fed to growing animals are very important to ensure that young animals have the proper nutrients available for growth. When feeding dairy heifers, a farmer’s goal is to feed a very digestible diet that will provide nutrients to keep dairy heifers healthy and allow them to grow faster, while spending less money on feed. The objective of this study was to determine whether feeding heifers diets containing dry or ensiled forage (haylage) improved digestibility. Our hypothesis was that incorporating hay into the diet of 16-week-old dairy heifers would provide a more digestible source of nutrients. For this study, …

Hospital readmission rates can be used as an indicator of the quality of health care services and can highlight high-priority research areas to ensure better health. A readmission is defined as when a patient is discharged from an acute care hospital and is admitted back to an acute care hospital in a set amount of days, with 30 days being the current national standard. On average, 19.6% of Medicare patients are readmitted to the hospital within 30 days of discharge and 56.1% within a year (Jencks, Williams, & Coleman, 2009). How do you feel when people around you start conversing in a language you do not understand? In addition to feeling ostracized, you may also wonder if they are talking about you. Participants were either talked to or not talked to in three different language conditions: English, English-Chinese, and Chinese. Participants experienced more distress when being ostracized than included by English, but they found inclusion more distressing than ostracism by English-Chinese. Additionally, more paranoid attributions were made by participants who were included, rather than ostracized by those speaking an unfamiliar language. This study is the first to show that, under …

As women take on a continuously larger role in the legal field, it has become tremendously important to study and understand the impact women are having on the judicial system. This work explores the role of women in the judiciary. Specifically, I examine the Supreme Court of the United States to find out whether women’s jurisprudence differs from that of their male colleagues. Many communities have access to such documents; however, as the available access to these collections slowly becomes unrecognized, so does the history and remembrance of the individuals and events. Understanding the origin of aerosols in the atmosphere is important because of visual pollution, climate impacts, and deleterious health effects due to the inhalation of fine particles. This research analyzed aerosols characterized by their chloride, sulfate, and nitrate content as a function of size over a 3-month period. Due to wind patterns over coal-burning power plants, a higher concentration of local sulfate pollution was expected. Aerosols were harvested on the Purdue University campus using a high-volume air sampler with glass fiber filters and a five-stage impactor that separates the aerosols into five sizes. Multiple approaches are under development to mitigate the release of potentially harmful human-generated CO2 into the atmosphere. Geologic carbon sequestration is one such process by which CO2 that would otherwise be vented to the atmosphere is liquefied, injected, and stored in the pore space of a subsurface reservoir. The Cambrian Mount Simon Sandstone (MSs) is a targeted reservoir for CO2 sequestration in the Illinois Basin. The goals of this research are to analyze a set of subsurface samples related to ongoing CO2 sequestration demonstrations in the Illinois Basin. Physics-based simulations are playing an increasingly important role in materials and device engineering, providing information that can help engineers understand current technology and optimize designs. We describe a model and simulation tool for the characterization of the interaction between surfaces with nanoscale asperities relevant in nano and micro-electromechanical systems (N/MEMS) whose operation involves periodic contacts. A mesoscale contact model was developed to characterize the interaction and adhesion between two surfaces in terms of surface topography and fundamental materials properties. The model computed the long-range van der Waals attractive forces and repulsive interactions originating from the contact between solid surface asperities. …
