Swine play an important role in the disease ecology of influenza. Having cellular receptors in common with birds and humans, swine provide opportunities for mixed infections and potential for genetic re-assortment between avian, human, and porcine influenza. Feral swine populations are rapidly expanding in both numbers and range and are increasingly coming into contact with waterfowl, humans, and agricultural operations. In this study, over 875 feral swine were sampled from six states across the United States for serologic evidence of exposure to influenza. Infant-initiated joint attention (IJA) typically emerges during the first year of life and is an important precursor of later social competence. Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) have impairments in referential communication, such as IJA, that involve sharing experiences with others through gaze and gesture. A specific pattern of smiling occurring during IJA, anticipatory smiling, may communicate preexisting positive affect to a social partner through looking at an object, smiling, and then turning the smile toward a social partner. Genome-wide studies have strongly associated a non-synonymous polymorphism (rs16969968) that changes the 398th amino acid in the nAChR α5 subunit from aspartic acid to asparagine (D398N), with greater risk for increased nicotine consumption. We have used a pentameric concatemer approach to express defined and consistent populations of α3β4α5 nAChR in Xenopus oocytes. α5(Asn-398; risk) variant incorporation reduces ACh-evoked function compared with inclusion of the common α5(Asp-398) variant without altering agonist or antagonist potencies. Unlinked α3, β4, and α5 subunits assemble to form a uniform nAChR population with pharmacological properties matching those of concatemeric α3β4* nAChRs. α5 subunit incorporation reduces α3β4* …

In the traditional survey area, which includes strata 1‒18, 20‒50, and 75‒77, the total duck population estimate was 48.6 ± 0.8 [SE] million birds. This estimate represents a 7% increase over last year's estimate of 45.6 ± 0.8 million birds and was 43% above the long-term average (1955‒2011). Estimated mallard (Anas platyrhynchos) abundance was 10.6 ± 0.3 million birds, which was 15% above the 2011 estimate of 9.2 ± 0.3 million birds and 40% above the longterm average. The Leading Economic Indicator – Nebraska (LEI-N) declined by 1.11% during June 2012. The decline in the LEI-N, which predicts economic growth in the state six months in the future, is the second in a row, signaling weakness in the Nebraska economy during the fall and winter of 2012. In particular, while the Nebraska economy is expected to grow this summer, growth will slow significantly beginning in the fall. A primary reason for the decline in the LEI-N was a rapid increase in the value of the U.S. dollar during June. The rising U.S. dollar will limit export activity by …

We present dynamical modeling of the broad-line region (BLR) in the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 50 using reverberation mapping data taken as part of the Lick AGN Monitoring Project (LAMP) 2011. We model the reverberation mapping data directly, constraining the geometry and kinematics of the BLR, as well as deriving a black hole mass estimate that does not depend on a normalizing factor or virial coefficient. We find that the geometry of the BLR in Mrk 50 is a nearly face-on thick disk, with a mean radius of 9.6^+1.2 _–0.9 light days, a width of the BLR of 6.9 …

Assessing County-Level Water Footprints Of Different Cellulosic- Biofuel Feedstock Pathways, Yi-Wen Chiu, May Wu

While agricultural residue is considered as a near-term feedstock option for cellulosic biofuels, its sustainability must be evaluated by taking water into account. This study aims to analyze the county-level water footprint for four biofuel pathways in the United States, including bioethanol generated from corn grain, stover, wheat straw, and biodiesel from soybean. The county-level blue water footprint of ethanol from corn grain, stover, and wheat straw shows extremely wide variances with a national average of 31, 132, and 139 L of water per liter biofuel (L_w/L_bf), and standard deviation of 133, 323, and 297 L …
