Rayleigh-Taylor Turbulent Mixing Simulations, Tulin Kaman Aug 2012

Rayleigh-Taylor Turbulent Mixing Simulations, Tulin Kaman

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

We study the Rayleigh-Taylor mixing layer, presenting on simulations in agreement with experimental data. This problem is an idealized subproblem of important scientific and engineering problems, for example the gravitationally induced mixing in oceanography and performance assessment for inertial confinement fusion. Engineering codes commonly achieve correct simulations through the calibration of adjustable parameters. In this sense, they are interpolative and not predictive. As computational science moves from the interpolative to the predictive and reduces the reliance on experiment the quality of decision making improves. The diagnosis of errors in a multiparameter, multiphysics setting is daunting, so we address this issue …

The Political Economy: Political Determinants Of The Macroeconomy, Ellen Key Aug 2012

The Political Economy: Political Determinants Of The Macroeconomy, Ellen Key

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Although political scientists have devoted thousands of pages to the role economic conditions play in political evaluations, less attention has been devoted to the role politics plays in explaining changes in economic behavior and the macroeconomy. Similarly, economists have spent decades studying the factors that lead to changes in macroeconomic conditions but have ignored most political variables. Linking the two literatures, I argue that in order to fully understand the economy one needs to incorporate politics--specifically presidential approval--and the media in addition to variables typically employed in macroeconomic models. This dissertation addresses three overlapping research questions. I first introduce a …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) was built to produce and study the extremely hot and dense phase of matter called Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) in which the degrees of freedom are individual partons rather than composite hadrons. Since 2000, RHIC has collided various species of particles in order to disentangle and isolate the properties of the strongly interacting QGP: p+p to set a baseline, d+Au to establish a control experiment, Au+Au to definitively create the QGP, and Cu+Cu to bridge the gap between d+Au and Au+Au. Electron-positron pairs are a particularly effective probe of the QGP because they carry …

Multidimensional Simulations Of Type Ia Supernovae And Classical Novae, Brendan Kurt Krueger Aug 2012

Multidimensional Simulations Of Type Ia Supernovae And Classical Novae, Brendan Kurt Krueger

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Explosive astrophysical phenomena have historically played a significant role in understanding the universe and our place within it. Stellar explosions are important distance indicators, allowing exploration of the structure and evolution of the universe. They also form and disperse heavy elements that are recycled into new astrophysical objects. Stellar explosions are not a uniform group; the progenitors and mechanisms of stellar explosions vary tremendously. I used multidimensional simulations to study two distinct types of explosions that are believed to result from similar progenitor systems: compact white dwarf stars that accrete matter from stellar companions. The two types of explosions I …

Tyme, Rime, Minde & Kinde: The Reverberation Of Time In Composition, Cognition & Kynde In The Book Of The Duchess, Kassim Mirza

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In Europe during the fourteenth century the perception of time was revolutionized by the invention of the mechanical clock. The device rendered the old qualitative, self referential perception of time obsolete and replaced it with a means of time reckoning abstracted from human experience. In this thesis I will analyze the influence of the emergence of the mechanical clock on Geoffrey Chaucer's earliest know work: The Book of the Duchess. I utilize close reading and numerology to interpret the relationship between the forest and the humans of the Dreamscape. Ultimately, I argue that Chaucer allocates the old qualitative perception of …

Long-Range Ordered Carbon Clusters: A Crystalline Material With Amorphous Building Blocks, Lin Wang, Bingbing Liu, Hui Li, Wenge Yang, Yang Ding, Stanislav V. Sinogeikin, Yue Meng, Zhenxian Liu, Xiao Cheng Zeng, Wendy L. Mao

Xiao Cheng Zeng Publications

Solid-state materials can be categorized by their structures into crystalline (having periodic translation symmetry), amorphous (no periodic and orientational symmetry), and quasi-crystalline (having orientational but not periodic translation symmetry) phases. Hybridization of crystalline and amorphous structures at the atomic level has not been experimentally observed. We report the discovery of a long-range ordered material constructed from units of amorphous carbon clusters that was synthesized by compressing solvated fullerenes. Using x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and quantum molecular dynamics simulation, we observed that, although carbon-60 cages were crushed and became amorphous, the solvent molecules remained intact, playing a crucial role in maintaining …

Load Sensor In An Elastomer Suspension Element, Jazmin Ley Aug 2012

Load Sensor In An Elastomer Suspension Element, Jazmin Ley

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Knowledge of the loading applied to railcar suspension elements is necessary for improved rail safety, efficiency, and for monitoring bearing health. An economical, reliable system for keeping track of both dynamic and static loads on a rail car bearing offers potential for many improvements in rail service. The difficulties of implementing such a system are considerable because the sensor must be in the bearing load path and is thus subject to all the stressors of that environment including high impact, high load, high temperature, and corrosion. This thesis describes an attempt to incorporate a load measurement system in a polyurethane …

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

INTRODUCTION: The prognosis after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) for ampullary carcinoma (AC) is superior to that of pancreatic cancer. Decisions regarding adjuvant therapy are influenced by factors such as nodal status, stage, and grade, but the influence of these individual variables on survival is unclear.

METHODS: A prospective tumor registry database was queried to identify patients who underwent PD for AC at Thomas Jefferson University between Jan 1997 and Apr 2009. The study was conducted with the approval of the institutional review board. Data were collected through review of hospital and departmental charts. Overall survival (OS) was analyzed using univariate and multivariate …

Effects Of Landing Strategy Intervention On Muscle Activation During Drop Landings, Corrie Bailey Aug 2012

Effects Of Landing Strategy Intervention On Muscle Activation During Drop Landings, Corrie Bailey

Health, Human Performance and Recreation Undergraduate Honors Theses

The purpose of this study was to examine the kinematic, kinetics, and timing of muscle activation of the hamstring and gluteal muscle groups during drop jump landings after five minutes of visual and verbal landing strategy intervention. Thirty-six university students (23.47+/- 2.77 years; 171.99 =?- 8.01 cm; 71.72 =/- 13.56 kg) volunteered to participate. A 5-minute verbal and visual feedback intervention was implemented after participants performed five drop jumps. After the 5-minute intervention, five more drop jumps were performed. The results revealed significant differences in hip and knee flexion, knee valgus, and ground reaction forces pre and post intervention [p<0.05]. In addition, muscle-firing patterns revealed the hamstrings and gluteal muscle groups achieving 20% MVIC prior to the quadriceps muscle group post intervention. The current findings revealed that a 5-minute verbal and visual intervention can elicit greater hip and knee flexion, decrease ground reaction force, and increase the activation of the hamstrings while decreasing the activation of the quadriceps, thereby lessening the likelihood of an ACL injury.

Meaningful Use And Meaningful Curricula: A Survey Of Health Informatics Programs In The U.S., Kai Koong, Madison Ngafeeson, Lai Lui

Journal Articles

The introduction of the US government’s Meaningful Use criteria carries with it many implications including the training curriculum of healthcare personnel. This study examines 108 health informatics degree programmes across the USA. First, the courses offered are identified and classified into generic classes. Next, these generic groupings are mapped to two important frameworks: the Learning to Manage Health Information (LMHI) academic framework; and the Meaningful Use criteria policy framework. Results suggest that while current curricula seemed acceptable in addressing Meaningful Use Stage 1 objective, there was insufficient evidence that these curricula could support Meaningful Use Stage 2 and …

This study investigates the use of two spectroscopic techniques, auto-fluorescence lifetime measurement (AFLM) and light reflectance spectroscopy (LRS), for detecting invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC) in human ex vivo breast specimens. AFLM used excitation at 447 nm with multiple emission wavelengths (532, 562, 632, and 644 nm), at which autofluorescence lifetimes and their weight factors were analyzed using a double exponent model. LRS measured reflectance spectra in the range of 500-840 nm and analyzed the spectral slopes empirically at several distinct spectral regions. Our preliminary results based on 93 measured locations (i.e., 34 IDC, 31 benign fibrous, 28 adipose) from 6 …

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Programs And Taxpayer Actions To Improve Personal Finances, Erica Bobbitt, Cathy F. Bowen, Robin I. Kuleck, Ronald Taverno

Journal of Extension

The income tax-filing process creates teachable moments for learning about taxes and other financial matters. Educators and volunteers from Penn State Cooperative Extension helped taxpayers file 2008 returns under Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA). Nearly 600 filers (588) completed and simultaneously received educational information about managing personal finances. This article describes the actions taxpayers took to improve their financial stability. Nearly half (48.8%) of the filers believed their understanding of taxes had increased a lot since having their taxes prepared by Penn State Cooperative Extension. Implications for Extension educators and program benefits for taxpayers and volunteers are suggested.

Department of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine Faculty Papers & Presentations

Recent studies have suggested that cancer cells behave as metabolic parasites, by inducing oxidative stress in adjacent normal fibroblasts. More specifically, oncogenic mutations in cancer cells lead to ROS production and the "secretion" of hydrogen peroxide species. Oxidative stress in stromal fibroblasts then induces their metabolic conversion into cancer-associated fibroblasts. Such oxidative stress drives the onset of autophagy, mitophagy, and aerobic glycolysis in fibroblasts, resulting in the local production of high-energy mitochondrial fuels (such as L-lactate, ketone bodies, and glutamine). These recycled nutrients are then transferred to cancer cells, where they are efficiently burned via oxidative mitochondrial metabolism (OXPHOS). We …

Elementary School Experience With Comprehension Testing May Influence Metacomprehension Accuracy Among Seventh And Eighth Graders, Keith W. Thiede, Joshua S. Redford, Jennifer Wiley, Thomas D. Griffin

Curriculum, Instruction, and Foundational Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

We explored whether exposure to different kinds of comprehension tests during elementary years influenced metacomprehension accuracy among 7th and 8th graders. This research was conducted in a kindergarten through eighth grade charter school with an expeditionary learning curriculum. In literacy instruction, teachers emphasize reading for meaning and inference building, and they regularly assess deep comprehension with summarization, discussion, dialogic reasoning and prediction activities throughout the elementary years. The school recently expanded, doubling enrollments in 7th and 8th grades. Thus, approximately half of the students had long-term exposure to the curriculum and the other half did not. …

Efficiency Estimates And Rankings Employing Data Envelopment And Stochastic Frontier Analyses: Evaluating The Management Of U.S. Public Colleges, G. Thomas Sav

Economics Faculty Publications

This paper estimates and compares operating efficiencies of publicly owned associate degree granting colleges in the United States using data envelopment analysis (DEA) and stochastic frontier analysis (SFA). Comparisons are based on panel data for 698 colleges over four academic years, 2005-09. Included are both constant and variable returns to scale DEA estimates along with half and truncated normal inefficiency SFA estimates. The values 0.56 vs. 0.45 represent the largest mean DEA-SFA efficiency differential. DEA results indicate that 13% of colleges are fully (100%) efficient while SFA puts that percentage at only 1.7%. Comparisons of rankings based on efficiency performance …
