Discounting Of Hypothetical Monetary Outcomes That Are Both Delayed And Probabilistic, Ariana Mae Vanderveldt Aug 2012

Discounting Of Hypothetical Monetary Outcomes That Are Both Delayed And Probabilistic, Ariana Mae Vanderveldt

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The value of an outcome is affected both by the delay until its receipt: delay discounting) and by the likelihood of its receipt: probability discounting). Despite being well described by the same hyperboloid function, delay and probability discounting involve fundamentally different processes, as represented by the opposite effect amount has on the degree to which delayed and probabilistic rewards are discounted. Most of the previous research has studied the discounting of delayed and of probabilistic rewards separately, with little research examining more complex situations in which the rewards are both delayed and probabilistic. In the present experiment, participants made choices …

Sensory And Cognitive Declines In Older Adults: A Longitudinal Study, Melanie Storm Bauer Aug 2012

Sensory And Cognitive Declines In Older Adults: A Longitudinal Study, Melanie Storm Bauer

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

In a recent cross-sectional study, as has been found in numerous previous studies, Sommers et al.: 2011) found that age-related declines in hearing, as assessed by pure-tone thresholds, begin around age 20 and continue across the lifespan. In another article published from the same cross-sectional dataset, Hale et al.: 2011) found that working memory ability also begins declining around age 20 and continues throughout life. The present study is a longitudinal follow-up of these two studies in which a sub-sample of older adults: ≥65 years old at the time of original testing approximately four years ago) were re-tested on sensory …

Small Audit Firms And Earnings Manipulations, Huichi Huang Aug 2012

Small Audit Firms And Earnings Manipulations, Huichi Huang

Business Administration - Dissertations

This paper examines the monitoring role of small audit firms (i.e., those with 100 or fewer clients who are subject to different levels of oversight by the PCAOB) on earnings management. Specifically, I examine the relationship between earnings manipulations and the use of small audit firms. I find that small audit firms are less able to constrain managers' opportunistic use of discretionary accruals. However I find no evidence that small audit firms are associated with real activities manipulation. By investigating a specific group of audit firms that are the smallest in the audit market, this study extends our understanding of …

Paper Towns: Sense Of Place In Industrial, Small-Town New England, 1869-1927, David William Deacon

History - Dissertations

After the Civil War, new technologies and business structures transformed the American economy and society. One area that has received much attention in the antebellum period but much less after the Civil War, is small town New England. In the late 1860s, the introduction of wood pulp paper technology transformed formerly small market and manufacturing communities into centers of heavy industry. This dissertation is a study of this transformation. It focuses on three communities: Bellows Falls, Vermont, Franklin, New Hampshire, and Turners Falls, Massachusetts.

This study examines four broad areas: the historical background of the towns, and townspeople's awareness of …

Quantification Of The Peroneus Longus Groove In Primate Cuboids: Implications For Ardipithecus Ramidus, Erin Jean Achilles Aug 2012

Quantification Of The Peroneus Longus Groove In Primate Cuboids: Implications For Ardipithecus Ramidus, Erin Jean Achilles

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Significant debate surrounds the question of locomotor pattern in the last common ancestor (LCA) of chimpanzees and humans. Traditionally, most researchers have agreed that the morphology of the LCA was similar to that of extant African apes. However, recent analyses of the foot of the possible stem hominin Ardipithecus ramidus by Lovejoy et al. (2009) suggest the earliest hominins may have possessed a locomotor pattern more similar to that of a monkey. This argument is based in part on the morphology of the groove for the peroneus longus tendon located on the cuboid bone. The orientation of this groove is …

Corrosion Studies On Thermally Sprayed Materials For Hexavalent Chromium Replacement, Ravi Dey Aug 2012

Corrosion Studies On Thermally Sprayed Materials For Hexavalent Chromium Replacement, Ravi Dey

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Electroplated hard chrome (EHC) is used for wear and corrosion resistance applications in many industries. The hexavalent chrome present in the plating baths is a major concern due to its highly carcinogenic behavior. . In addition, EHC has technological problems including micro and macro cracking, inconsistent corrosion protection, long processing time and wide differences in behavior of coatings deposited by different plating houses. Thermally sprayed (TS) cermet coatings with a hard ceramic (e.g. tungsten carbide (WC)) embedded in a ductile matrix (Co, Cr and/or Ni) are being developed as candidates for chrome replacement. Thermal spray techniques, specifically high velocity oxy-fuel …

Histomorphometric Differences In Tibial Cortical Bone Based On Sampling Location, Stepahnie Nicole Blatch Aug 2012

Histomorphometric Differences In Tibial Cortical Bone Based On Sampling Location, Stepahnie Nicole Blatch

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Histomorphometric analysis of cortical bone is often used to estimate age at death of skeletons or to make inferences about mobility in past populations. Although previous studies have indicated that remodeling is variable within a single cross-section of bone, there has been little examination of the nature of these differences in the human tibia. This study investigated whether there are differences in remodeling based on sampling location in human tibiae, specifically examining inter-quadrant differences (anterior, posterior, medial, and lateral) as well as differences between periosteal, endosteal, and midcortical sampling locations. Slides of undecalcified sections of human tibiae at midshaft (N=10) …

Breaking The Genomic Cis-Regulatory Code By An Experimental And Theoretical Analysis Of Eve Enhancer Fusions, Ah-Ram Kim Aug 2012

Breaking The Genomic Cis-Regulatory Code By An Experimental And Theoretical Analysis Of Eve Enhancer Fusions, Ah-Ram Kim

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Encoded within DNA sequence is the cis-regulatory logic responsible for controlling gene expression in metazoans. The precise and predictive decryption of this code is on going endeavor at the heart of modern genomics. Even though state of the art technologies in genomics have been generated tremendous amount of data, how the interplay of multiple transcriptional mechanisms give rise to the complex expression changes has remain elusive. This dissertation presents a theoretical model that reconstitutes even-skipped transcriptional control in silico by implementing molecular regulatory mechanisms that are essential for the even-skipped gene expression, then applies the model to even-skipped enhancer fusions …

Life's A Beach, Tammy Jean Nuzzo-Morgan Aug 2012

Life's A Beach, Tammy Jean Nuzzo-Morgan

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Abstract of the Thesis Life's A Beach by Tammy Nuzzo-Morgan Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing & Literature Stony Brook University 2012 I think the best abstract I could propose is the words by much finer poets than me. I have collected a few blurbs and think they express what this collection of poetry is all about. Tammy's is an expression of homage to Frank O'Hara, Whitman, Ginsberg and other poets of the orgasmic line, but at the same time, we realize, Emily Dickinson would have walked to Long Island to embrace such a spiritual sister. William Heyen These …

Morphological Correlates Of Primate Hallucal Grasping, Katherine Elizabeth Goodenberger Aug 2012

Morphological Correlates Of Primate Hallucal Grasping, Katherine Elizabeth Goodenberger

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Primates are unusual among mammals in having a well-developed hallucal grasping mechanism. Hallucal grasping has been featured in many adaptive scenarios of primate evolution. Some authors have suggested that primates possess more powerful hallucal grasping than non-primate euarchontans and that there are variations in hallucal grasping power and grasping type among primates. In these scenarios, powerful grasping is associated with the use of different substrate size and orientation and some authors have argued that these differences should be reflected in the morphology of the hallucal metatarsal (Mt1). Using data taken from the primate behavior literature, this thesis examines the morphology …

Cis-Regulatory Contributions To The Regulation Of Sloppy-Paired 1 Transcription Initiation And Elongation, Saiyu Hang Aug 2012

Cis-Regulatory Contributions To The Regulation Of Sloppy-Paired 1 Transcription Initiation And Elongation, Saiyu Hang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The expression of the sloppy-paired 1 (slp1) gene in the gastrula stage Drosophila embryo is controlled by the interplay of four transcription factors Runt, Even-skipped (Eve), Fushi-tarazu (Ftz), and Odd-paired (Opa) with two distinct cis-regulatory enhancer elements, the distal early stripe element (DESE) and the proximal early stripe element (PESE). The stripe pattern of slp1 is the result of non-additive interactions between these two enhancers and is context-dependent. Using chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) to examine a number of reporter constructs, I found DESE mediates Runt dependent activation by facilitating pre-initiation complex formation on the slp1 promoter. This DESE-dependent activation is influenced …

Algorithms And Interfaces For Automated Non-Visual Skimming, Faisal Ahmed Aug 2012

Algorithms And Interfaces For Automated Non-Visual Skimming, Faisal Ahmed

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In our information-driven web-based society, we are all gradually falling victims to information overload [9]. However, while sighted people are finding ways to sift through information faster, computer users who are blind are experiencing an even greater information overload. These users access computers and Internet using screen-reader software, which reads the information on a computer screen sequentially using computer-generated speech through an audio interface and allows users to navigate using keyboard shortcuts or gestures. This interface does not give them an opportunity to know what content to skip and what to listen to. So, they either listen to all of …

Indentation Analysis Of Transversely Isotropic Materials, Talapady Srivatsa Bhat Aug 2012

Indentation Analysis Of Transversely Isotropic Materials, Talapady Srivatsa Bhat

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Instrumented indentation, as a tool for characterization of mechanical properties, has well been established in the past decades. Studies have been conducted to understand the behavior of isotropic materials under indentation and techniques to accurately predict isotropic material properties have also been reported. Further, within the isotropic regime, work has been done to predict the indentation hardness without having to investigate the area of contact during indentation. Studies have also reported the prospect of utilizing indentation to predict the fatigue behavior of isotropic materials. This dissertation is made with the intent of extending the use of indentation, as a characterization …

Transmembrane Domain Structure And Function In The Erythropoietin Receptor, Ian Christopher Brett Aug 2012

Transmembrane Domain Structure And Function In The Erythropoietin Receptor, Ian Christopher Brett

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Activation of the erythropoietin receptor (EpoR) by the soluble cytokine erythropoietin (Epo) is essential for the differentiation of erythrocyte progenitors and their development into red blood cells. The single transmembrane (TM) helix of the EpoR mediates dimerization of the receptor in the inactive state and is responsible for coupling ligand binding to activation of an intracellular Janus kinase. Neither the structure of the inactive dimer nor the structural changes in the TM region that occur upon ligand binding are known. This work presents the solution NMR structures of peptides corresponding to the TM and juxtamembrane (JM) sequences that bridge the …

Novel Ways To Generate Polypropionates For The Synthesis Of Polyketide Natural Products, Matthew Calder Aug 2012

Novel Ways To Generate Polypropionates For The Synthesis Of Polyketide Natural Products, Matthew Calder

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Novel Ways to Generate Polypropionates for the Synthesis of Polyketide Natural Products by Matthew Edward Calder Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry Stony Brook University 2012 Polyketide natural products are desirable targets due to their interesting biological and pharmacological properties. Polyketides contain synthetically challenging propionate subunits, which are comprised of alternating methyl and hydroxyl stereogenic centers. The synthesis of polypropionate subunits is the central theme of this work. The first project focused on employing the stereopentad and stereotetrad of the broad-spectrum antibiotic oleandomycin for the total synthesis of the polyketide natural product discodermolide. Our strategy involved a deconstruction/reconstruction process to access …

The Effects Of Habitat And Predation On Bay Scallop Populations In New York, John Michael Carroll Aug 2012

The Effects Of Habitat And Predation On Bay Scallop Populations In New York, John Michael Carroll

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Bay scallops once supported a vibrant fishery on Long Island. Populations crashed in the mid 1980s due to a series of brown tides, and while blooms haven't occurred within the Peconic Estuary since 1995, scallops have not naturally recovered. Concomitant with the loss of scallops due to the blooms was the disappearance of eelgrass, often called the "preferred" scallop habitat, possibly explaining the lack of recovery. Current restoration efforts have produced over 6 million scallops for deployment to the estuaries, leading to significant increases in the local scallop population. However, it is possible that the loss of seagrass might limit …

Representation Theory Of Categorified Quantum Sl2, Eitan Chatav Aug 2012

Representation Theory Of Categorified Quantum Sl2, Eitan Chatav

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Quantum sl2 gives rise to the Jones polynomial knot invariant. One of the insights of categorification is that this 3-dimensional picture is a shadow, the decategorification, of a 4-dimensional picture. Thus, the categorification of quantum sl2 gives rise through its representation theory to Khovanov homology, the categorification of the Jones polynomial. In the 3-dimensional picture, the algebra of Temperley-Lieb diagrams, used in the construction of the Jones polynomial, gives a graphical calculus for intertwiners of the representations of quantum sl2. We show that the algebra of Bar-Natan's dotted cobordisms, used in the construction of Khovanov homology, gives a graphical calculus …

On The Border Line Of Tragedy: White Slavery, Moral Protection, And The Travelers' Aid Society Of New York, 1885-1917, Eric Cimino Aug 2012

On The Border Line Of Tragedy: White Slavery, Moral Protection, And The Travelers' Aid Society Of New York, 1885-1917, Eric Cimino

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation examines the travelers' aid movement of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries through a case study of the Travelers' Aid Society of New York. Travelers' aid was part of a larger movement for moral reform that arose as a response to social problems unleashed by industrialization, urban growth, and mass immigration. Moral reformers believed that vices such as prostitution were wreaking havoc on individuals, communities, and, consequently, on the national fabric. To combat prostitution, reformers launched a variety of campaigns in both the United States and Europe, one of which targeted a practice known as "white slavery, …

Design And Performance Considerations For Vehicular Network Access, Pralhad Dinesh Deshpande Aug 2012

Design And Performance Considerations For Vehicular Network Access, Pralhad Dinesh Deshpande

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The `Connected Car' concept has gained considerable interest in recent years from the car manufacturers. The `Connected Car' is envisioned to be connected to the Internet over wireless data networks enabling services like remote vehicle monitoring and diagnostics, real-time navigational assistance, sensor data collection and access to Internet media on the go. Although cellular data connectivity is largely ubiquitous in the developed world, it provides limited bandwidth and is quite expensive. Also, licensed spectrum is a scarce resource and cellular network providers are constantly faced with the challenge of providing good performance to an ever increasing user base. We posit …

Expression And Function Of Rest In Oligodendrocyte Lineage Cells, Lisa Marie Dewald Aug 2012

Expression And Function Of Rest In Oligodendrocyte Lineage Cells, Lisa Marie Dewald

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The RE1-silencing transcription factor (REST) regulates the expression of neural specific genes by acting as a transcriptional repressor in non-neuronal cells. REST binds to repressor elements (RE1s) in the DNA and recruits histone deacetylases (HDACs) and other histone modifying and chromatin remodeling proteins through its corepressors mSin3 and CoREST. RE1s are located on a large number of genes that are required for the development and maintenance of the neuronal phenotype and are normally repressed in non-neural cells. By regulating gene expression, REST participates in the orderly developmental transition from a neuroepithelial precursor or stem cell to a functional neuron. Glial …

Examining The Ecological Role Of White Perch (Morone Americana) Using Acoustic Telemetry In The Great South Bay Estuary, New York., Martha Marie Divver

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Acoustic telemetry was used to investigate movement and behavior of the semi-anadromous white perch (Morone americana) in the Great South Bay system. Fifteen Vemco?? VR2 acoustic receivers were deployed in the Carmans River and another fifteen were placed in tributaries throughout the Bay. Forty fish were tagged with Vemco?? V9 acoustic transmitters from August 2010 - 2011, fifteen of which returned 28+ days of movement data. Spatial use of the River varied seasonally with an expanded range during autumn and spring and contracted range during summer and winter. Both residential and dispersive individuals existed within the population, suggesting connectivity between …

Automatic Mesh Generation And Processing For Biomedical Geometries, Volodymyr Dyedov Aug 2012

Automatic Mesh Generation And Processing For Biomedical Geometries, Volodymyr Dyedov

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Introduction of advantages of fluid dynamics simulations into clinical practice depends on ability to quickly create patient-specific computational models from computed tomography or magnetic resonance images with minimal human interaction. Our research addresses three steps in this process. First is identifying lung airways in radiological images. Our approach is based on a combination of geometric analysis of gradient vector flow and graph-based algorithms. Second is a novel method for robust and efficient computation of medial curves for complex biomedical geometries. This algorithm is based on three key concepts: a local orthogonal decomposition of geometry into substructures, a differential concept called …

Regulation Of Isg54-Mediated Apoptosis By Antioxidants Prdx5 And Sod2, Mel Pilar Espaillat Aug 2012

Regulation Of Isg54-Mediated Apoptosis By Antioxidants Prdx5 And Sod2, Mel Pilar Espaillat

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Interferons (IFNs) are the most potent mediators of antiviral activities in the immune system. Viral molecular patterns are detected by receptors of the innate immune system, resulting in IFN production and subsequent IFN-stimulated gene (ISG) expression. The production of IFN serves as a danger signal that triggers a cascade of molecular events in the cell for the induction of antiviral mechanisms. The ISG products protect cells against viral replication, induce anti-proliferative mechanisms, and modulate the development of innate and adaptive immunity. The expression of ISG54 is mediated by type I IFN signaling and results in inducement of apoptosis via a …
