This article explores the forgotten manifesto The City of Man: A Declaration on World Democracy, which was composed in 1940 by a group of prominent American and European anti-isolationist intellectuals, including Thomas Mann, Reinhold Niebuhr, and Hermann Broch. Written in response to the victories of Nazi Germany, the manifesto declared that the United States had a new global responsibility not only to lead the war against fascism and Marxism, but also to establish a global order of peace and democracy under U.S. hegemony. Further Evidence For Large Central Mass-To-Light Ratios In Early-Type Galaxies: The Case Of Ellipticals And Lenticulars In The A262 Cluster, G. A. Wegner, E. M. Corsini, J. Thomas, R. P. Saglia

We present new radially resolved spectroscopy of eight early-type galaxies in the A262 cluster. The measurements include stellar rotation, velocity dispersion, H ₃ and H ₄ coefficients of the line-of-sight velocity distribution along the major and minor axes and an intermediate axis as well as line-strength index profiles of Mg, Fe, and Hβ. The ionized-gas velocity and velocity dispersion is measured for six sample galaxies along different axes. We derive dynamical mass-to-light ratios and dark matter densities from orbit-based dynamical models, complemented by the galaxies' ages, metallicities, and α-element abundances from single stellar-population models. A Water Quality Investigation Of Kimages Creek, Michael Trop

Analysis of continuous monitoring water quality data (temperature, specific conductivity, depth, pH, dissolved oxygen, and turbidity) at two locations in a tidal freshwater creek (Kimages Creek) characterized seasonal variation and responses to short-term events. Supplemental water quality measurements were collected to describe longitudinal variations in the creek. There were significant differences in water quality between the two continuous monitoring stations (one tidal and unforested, the other non-tidal and forested) over varying time scales. Rain events showed increases in turbidity, depth and dissolved oxygen, and reductions in temperature, conductivity, and pH at both stations. Tides influenced the water quality at the …

Prostate cancer is the leading non-cutaneous malignancy affecting men in the United States. One in every six men will be affected by prostate cancer. Due to the high incidence of prostate cancer, there is a need to develop biomarkers capable of identifying tumors from benign prostatic lesions. miRNAs are small molecules that regulate protein translation and impact cellular integrity when dysregulated. It is widely thought that miRNAs have the potential to serve as biomarkers. This study utilizes a unique combinatorial analysis of miRNA dysregulation to identify key miRNAs involved in prostate tumor initiation, progression and metastasis. Tissue engineering scaffolds come in many shapes and sizes, however, due to difficulty manufacturing the microstructure architecture required in tissue engineering, most scaffolds are architecturally non-dynamic in nature. Because the microstructural architecture of all biological tissues is inherently complicated, non-dynamic tissue engineering scaffolds tend to be a poor platform for tissue regeneration. The current method for manufacturing dynamic tissue engineering scaffolds involves electrospinning successive layers of different fibers, an approach that exhibits no fiber transition between layers and subsequent delamination problems. Mixed integer programming (MIP) problems are highly parameterized, and finding parameter settings that achieve high performance for specific types of MIP instances is challenging. This paper presents a method to find the information about how CPLEX solver parameter settings perform for the different classes of mixed integer linear programs by using designed experiments and statistical models. Fitting a model through design of experiments helps in finding the optimal region across all combinations of parameter settings. The study involves recognizing the best parameter settings that results in the best performance for a specific class of instances. Choosing good setting has a …

From the beginnings of qualitative research in the late 19th century to today, researchers have struggled to make sense of the notion of self or subjectivity; in other words, the I in the research. We ask ourselves: Who is the researcher? How is their notion of self present during research? How is research a site for contested notions of self? Who is the I in qualitative research?

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this study is to examine the complexities of recruiting overweight and obese adolescent boys for qualitative research, discuss specific recruitment considerations for this population, and offer guidance to researchers interested in recruiting overweight adolescent boys. Three overweight adolescent boys and six community professionals participated in this study. Data collection methods included fieldwork observations (60 hours) and person-centered interviews (N=9). Emergent themes revealed that establishing trust, understanding the sensitivities of discussing obesity, and considering adolescent boys’ fears of sharing personal information may have enhanced recruitment success. Researchers should consider the importance of building relationships with professionals who can …

The common policy of treating sexually exploited minors as criminals represents a fundamental failing of the justice system. Prostituted minors should not be treated as delinquents requiring discipline but rather as severely traumatized and abused victims requiring specialized services and counseling. Yet, in most states, prostituted minors are re-traumatized through arrest, prosecution, and detention instead of receiving specialized services. Besides being unjust, this policy is counter-productive. On December 23, 2010, the Secretary of the Department of the Interior, Ken Salazar, issued Secretarial Order No. 3310, commonly referred to as the Wild Lands Policy. The Wild Lands Policy established a two-step process through which the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), an agency within the Department of the Interior, was to inventory and to manage its lands with wilderness characteristics (LWCs). The policy continued the requirement that the BLM maintain a current inventory of LWCs and evaluate these LWCs during the previously established land use planning process. Social Movements And Free Riders: Examining Resource Mobilization Theory Through The Bolivian Water War, J.P. Weismuller

Mancur Olson's free rider problem suggests that self-interested individuals would be more rational to abstain from rather than participate in collective action. This possibility is particularly problematic for social movement theories attempting to account for movement emergence. In this essay, I critique resource mobilization theory's solution to Olson's problem, arguing that its "elite support hypothesis" cannot account for the emergence of entirely grassroots movements. However, through an analysis of the Bolivian Water War, I ultimately suggest that resource mobilization theory can be salvaged. I claim that a distinction between "vertical" and "horizontal" organizations allows resource mobilization theory to maintain its …

The Macalester Review

An interesting problem in professional basketball is predicting how long a player remains in the NBA League. Previous research on this problem has focused on factors such as race, performance in games, and size. We propose to analyze career duration in the NBA based on awards won, position played and biological variables such as height. Using Accelerated Failure Time models, Cox Proportional Hazards models and Kaplan-Meier analyses, we determine that both height and number of awards won lengthen career duration; however, only certain player positions significantly affect career length of a player.

Does The Equity Market Affect Economic Growth?, Kwame D. Fynn

The Macalester Review

This paper examines the impact of the stock market primarily on economic growth using panel data from 1990-2010. I apply Generalized Least Squares techniques for fixed effects with the exclusion of the subgroup 2005-2010 which uses random effects. The effect of the stock market on growth is based on country-specific effects and varies in different time periods.
