Genomic Characteristics Of An Environmental Microbial Community Harboring A Novel Human Uncultured Tm7 Bacterium Associated With Oral Diseases, Michael Abrams, David Barton, Eamon Vandaei, Diana Romero, Adam Caldwell, Cleber C. Ouverney

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

The diversity of prokaryotes associated with humans has been dominated by uncultured species (not isolated in pure culture). For instance, nearly 80% of the human gut and 68% of the human oral microbes are thought to be uncultured; some of which have been associated with human oral, digestive, vaginal, and cardiovascular diseases. The revalence of uncultured pathogens is expected to continue to increase within the near future. In fact, public databases such as GenBank have nearly quadrupled the number of candidate phyla (those made entirely of uncultured organisms) since the 1980s and currently lists many new lineages of unclassified Bacteria …

The Impact Of Dams, Droughts, And Tributary Drainages On Channel Form And Process : Rio Grande And Rio Chama, Nm, Benjamin Swanson Aug 2012

The Impact Of Dams, Droughts, And Tributary Drainages On Channel Form And Process : Rio Grande And Rio Chama, Nm, Benjamin Swanson

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

A guiding principle in river science maintains that channel systems evolve to convey the sediment loads and water discharges imposed upon them. Changes in sediment and water inputs may result in adjustments to channel geometry, bed texture, and related parameters. Over the last century, geomorphic processes along the Middle Rio Grande and one of its major tributaries, the Rio Chama, NM, have been altered by intensified land and water management and climate change. Using a GIS, channel characteristics were digitized from georeferenced photographs and analyzed, with particular attention to quantifying measurement error. Along the Rio Grande, average channel widths decreased …

Higher Order Symmetries Of The Kdv Equation, Ian M. Anderson Aug 2012

Higher Order Symmetries Of The Kdv Equation, Ian M. Anderson

Research Vignettes

In this worksheet we symbolically construct the formal inverse of the total derivative operator and use it to construct the recursion operator for the higher-order symmetries of the KdV equation. Using this recursion operator we generate the first 5 generalized symmetries of the KdV equation and verify that they all commute.

Indirect Detection Signals Beyond The Simplest Supersymmetric Dark Matter, Katherine Richardson Aug 2012

Indirect Detection Signals Beyond The Simplest Supersymmetric Dark Matter, Katherine Richardson

Physics & Astronomy ETDs

Indirect detection of gamma rays, neutrinos and charged cosmic rays from dark matter annihilation sheds light on the identity of dark matter and compliments direct detection and collider dark matter searches. By testing for the annihilation rate as well as the elastic scattering cross section of dark matter and nucleons, indirect detection can probe beyond the standard neutralino dark matter candidate. In particular, annihilation product phenomenology is a tool for the exploration of the dark matter connection to the neutrino sector. The well-motivated U(1)_{B-L} extension of the Minimal Supersymmetric Model (MSSM) naturally includes the neutrino sector to explain neutrino masses …

Urology Faculty Publications

Background

Clinical dogma is that healthy urine is sterile and the presence of bacteria with an inflammatory response is indicative of urinary tract infection (UTI). Asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU) represents the state in which bacteria are present but the inflammatory response is negligible. Differentiating ABU from UTI is diagnostically challenging, but critical because overtreatment of ABU can perpetuate antimicrobial resistance while undertreatment of UTI can result in increased morbidity and mortality. In this study, we describe key characteristics of the healthy and ABU urine microbiomes utilizing 16S rRNA gene (16S rDNA) sequencing and metaproteomics, with the future goal of utilizing this …

Atypical Development Of The Cerebellum : Impact On Language Function, Lynette M. Silva Aug 2012

Atypical Development Of The Cerebellum : Impact On Language Function, Lynette M. Silva

Psychology ETDs

Children born very low birth weight (VLBW; <1800 grams) and/or preterm (<33 weeks gestation) frequently have cerebellar hypoplasia, and a constellation of cognitive deficits. The cerebellum, now shown to be involved in many non-motor functions, has a protracted maturation process similar to the frontal lobes, and new evidence suggests the cerebellum may be more vulnerable to environmental factors than subject to genetics. However, relationships between specific cerebellar structures and cognitive functions have not been extensively investigated. We examined relationships between the volume of four cerebellar regions of interest (ROI) and language performance in two age samples: 27 participants between 16 and 20 months of age and 20 participants between 3 and 4 years old. Language performance was significantly different between VLBW and control groups in both age samples. No significant relationships were evident between language performance and ROI volume in the 18-month-old sample. Anterior vermis volume was significantly correlated with VIQ scores in only the 3-year-old VLBW group, in the absence of a significant group difference in anterior vermis volume. This correlation remained significant in the VLBW group, even when controlling for number of days on ventilation. In terms of predicting group membership, VIQ was the most significant predictor in the 3-year-old sample, with increased specificity when adding right dentate nucleus volume. In terms of predicting VIQ scores, ethnicity was the most significant predictor for the control group, but days of ventilation along with anterior vermis volume best predicted VIQ in the VLBW group. The possibility of a differential relationship between anterior vermis volume and language ability in VLBW children, possibly emerging between 18 months and 3 years of age, may have implications for development of interventions, particularly given environmental vulnerability and the protracted cerebellar maturation process.

Mindfulness And Emotion In Relationships : Emotion Regulation, Empathy, And Affect As Mediators Of The Association Between Mindfulness And Relationship Satisfaction, Kathryn T. Wiggins Aug 2012

Mindfulness And Emotion In Relationships : Emotion Regulation, Empathy, And Affect As Mediators Of The Association Between Mindfulness And Relationship Satisfaction, Kathryn T. Wiggins

Psychology ETDs

With increasing frequency over the past 25 years, mindfulness has been linked with health and psychological wellbeing. Recently it has also been linked with healthy interpersonal relationships. The present cross-sectional study of 331 diverse adults tested a proposed model for understanding the association between mindfulness and relationship satisfaction through the effects of three concepts related to emotion: emotion regulation, empathy and positivity (ratio of positive to negative affect). Perspective taking, a cognitive aspect of empathy, and positivity partially mediated the association between both mindfulness and relationship satisfaction and mindfulness facet nonreactivity and relationship satisfaction. Positivity emerged as the strongest mediator …

Tucker Student Center Dedication Brings Hundreds To Gardner-Webb, Office Of University Communications

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

In 2010, Gardner-Webb received the largest donation in the University’s history when the Tucker family gave a $5 million gift toward the construction of a new student center. On Tuesday, over two years later, GWU welcomed the Tuckers and other notable guests to the ribbon cutting and open house of the Tucker Student Center as it was unveiled to the community. And Bob Tucker took everyone by surprise when, at the conclusion of the dedication ceremony, he announced his intent to donate even more money to the University.

A Truly Embedded Test Structure For Design-For-Manufacturability, Hardware Security And Vlsi Testing, Charles D. Lamech Aug 2012

A Truly Embedded Test Structure For Design-For-Manufacturability, Hardware Security And Vlsi Testing, Charles D. Lamech

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

As the feature sizes continue to shrink in advanced VLSI technologies, the impact of process variations on yield losses has become significant. Moreover, the process variations in path delays are increasingly dependent on circuit context. Given this 'neighborhood' dependence, characterization of path delays is best carried out using embedded techniques applied to actual product macros, as opposed to scribe line test structures or embedded ring oscillators (RO). In addition to characterizing performance, such delay measurement techniques can be used to improve model-to-hardware correlation. Furthermore, these techniques can also be used in several contexts including defect detection, post-silicon debug and hardware-security. …

Growth, Processing And Chracterization Of Gallium Nitride Based Coaxial Leds Grown By Movpe, Ashwin Rishinaramangalam Aug 2012

Growth, Processing And Chracterization Of Gallium Nitride Based Coaxial Leds Grown By Movpe, Ashwin Rishinaramangalam

Electrical and Computer Engineering ETDs

Gallium nitride (GaN) based coaxial (core-shell type) light emitting diodes (LEDs) offer a wide range of advantages. The active region of these LEDs is located on non-polar, {1-100} m-plane GaN sidewalls, which helps eliminate the quantum confined Stark effect (QCSE) and improve the radiative recombination efficiency of LEDs. The recent evolution of a catalyst free, scalable, repeatable and industrially viable device quality GaN nanowire and nanowall metal organic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) growth process has enhanced the possibility of these LEDs going into production from laboratory. Previous work has shown that these nanowires exhibited an intense photoluminescence (PL), in spite …
