Measuring Infertility In Populations: Constructing A Standard Definition For Use With Demographic And Reproductive Health Surveys, Maya N. Mascarenhas, Hoiwan Cheung, Colin D. Mathers, Gretchen A. Stevens Aug 2012

Measuring Infertility In Populations: Constructing A Standard Definition For Use With Demographic And Reproductive Health Surveys, Maya N. Mascarenhas, Hoiwan Cheung, Colin D. Mathers, Gretchen A. Stevens

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background: Infertility is a significant disability, yet there are no reliable estimates of its global prevalence. Studies on infertility prevalence define the condition inconsistently, rendering the comparison of studies or quantitative summaries of the literature difficult. This study analyzed key components of infertility to develop a definition that can be consistently applied to globally available household survey data.

Methods: We proposed a standard definition of infertility and used it to generate prevalence estimates using 53 Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS). The analysis was restricted to the subset of DHS that contained detailed fertility information collected through the reproductive health calendar. …

A Comparison Of Traditional And Bayesian Statistical Models In Fluvial Sediment Transport, Mark L. Schmelter, David King Stevens Aug 2012

A Comparison Of Traditional And Bayesian Statistical Models In Fluvial Sediment Transport, Mark L. Schmelter, David King Stevens

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

The characterization of sediment transport is an important problem that has been actively studied for some time. Numerous approaches have been demonstrated in the literature, including mechanistic models, probabilistic arguments, machine learning algorithms, and empirical formulations. Most implementations of sediment transport relations are deterministic in nature and require the specification of model parameters. These parameters are traditionally assumed fixed (i.e., a single value), and subsequent predictions are not necessarily representative because of uncertainty because they are fixed (i.e., a line). In this paper, a Bayesian statistical sediment transport model is presented, and its ability to infer critical shear values from …

College Women’S Experiences Of Intimate Partner Violence: Exploring Mental Health Issues, F. Scott Christopher, Tiffani S. Kisler Aug 2012

College Women’S Experiences Of Intimate Partner Violence: Exploring Mental Health Issues, F. Scott Christopher, Tiffani S. Kisler

Human Development and Family Science Faculty Publications

College women’s experiences with sexual and physical violence are so common that campus interventions are needed. To help guide these, we surveyed 339 college women and asked: (a) are college women’s experiences with different types of relational violence interrelated and (b) are there patterns of association between types of violence and mental health symptoms? Analyses showed that experiences with verbal aggression, and minor and major physical violence overlapped. Experiences of sexual assault and minor physical violence also co-occurred. Moreover, women who encountered verbal and physical, but not sexual violence, suffered from symptoms of hostility, anxiety, and depression; those who encountered …

The Role Of Meis1 In Hematopoietic Development, Mi Cai Aug 2012

The Role Of Meis1 In Hematopoietic Development, Mi Cai

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Previous work has identified Mesp1 as an important regulator of the epithelial–mesenchymal transition: EMT) and of cardiovascular cell fate in differentiating embryonic stem cells: ESCs). To understand the molecular mechanisms underlying the actions of Mesp1, we sought to identify transcription targets of Mesp1. Mesp1 rapidly induced expression of PDGFRα in differentiating ESCs and directly bound to evolutionary conserved E-boxes within the PDGFRα promoter. This result suggested that PDGFRα could be a direct target of Mesp1. However, we found that PDGFRα was not sufficient for the induction of EMT in ESCs or the induction of Flk1+ mesoderm, but that it may …

Reading Your Own Mind: Dynamic Visualization Of Real-Time Neural Signals, Zachary V. Freudenburg Aug 2012

Reading Your Own Mind: Dynamic Visualization Of Real-Time Neural Signals, Zachary V. Freudenburg

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Brain Computer Interfaces: BCI) systems which allow humans to control external devices directly from brain activity, are becoming increasingly popular due to dramatic advances in the ability to both capture and interpret brain signals. Further advancing BCI systems is a compelling goal both because of the neurophysiology insights gained from deriving a control signal from brain activity and because of the potential for direct brain control of external devices in applications such as brain injury recovery, human prosthetics, and robotics. The dynamic and adaptive nature of the brain makes it difficult to create classifiers or control systems that will remain …

Contract Law In A Comparative Perspective, Suharnoko Suharnoko Aug 2012

Contract Law In A Comparative Perspective, Suharnoko Suharnoko

Indonesia Law Review

Media reports on cases of the theft of pre-paid pulses taking place nowadays have created a misunderstanding in terms of the appropriate application of criminal law. In the context of existing legal provisions concerning consumer protection as set forth both under the Consumer Protection Law as well as in part under the Telecommunications Law, law enforcement agencies are leaning towards applying general criminal provisions (theft) which, after a careful observation of the Indonesian Criminal Code, in fact do not extend to corporate criminal acts. This paper purports to explain that the currently occurring cases of the theft of pre-paid pulses …

Challenges Of Permitting Ballast Water Discharges From Commercial Vessels In U.S. Waters, Paul Rodriguez Aug 2012

Challenges Of Permitting Ballast Water Discharges From Commercial Vessels In U.S. Waters, Paul Rodriguez

Theses

On February 5, 2009, the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) issued the Vessel General Permit (VGP), under the Clean Water Act (CWA), for discharges incidental to the normal operation of vessels, including ballast water discharges. This set forth permit requirements for most commercial vessel discharges within 3 nautical miles of U.S. shore. Since it will expire in December 2013, the US EPA recently issued a draft 2013 VGP. One of the significant changes is the proposal of numerical ballast water discharge standards requiring most commercial vessels to install ballast water treatment systems onboard.

The objective of this thesis is …

Utilization Of A Tropospheric-Stratospheric Lidar System To Study Mountain Induced Gravity Waves Over Jenny Jump State Forest, Anthony Teti Aug 2012

Utilization Of A Tropospheric-Stratospheric Lidar System To Study Mountain Induced Gravity Waves Over Jenny Jump State Forest, Anthony Teti

Theses

Gravity waves are a dominant driver of the middle and lower atmospheric circulation. Yet such waves have been difficult to study due to their inherent small spatial and temporal scales and synoptic occurrence, and thus require advanced experimental systems. In this thesis first results are presented from a newly constructed tropospheric-stratospheric lidar operating at the New Jersey Institute of Technology-United Astronomy Clubs of New Jersey site in Jenny Jump State Forest in northwest New Jersey. The system utilizes a 4-W 532-nm Nd:YAG laser transmitter and a 4-inch telescope receiver to collect backscattered photons from the lower atmosphere in order to …

Gpu Implementation Of Block Transforms, Boyan Zhang Aug 2012

Gpu Implementation Of Block Transforms, Boyan Zhang

Theses

Traditionally, intensive floating-point computational ability of Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) has been mainly limited for rendering and visualization application by architecture and programming model. However, with increasing programmability and architecture progress, GPUs inherent massively parallel computational ability have become an essential part of today's mainstream general purpose (non-graphical) high performance computing system. It has been widely reported that adapted GPU-based algorithms outperform significantly their CPU counterpart.

The focus of the thesis is to utilize NVIDIA CUDA GPUs to implement orthogonal transforms such as signal dependent Karhunen-Loeve Transform and signal independent Discrete Cosine Transform. GPU architecture and programming model are examined. …

Ergonomic Evaluation Of Shoulder Muscle Activation During Light Weight Hand Tool Exertion Task, Gul Ahmed Aug 2012

Ergonomic Evaluation Of Shoulder Muscle Activation During Light Weight Hand Tool Exertion Task, Gul Ahmed

Theses

A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of shoulder muscle activation during hand exertion tasks using a light weight hand tool by working individuals. Electromyography (EMG) of trapezius, supraspinatus, triceps, and pectoralis major was conducted for 45°, 0° and -45° arm angles, for three different reaches i.e. normal, maximum and extreme and three different push forces low, medium and high. Ten volunteers participated in the experimental study. The effects of push force and reach distance were found to be statistically significant for all four muscles. However the effect of change of angle was not found to be statistically significant, …

Food Stamps Grow Urban Gardens, Daniel Bowman Simon Aug 2012

Food Stamps Grow Urban Gardens, Daniel Bowman Simon

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Plants and seeds can be purchased with SNAP (formerly Food Stamps, renamed Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP in 2008,) but most current SNAP participants are unaware. Nearly four decades ago, in 1973, Alabama Senator James Allen championed an amendment to allow the purchase of food-producing plants and seeds with Food Stamps. The Senate passed the amendment after less than ten minutes of floor debate. However, in the ensuing decades, there has not been a focused national effort to make SNAP participants raise awareness of this choice that is available to SNAP participants, nor to connect SNAP participants to resources …

Viirs Radiometric Calibration For Reflective Solar Bands: Antarctic Dome C Site And Simultaneous Nadir Overpass Observations, Slawomir Blonski, Changyong Cao, Sirish Uprety, Xi Shao

The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)

VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite), one of five instruments onboard the recently launched Suomi NPP (National Polar-orbiting Partnership) satellite, acquired its first measurements in November 2011. To achieve the required quality of the radiometrically and geometrically corrected sensor data records, VIIRS performance and accuracy of its data products are continuously evaluated. Since the finding of an accelerated degradation of VIIRS sensitivity in selected spectral bands, frequent monitoring of VIIRS radiometric performance became even more essential. In the presented work, we used two methods to evaluate radiometric calibration of the VIIRS sensor data records: (1) imaging of radiometrically stable Earth’s …

Preliminary Comparison Of Radiometric Calibration Performance Among Cris, Airs And Iasi Using Gsics Geo-Leo Inter-Calibration, Fangfang Yu, Xiangqian Wu, Yong Han

The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)

The Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) instrument, one of the key payloads onboard the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) launched on Oct., 28, 2011, will provide well-calibrated high-spectral resolution data to enhance the weather forecasting models and also to improve the understanding of the climate phenomena. In this study, we evaluate and compare the overall radiometric calibration accuracy of CrIS with those of the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) on Aqua and the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) on Metop-A using the GEO(geostationary)-LEO(Low Earth orbit) inter-calibration technique developed in the Global Space-based Inter-Calibration System (GSICS) project. This GSICS GEO-LEO inter-calibration is based …

Cross-Track Infrared Sounder (Cris) Instrument In-Flight Performance, Vladimir Zavyalov, Gail Bingham, Mark Esplin, Mark Greenman, Deron Scott, Brandon Graham, Charles Major, Lee Phillips

The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)

The Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) sensor was launched on the Suomi NPP spacecraft October 28, 2011. The CrIS sensor is a Michelson interferometer with a 3 x 3 detectors for each of three spectral bands: LWIR 650-1095 wavenumbers, MWIR 1210-1750 wavenumbers and SWIR 2155-2550 wavenumbers. The CrIS sensor is performing very well and is generally exceeding the noise, radiometric and spectral performance requirements for its primary weather sensing mission. However, for climate change applications it becomes useful to push the radiometric calibration accuracy to the highest possible accuracy. The CrIS sensor is not actively temperature controlled so the sensor temperature …

Assessment Of Cris Radiometric Accuracy Using Community Radiative Transfer Model (Crtm) And Double Difference Approach, Yong Chen, Yong Han, Fuzhong Weng

The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)

The Cross-track infrared Sounder (CrIS) on Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership Satellite (NPP), is a very important Fourier transform spectrometer, and provides soundings of the atmosphere with 1305 channels. These soundings information will be used to enhance weather forecast and will help improve understanding of climate change. Quantifying the CrIS radiometric accuracy and creating a calibration link with other hyper-spectral infrared sensors such as Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) on Aqua and Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) on MetOp are crucial for creating fundamental climate data records and intercalibrating other infrared sensors. This study employs a double difference method to assess the …

Root Cause Determination Of On-Orbit Degradation Of The Viirs Rotating Telescope Assembly, M. R. Ciofalo, P. D. Fuqua, J. D. Barrie, M. J. Meshishnek, C. T. Chu, J. A. Chaney, R. M. Moision

The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)

The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometric Suite (VIIRS) is a sensor onboard the recently launched Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) spacecraft. Shortly after launch, VIIRS was found to exhibit a pronounced decrease in the optical throughput of several bands, with the near-infrared bands being more affected than those in the visible. The anomaly investigation team performed several experiments that concluded that the primary source of the degradation was a throughput loss in the VIIRS rotating telescope assembly, most likely caused by ultraviolet light illumination. This paper will discuss the laboratory investigation that determined the root cause of the telescope degradation: UV …

Early detection of diseased cells can greatly alter the course of a disease process and create a better outcome for the patient. Lymphangioleiomyomatosis (LAM) is a disease characterized by gradual destruction of lung tissue caused by infiltration and proliferation of smooth muscle-like cells. Currently little can be done to treat the disease other than to ease symptoms. Early LAM diagnosis can greatly impact the course of the disease and the patient’s quality of life. In this work a sensitive imaging platform composed of a ligand targeted poly(amido)amine (PAMAM) nanocarrier complexed with Renilla luciferase (RLuc) is developed to target the lung …
