Nanoscale Surface Patterning And Applications: Using Top-Down Patterning Methods To Aid Bottom-Up Fabrication, Anthony Craig Pearson
Nanoscale Surface Patterning And Applications: Using Top-Down Patterning Methods To Aid Bottom-Up Fabrication, Anthony Craig Pearson
Theses and Dissertations
Bottom-up self-assembly can be used to create structures with sub-20 nm feature sizes or materials with advanced electrical properties. Here I demonstrate processes to enable such self-assembling systems including block copolymers and DNA origami, to be integrated into nanoelectronic devices. Additionally, I present a method which utilizes the high stability and electrical conductivity of graphene, which is a material formed using a bottom-up growth process, to create archival data storage devices. Specifically, I show a technique using block copolymer micelle lithography to fabricate arrays of 5 nm gold nanoparticles, which are chemically modified with a single-stranded DNA molecule and used …

Early Invasion Of Brain Parenchyma By African Trypanosomes, Ute Frevert, Alexandru Movila, Olga V. Nikolskaia, Jayne Raper, Zachary B. Mackey, Maha Abdulla, James Mckerrow, Dennis J. Grab
Publications and Research
Human African trypanosomiasis or sleeping sickness is a vector-borne parasitic disease that has a major impact on human health and welfare in sub-Saharan countries. Based mostly on data from animal models, it is currently thought that trypanosome entry into the brain occurs by initial infection of the choroid plexus and the circumventricular organs followed days to weeks later by entry into the brain parenchyma. However, Trypanosoma brucei bloodstream forms rapidly cross human brain microvascular endothelial cells in vitro and appear to be able to enter the murine brain without inflicting cerebral injury. Using a murine model and intravital brain imaging, …

Hemorrhage Detection And Analysis In Traumatic Pelvic Injuries, Pavani Davuluri
Hemorrhage Detection And Analysis In Traumatic Pelvic Injuries, Pavani Davuluri
Theses and Dissertations
Traumatic pelvic injuries associated with high-energy pelvic fractures are life-threatening injuries. Extensive bleeding is relatively common with pelvic fractures. However, bleeding is especially prevalent with high-energy fractures. Hemorrhage remains the major cause of death that occur within the first 24 hours after a traumatic pelvic injury. Emergent-life saving treatment is required for high-energy pelvic fractures associated with hemorrhage. A thorough understanding of potential sources of bleeding within a short period is essential for diagnosis and treatment planning. Computed Tomography (CT) images have been widely in use in identifying the potential sources of bleeding. A pelvic CT scan contains a large …

The Protection Of Consumers’ Rights And The Application Of Criminal Law In The Unlawful Operation Of Services And Content Service Applications, Edmon Makarim
Indonesia Law Review
Media reports on cases of the theft of pre-paid pulses taking place nowadays have created a misunderstanding in terms of the appropriate application of criminal law. In the context of existing legal provisions concerning consumer protection as setf orth both under the Consumer Protection Law as well as in part under the Telecommunications Law, law enforcement agencies are leaning towards applying general criminal provisions (theft) which, after a careful observation of the Indonesian Criminal Code, in fact do not extend to corporate criminal acts. This paper purports to explain that the currently occurring cases of the theft of pre-paid pulses …

Analysis On The Control Function Of The Dewan Perwakilan Daerah (Regional Representatives Council) The Republic Of Indonesia, Fatmawati Fatmawati
Indonesia Law Review
The Dewan Perwakilan Daerah (Regional Representatives Council - DPD) and the Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat (House of Representatives - DPR) are institutions which represent the people in the parliament of the Republic of Indonesia. However, these two institutions do not have equal powers, including the powers related to the control function. The DPD’s function related to control is provided for under Article 22D paragraph (3), Article 23E paragraph (2), andArticle 23F paragraph (1) ofthe ThirdAmendment to the 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia. The DPD can exercise control of the implementation of certain laws related to regional interests, the implementation …
Property Rights For Natural Resources Management In Indonesia: Have They Been Ruled Unconstitutional?, Sarah Waddell
Property Rights For Natural Resources Management In Indonesia: Have They Been Ruled Unconstitutional?, Sarah Waddell
Indonesia Law Review
A new property right known as the coastal waters commercial use right (Hak Pengusahaan Pengairan Pesisir (HP-3)) introduced by Law No. 27 of 2007 regarding the Management of Coastal and Small Island Areas has been ruled inoperative by the Constitutional Court. The decision raises a question as to whether the door has been closed to marketbased instruments that rely on property rights as a policy tool in natural resources management. This concern is relevant as legal developments in natural resources law internationally have moved away from traditional forms of regulation to focus on the creation of new statutory property rights …
Indonesia’S Regional Anti-Corruption Courts: Should They Be Abolished?, Simon Butt
Indonesia’S Regional Anti-Corruption Courts: Should They Be Abolished?, Simon Butt
Indonesia Law Review
Indonesia’s regional anti-corruption courts have been criticised in recent times for perceived impropriety and for acquitting defendants. Senior jurists and politicians have called for these courts to be abolished or recentralised. This article suggests that neither abolition nor recentralisation is prudent and that these criticisms might not be supported by available case statistics. In any event, this article argues, acquittal rates are very poor indicators of judicial performance. Indeed, acquittals might be legally correct, or even necessary, in some cases. More resources should be allocated to these courts, and to the Corruption Eradication Commission so that it can investigate and …
Sovereign Right Claim On Geo Stationary Orbit (Gso), Adhy Riadhy Arafah
Sovereign Right Claim On Geo Stationary Orbit (Gso), Adhy Riadhy Arafah
Indonesia Law Review
The potency and unique characteristics of GSO for placing communication satellites located only above equatorial states makes the GSO as part of natural resources. The equatorial states realized that the use of GSO has many advantages and has implications to their national interest. However, basic principle in space law, Outer Space Treaty 1967 (Art.II), states that equatorial states forbidden to claim ownership of any part of outer space, particularly claim in sovereignty. The principle “first come first served” in placing of satellite on GSO, practically only gives the advantage to developed countries which have high satellite technology. Hence, the level …

Marine N2 fixing microorganisms, termed diazotrophs, are a key functional group in marine pelagic ecosystems. The biological fixation of dinitrogen (N2) to bioavailable nitrogen provides an important new source of nitrogen for pelagic marine ecosystems and influences primary productivity and organic matter export to the deep ocean. As one of a series of efforts to collect biomass and rates specific to different phytoplankton functional groups, we have constructed a database on diazotrophic organisms in the global pelagic upper ocean by compiling about 12 000 direct field measurements of cyanobacterial diazotroph abundances (based on microscopic cell counts or …
Maximizing The Learning Outcomes Of Cocurricular Civic Engagement In Higher Education, Jeremy Poehnert
Maximizing The Learning Outcomes Of Cocurricular Civic Engagement In Higher Education, Jeremy Poehnert
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
My experience as an undergraduate college student was marked by many challenges. A constant source of support throughout that time was my participation in cocurricular community service activities – without those experiences I would never have completed my degree. After graduating I pursued a career in which I could continue my involvement with such programs, which, for the purposes of this paper, I will refer to as higher education civic engagement (HECE). There has been one issue that I have been particularly drawn to in HECE work — how to maximize what students learn when they participate in cocurricular civic …
