The Development Of The Web And Its Impact On Libraries And Scholarly Communications, Michael B. Binder Dean Emeritus, University Libraries
DLPS Faculty Publications
In 2011 when I was given the opportunity of taking a research leave to explore a topic of my choice, I immediately thought of the changes in which we find information today both in our work and home lives. This was a natural reaction for me because ever since I had initiated my studies of librarianship and information science, I had been most interested in technology and its impact on libraries. This started with Professor Susan Artandi at Rutgers when I first learned of systems analysis and library automation and reached greater fruition under Professor Leon Montgomery's instruction on programming …

Response Surface Methodology Guided Release Of Two Acetate Volatiles From An Oil-In-Water Emulsion, Mark Traynor, Roisin Burke, N. Brunton, Catherine Barry-Ryan
Articles
Optimization of the volatile release of two commonly used flavor compounds (isoamyl acetate and furfuryl acetate) from a food emulsion model system was evaluated using response surface methodology (RSM). Twenty-seven random order settings were established using a central composite face-centered (CCF) experimental design. The main and combined effects of four independent variables—concentration of isoamyl acetate (50–90 ppm), furfuryl acetate (20–30 ppm), salt (NaCl; 0.1–2%), and pH (5–7)—on the responses were examined. The main objective of the present study was to determine the optimal concentration level of the four variables leading to optimal release of the volatile compounds. Quantitative measurements were …

Numbers And Tempo: 1630-1800, Beverly Jerold
Numbers And Tempo: 1630-1800, Beverly Jerold
Performance Practice Review
After discussing the role of technology in achieving modern performance standards, this article examines sources that have been cited in support of extremely rapid tempos for the time frame 1630-1800. It summarizes recent findings about the French time devices in which a new source ‒ the Paris dancing master Raoul Auger Feuillet’s reasonable pendulum tempo numbers for dance forms ‒ provides the most accurate information to date for tempo around 1700. Continuing then with other sources cited for rapid tempos, the present article discusses the conflicting statements in Marin Mersenne’s Harmonie universelle and his inaccurate pendulum measurements. It considers the …

Human Endometrial Stromal Stem Cells Differentiate Into Megakaryocytes With The Ability To Produce Functional Platelets, Jinju Wang, Shuzhen Chen, Cheng Zhang, Samantha Stegeman, Teresa Pfaff-Amesse, Ying Zhang, Wenfeng Zhang, Lawrence Amesse, Yanfang Chen
Pharmacology and Toxicology Faculty Publications
Human endometrium is a high dynamic tissue that contains endometrial stromal stem cells (hESSCs). The hESSCs have been differentiated into a number of cell lineages. However, differentiation of hESSCs into megakaryocytes (MKs) has not yet been investigated. The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of MK generation from hESSCs and subsequent production of functional platelets (PLTs). In our study, hESSCs were cultured from endometrial stromal cells as confirmed by positive stromal cell specific markers (CD90 and CD29) and negative hematopoietic stem cell markers (CD45 and CD34) expression. Then, hESSCs were differentiated in a medium supplemented with thrombopoietin …

Adrenal Steroids Uniquely Influence Sexual Motivation Behavior In Male Rats, George Taylor, Joshua Dearborn, Susan Maloney
Psychology Faculty Works
The androgenic adrenal steroids dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and 4α-androstenedione (4-A) have significant biological activity, but it is unclear if the behavioral effects are unique or only reflections of the effects of testosterone (TS). Gonadally intact male Long-Evans rats were assigned to groups to receive supplements of DHEA, 4-A, TS, corticosteroid (CORT), all at 400 µg steroid/kg of body weight, or vehicle only for 5 weeks. All males were tested in a paradigm for sexual motivation that measures time and urinary marks near an inaccessible receptive female. It was found that DHEA and 4-A supplements failed to influence time near the estrous …

History As Community-Based Research And The Pedagogy Of Discovery: Teaching Racial Inequality, Documenting Local History, And Building Links Between Students And Communities In Mississippi And Tennessee, Spencer D. Wood, Ricardo Samuel
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
In this article we describe the process of implementing a community-based research project that linked student learning with documenting elements of local histories surrounding the civil rights movement in Mississippi and Tennessee. We show that developing a dialogue among community members, ourselves, and our students worked to democratize the research project, produce strong support among the community members, and contribute to an improved understanding of racial inequality for our students. We rely on our accounts of the process, student journals, and oral histories compiled during the research. Our findings show that there are considerable opportunities for community-based research around documenting …

Imagination Enviro-Station: Students Connecting Students To Ecological Sustainability, David Burley, Natalie Shelton, Chris Daunis, Jessica Cuifi, Jamie Walker, Maria Coleman, Bertha-Fabianna Matheu
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
The development of an environmental identity is viewed by many as essential if we are to reorganize our societies toward ecological sustainability (Bell 2009; Clayton and Opotow 2003; Thomashow 2002). That, along with an eye toward environmental justice, was the major impetus for our graduate seminar in applied environmental sociology to partner with an elementary school in our small city of Hammond, LA, during the spring semester of 2010. After conducting focus groups with a group of fourth to sixth grade students and holding decision-making discussions with them for this community-based research (CBR) project, we went about two projects – …
Examining Community-Based Research As An Application For Public Health Training, Jolynn P. Montgomery, Dana L. Thomas
Examining Community-Based Research As An Application For Public Health Training, Jolynn P. Montgomery, Dana L. Thomas
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
The University of Michigan School of Public Health provided community-based research (CBR) opportunities to masters-level students through week-long field experiences in two communities in Mississippi through interdisciplinary collaboration with Delta State University. This article examines the learning outcomes of those field experiences in the context of CBR and the value that those experiences added to their public health proficiency. Quantitative and qualitative data from post-deployment evaluations were examined to determine strengths and weaknesses of this approach to the public health learning process. Overall, students found this approach to provide a rich context for research, help put a face to the …

Gardner-Webb Students Getting Access To Democratic National Convention, Office Of University Communications
Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive
Thanks to the efforts of the Gardner-Webb University Department of Social Sciences, a group of students will have the opportunity to attend numerous events at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) on Sept. 4-6 in Charlotte, N.C., including President Barack Obama’s acceptance speech. The first three days of the convention will be held at Time Warner Arena, and the last night takes place at Bank of America Stadium. “This is an amazing opportunity for Gardner-Webb students to see the political system up close,” said Dr. Ben Gaskins, assistant professor of Political Science at GWU.

Once A Failed Remic, Never A Remic, Bradley T. Borden, David J. Reiss
Cornell Law Faculty Working Papers
Investors in mortgage-backed securities, built on the shoulders of the tax-advantaged Real Estate Mortgage Investment Conduit (“REMIC”), may be facing extraordinary tax losses because of how bankers and lawyers structured (or failed to structure) these securities. This calamity is compounded by the fact that those professional advisors should have known that the REMICs they created were flawed from the start.
